Preconception fear of childbirth: experiences and needs of women fearing childbirth before first pregnancy

Fertility attitudes and intentions among postgraduate female and male students in China: A qualitative focus group study

OBJECTIVE

To explore the fertility attitudes and intentions of postgraduate female and male students in China.

METHODS

A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using focus group interviews and purposive sampling to select 27 postgraduate students. This diverse group included eight nursing, five pharmacy, four rehabilitation, four ophthalmology, and six stomatology students from a graduate school in China. Data were collected through three focus groups from June 2023 to August 2023. Themes and sub-themes were identified through thematic analysis.

FINDINGS

The study identified three themes impacting the students' fertility intentions: (1) changes in fertility attitudes, (2) personal and external factors affecting their fertility intentions, and (3) the need for fertility support.

CONCLUSION

This study provides insights into the fertility attitudes and intentions of a specific cohort, namely postgraduate students in China. The results indicate that postgraduate students are open to new ideas and place greater importance on personal realization and emotional satisfaction in the context of their fertility intentions than on the three-child policy. We discovered that women's attitudes and intentions on fertility were frequently impacted by media and other information, whereas men were rarely influenced by such factors. However, family and social support, especially partner support, were crucial in fostering positive fertility intentions among postgraduate students.

Psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of the fear of pregnancy scale: a translation and validation study

Introduction

Many women experience fear toward pregnancy, which can impact their desire to have children and the national birth rate. Thus, assessing women's fear of pregnancy is of great importance. However, there is currently no specialized tool for assessing women's fear of pregnancy in China. The purpose of this study is to translate the Fear of Pregnancy Scale into Chinese and test its reliability and validity among women of childbearing age.

Methods

Using convenience sampling combined with a snowballing method, a cross-sectional survey was conducted on 886 women of childbearing age in two cities in China. The translation was strictly carried out according to the Brislin model. Item analysis, validity analysis, and reliability analysis were employed for psychometric assessment.

Results

The Chinese version of the Fear of Pregnancy Scale comprises 28 items. Exploratory factor analysis extracted four factors with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 72.578%. Confirmatory factor analysis showed: NFI = 0.956, CFI = 0.986, GFI = 0.927, IFI = 0.986, TLI = 0.985, RMSEA = 0.032, and χ2/df = 1.444. The scale's Cronbach's α coefficient is 0.957, split-half reliability is 0.840, and test-retest reliability is 0.932.

Conclusion

The Chinese version of the Fear of Pregnancy Scale possesses robust psychometric properties and can assess the degree of pregnancy fear among Chinese women of childbearing age. It provides a reference for formulating relevant policies in the prenatal care service system and implementing targeted intervention measures.

'It wasn't what I was suited for': regretful mothers negotiating their reproductive decision and mother role

This study contributes to our understanding of why women without a longing to have children and who, in theory, have the possibility of refraining from parenthood still become mothers. The article is based on in-depth interviews with six Swedish mothers who never longed to have children in the first place. It illustrates how they make sense of their reproductive decision-making process and their current role as a mother. The analysis shows how reproductive decision-making is highly influenced by cultural perceptions of proper womanhood and the idea that every woman has an innate longing to have children, as well as other people's wishes and pressure. Although the mothers did their best to align with motherhood expectations, their narratives show that they are still oriented towards non-motherhood on an emotional level. This manifests through their experiences of existential regret about having children. Hence, the mothers' understandings of their path to motherhood reveal a complex conflict between outer expectations and inner wishes, which destabilises the idea of reproduction as a promise of happiness.

Experiences of success and failure in childbirth

AIMS

To determine what kinds of birth-related experiences of success and failure are described by the participants, and whether there are differences according to fear of childbirth and parity. Studying these experiences is important for understanding the psychological mechanisms behind different childbirth experiences and their impact on maternal mental well-being.

METHODS

This was a longitudinal mixed methods study. Descriptions of the birth experiences of 113 Finnish participants were gathered in a survey at 4-8 weeks postpartum and analysed with content analysis. Fear of childbirth was determined antenatally with the Wijma Delivery Expectations scale (W-DEQ A).The number of success and failure expressions were compared between people with FOC and others and between primiparous and multiparous people.

RESULTS

The contents of the childbirth-related experiences of success and failure were categorised into 12 subcategories, organised under three higher-order categories that were named personal factors, course of childbirth, and support. The most typical expressions of success were in the categories of mode of birth, staff, and mental factors, and the most typical expressions of failure in the categories of staff and mental factors. Experiences of failure were more often expressed by primiparous than multiparous people, but there were no statistically significant differences by FOC. Expressions of success were equally common regardless of parity or FOC.

CONCLUSION

Postpartum people categorise aspects of their birth experiences in terms of success and failure. Primiparous people are more susceptible to experiencing failure at childbirth, but possible differences between people with FOC and other people warrant further investigation.
