Sexual function and sexual quality of life in men with genital warts: a cross-sectional study

Effects of obsessive beliefs and anxiety on sexual function in HPV-positive men

Our study aimed to investigate the effects of anxiety and obsessive beliefs on sexual function in men with human papillomavirus (HPV) and healthy men. Ninety HPV-positive men (mean age=32.26 ± 6.63 years) from the Urology Outpatient Clinic and 75 healthy men (mean age=33.51 ± 5.67 years) who worked in the hospital were assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function-15 (IIEF-15), Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire-44 (OBQ), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) in 2023. The mean IIEF-15 scores of the patients with HPV and healthy individuals were 24.59 ± 6.14 vs. 23.16 ± 6.23 for the IIEF-erectile function; 8.30 ± 2.34 vs. 7.79 ± 1.77 for the IIEF-orgasmic function; 7.40 ± 1.73 vs. 7.23 ± 1.53 for the IIEF-sexual desire; 11.30 ± 3.38 vs. 11 ± 3.10 for the IIEF-intercourse satisfaction; and 7.62 ± 2.18 vs. 7.53 ± 2.02 for the IIEF-overall satisfaction (p > 0.05 for all). However, the mean OBQ and STAI scores of patients with HPV and healthy individuals were 46.66 ± 16.06 vs. 36.44 ± 19.25 for the OBQ-inflated responsibility/overestimation of threat (OBQ-RT); 45.91 ± 17.31 vs. 36.53 ± 19.08 for the OBQ-perfectionism/intolerance of uncertainty (OBQ-PU); 28.04 ± 12.31 vs. 23.80 ± 11.74 for the OBQ-importance of thought/control thoughts (OBQ-IC); 37.58 ± 12.06 vs. 33.59 ± 11.09 for the STAI-state anxiety (p < 0.05 for all); and 32.83 ± 8.34 vs. 33.44 ± 11.05 for the STAI-trait anxiety (p = 0.689). Our results showed that the STAI-state anxiety (β = -0.37; β = -0.32; and β = -0.43, respectively) and OBQ-IC (β = -0.57; β = -0.43; and β = -0.48, respectively) scores were the main predictors of the IIEF-erectile function, IIEF-orgasmic function, and IIEF-overall satisfaction scores in the HPV-positive group. The OBQ-RT (β = 0.46), OBQ-PU (β = -0.51) and STAI-state anxiety (β = -0.56) scores were unique predictors of the IIEF-sexual desire score, and the OBQ-RT (β = 0.41), OBQ-PU (β = -0.42), and OBQ-IC (β = -0.43) scores were the main predictors of the IIEF-intercourse satisfaction score in the HPV-positive group. However, regression models for the IIEF-15 subscales for the control group were not significant (p ˃ 0.05). Understanding the role of obsessive beliefs and anxiety in sexual dysfunction among HPV-positive men might be important for developing psychotherapeutic interventions.

Sexual Function and Quality of Life in Iranian Women With Human Papillomavirus Infection

Objective

Considering the prevalence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the lack of HPV vaccination program in Iran among young women and the importance of quality of life and sexual performance in women, we decided to conduct a study to examine the relationship between HPV infection and sexual dysfunction and quality of life in Iranian women.

Materials and methods

In this cohort study, 250 married women who infected with HPV were recruited via convinence sampling from colposcopy clinic of Arash women hospital (Tehran, Iran) from April 2020 to May 2022.They were evaluated concerning their sexual function in the domains of desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain with the female sexual function index (FSFI) questionnaire (the total FSFI score is calculated by the sum of the nineteen items). Sexual quality of life-female (SQOL-F) items (Likert-type scale with a cut-off of 65 points) were organized into four sub-scales: psychosexual feelings, sexual and relationship satisfaction, self-worthlessness, and sexual repression. All patients filled out the female sexual function index (FSFI) and sexual quality of life (SQOL) questionnaires. Variables were analysed via correlation coefficient and linear regression tests.

Results

Mean age and mean marriage duration were 38.5±4.5 and 12.2±7.2, respectively. There was a weak correlation between FSFI and SQOL (r=0.15, p=0.001).Time of marriage and genital warts were the predictors on the FSFI and SQOL.

Conclusion

The findings suggest that HPV infection can impair sexual function and quality of life. This research contributes valuable insights, especially considering the prevalence of HPV.

Seroprevalence of sexually transmitted infections over 44 years - A cross-sectional study in Sweden

BACKGROUND

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may cause substantial individual suffering and a large economic burden for society. This study examined the seroprevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, and several human papillomaviruses (HPV) in the Swedish population over time.

METHODS

The study population consisted of 30-year-old women attending maternity care, and 50 year-old men and women attending health check-ups, from 1975 to 2018. Antibody status was determined by multiplex serology and quantified using median reporter fluorescence intensity (MFI).

RESULTS

A total of 891 samples were analysed (519 from 30-year-old women, 186 from 50 year-old women and 186 from 50 year-old men). Of these, 41.5% showed seropositivity for Chlamydia trachomatis, 16.7% for Mycoplasma genitalium, 70.5% for HSV-1, 14.9% for HSV-2, 13.2% for high-risk HPV, and 8.3% for low-risk HPV. Seropositivity for Mycoplasma genitalium, HSV-1 and especially Chlamydia trachomatis decreased over time.

CONCLUSIONS

There was a decrease over time in Chlamydia trachomatis seroprevalence, probably due to contact tracing, testing and early treatment; this might also have affected Mycoplasma genitalium seroprevalence. Despite the reduction, seroprevalences are still high, so continued and new efforts to reduce STI incidence are essential.

The effect of exposure to emotional violence on sexual function, sexual quality of life and psychological well-being in women: Structural equation modeling

Emotional violence is all of the destructive behaviors that humiliate the individual and cause him/her to feel under pressure to disrupt mental health. These destructive behaviors can affect women's sexuality. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of exposure to emotional violence on sexual function, sexual life quality, and psychological well-being in women. The study was conducted in a descriptive and relational screening model. The sample of the study consisted of 213 women. Personal information forms, the female sexual function index, the sexual quality of life questionnaire, the exposure to emotional violence scale, and the psychological well-being scale were used in the study. Structural equation modeling was used to determine the direct and indirect predictive power of the independent variable on the dependent variable. The effect of exposure to emotional violence on psychological well-being (β = -0.323; p < 0.001), and the effect of quality of sexual life on psychological well-being were statistically significant (β =0.315; p < 0.001). Moreover, the effect of exposure to emotional violence on sexual life quality was determined to be statistically significant (β = -0.665; p < 0.001). The effect of quality of sexual life on female sexual function was statistically significant (β = -0.288; p = 0.002). Furthermore, while the effect of psychological well-being on the female sexual function index was not statistically significant (β = -0.101; p = 0.266), the effect of exposure to emotional violence scale on the female sexual function index was statistically significant (β = -0.087; p = 0.373). The mediating role of exposure to emotional violence in the relationship between sexual life quality and psychological well-being was high. Furthermore, the sexual life quality of 43.6 % of women was explained by exposure to emotional violence. On the other hand, 28.7 % of psychological well-being score was explained by the sexual life quality and exposure to emotional violence.

Background Condyloma acuminatum (CA), also known as a genital wart (GW), is a sexually transmitted disease caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV lesions, recurrence tendency, and risk of malignant formation are primarily dependent on the person’s immunity level. GW recurrence is a major challenge in CA treatment.The aim of this study was to explore how lesional autotransplantation (LT) can be used to treat coronary anemia and decrease its recurrence. Methods We treated CA through the preparation and implantation of tissue from nine CA patients in our dermatology clinic. Transplantation of small pieces of HPV lesions to the subcutaneous fat of the inguinal region was carried out with the help of a simple surgical method under local anesthesia. Patients were followed up for six to eight months. We searched PubMed and the Web of Science for treatment options for CA to compare our treatment method recurrence rate with existing treatment options. Results During three months of follow-up, seven patients experienced no recurrence of condyloma lesions, while two patients experienced recurrence of small lesions of condyloma acuminatum. The recurrence rate of CA once treated by autotransplantation was relatively low compared to that of other CA treatment options. Conclusions Transplantation of HPV lesions to the inguinal area reduces the recurrence rate in sexually active individuals. The 2/9 recurrence after implantation could be due to poor hygiene, sexual relationships or immune factors.
