Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited understanding exists regarding the association between daily total dietary nutrient intakes and immune-inflammation states in US adults exposed to various pathogens. This study sought to examine the correlation between nutrient intakes and immune-inflammation indicators and to assess their performance in distinguishing immune-inflammation states. METHODS This study was derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included 33,804 participants aged 20 years or older between 2005 and 2018. Multivariable linear regression and restricted cubic spline regression were conducted to evaluate the association between nutrient intakes and immune-inflammation indicators. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to evaluate the discriminatory performance of identified nutrients for various immune-inflammation states measured by the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII). RESULTS Ten key nutrients were significantly associated with immune-inflammation responses, including calcium, saturated fatty acid (SFA) 4:0, SFA 6:0, SFA 12:0, SFA 14:0, SFA 16:0, vitamin B2, total SFAs, retinol, and lutein + zeaxanthin, which show potential as dietary indicators. The area under the curve for discriminating various immune-inflammation states was improved by at least 0.03 compared with a model that included only covariates, with all P values <0.05 in the Delong tests, indicating a significant enhancement in model performance. CONCLUSIONS Ten nutrients, including calcium, various SFAs, vitamin B2, retinol, and lutein + zeaxanthin, exhibit significant association with SII and potential as dietary indicators for distinguishing between different immune-inflammation states in US adults with seropositivity to various viruses.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION Diet directly affects glucose metabolism, and eating behavior is influenced by various daily life stressors. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between common psychosomatic stressors on endocrine hormones and eating behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed in 40 patients with type 2 diabetes. Resting hormone blood sampling and four self-reported questionnaires were employed. RESULTS Patients who scored higher on the 'anger/hostility' (AH) subcategory of the profile of mood state (POMS) questionnaire had significantly higher serum cortisol (β = 0.40, P = 0.01 by least squares adjusted for age and sex). In the eating behavior questionnaire, the subcategories of 'feeling of hunger/satiation' (β = 0.49, P < 0.01) and 'eating as diversion' (β = 0.39, P = 0.03) were associated with higher serum cortisol. Resting morning cortisol levels were higher in participants who rated high on the POMS-AH and in those who reported 'irritated when hungry' and 'tend to eat when irritated or anxious'. Sleep quality showed no association with eating behavior. CONCLUSIONS Mood state is associated with eating behavior. Anger increases cortisol levels and may lead to compulsive eating. Various forms of hostility are important factors in appetite control and increased cortisol secretion, and can be an impediment to successful dietary self-management in patients with type 2 diabetes. Thus, assessment of mood state and control of negative mood are important therapeutic targets in diabetes management.

Abstract
Aims/introduction In patients with diabetes, obesity is an aggravating factor for glycemic control and its vascular complications. However, the psychological and behavioral characteristics of those patients with obesity have not been fully clarified. This study investigated eating and coping behavior, personality traits, quality of life (QOL), and depression status in patients with diabetes with or without obesity. Materials and methods Questionnaires obtained from 567 patients with diabetes at Dokkyo Medical University were analyzed. Eating behavior, coping behavior, personality traits, QOL, and depression status were evaluated by the Eating Behavior Questionnaire, Brief COPE, Japanese Ten-Item Personality Inventory, EuroQol 5 Dimensions-5 Level, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9, respectively. Participants were divided according to body mass index (BMI) into a non-obese group (BMI < 25), obese group (BMI 25-35), and high-degree obese group (BMI ≥ 35), and results were compared between groups. Results On all items of the Eating Behavior Questionnaire, scores were higher in the obese and high-degree obese groups than non-obese group, indicating worse eating behavior. In coping behavior, significant intergroup differences were found in self-distraction, substance use, using emotional support, using instrumental support, and venting. As for personality traits, the obese group had significantly lower conscientiousness and higher emotional instability than the non-obese group. There was no significant difference in QOL or depression status. Conclusions These results suggest that there are some characteristics in eating and coping behaviors and some personality traits between obese and non-obese patients with diabetes. Treatment based on such characteristics may be useful for patients with diabetes and obesity. Abstract
Diet and eating behavior both play a crucial role in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary intake and eating behavior in a population of patients with T2DM. A cross-sectional study was performed using 416 patients with T2DM and their dietary intake and eating behavior were assessed with validated questionnaires. Women scored significantly higher than men for emotional and restrained eating (p < 0.001). Correlation analyses showed that emotional eaters consumed significantly more calories (r = 0.120, p = 0.014) and fat (r = 0.101, p = 0.039), as well as non-alcoholic beverages for women (r = 0.193, p = 0.003) and alcohol for men (r = 0.154, p = 0.038). Also, individuals who ate based on external cues consumed significantly more calories (r = 0.188, p < 0.001) and fat (r = 0.139, p = 0.005). These results demonstrate that eating behavior influences dietary intake. Understanding this relationship could optimize diabetes management and allow for more individualized nutritional guidance.

Abstract
This study aimed to reveal the relationship between eating behavior and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in young adults and suggest a questionnaire for eating behavior assessment. We included 322 male graduate students at Gifu University. Diagnoses of NAFLD and MASLD were based on the presence of hepatic steatosis on ultrasonography. Eating behavior was assessed using the eating behavior questionnaire (EBQ) recommended by the Japan Society for the Study of Obesity. We assessed the eating behaviors associated with NAFLD and MASLD using logistic regression, decision tree, and random forest analyses. The median age of the participants was 22 years, and 16% and 11% had NAFLD and MASLD, respectively. The EBQ total score was significantly higher in participants with MASLD than in those without MASLD (102 vs. 90 points, P = 0.006) and in those with NAFLD than in those without NAFLD (97 vs. 90 points, P = 0.007). Among eating behavior categories, the decision tree and random forest analyses revealed that "perception of constitution and weight" was the strongest contributor for NAFLD/MASLD. Our study revealed that eating behavior assessed with the EBQ is robustly associated with NAFLD and MASLD in young male adults.

Abstract
Affordable and accessible behaviour-based interventions that do not overwhelm or demoralise overweight/obese individuals are needed. Combining clothing with behaviour change techniques might be an option. This is because clothing is a social norm, and clothing and motivation for weight loss are associated with the common desire to look better. Therefore, we conducted a single-blind randomised controlled trial to examine the effect of an intervention that combined behaviour change techniques, including simplified goal setting and self-monitoring, with a body compression corrective garment (BCCG), which exerts continuous but minimal tactile pressure on the hips and abdomen. We enrolled healthy community-dwelling adults with a body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2 and assigned 35 and 34 participants to the intervention and control groups, respectively. The reduction in body weight was 1.3 kg more in the intervention group than in the control group after the 12-week intervention period (p < 0.05, repeated-measures mixed model). In addition, eating behaviour and body appreciation showed significant improvement in the intervention group compared with the control group. Our newly developed intervention improved eating behaviour and body appreciation and reduced the body weight of overweight/obese participants. Wearing a BCCG seems to facilitate behavioural changes and lead to weight loss.

Dietary Intakes and Eating Behavior between Metabolically Healthy and Unhealthy Obesity Phenotypes in Asian Children and Adolescents. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14224796. Abstract
Diet plays a critical role in the development of obesity and obesity-related morbidities. Our study aimed to evaluate the dietary food groups, nutrient intakes and eating behaviors of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity phenotypes in an Asian cohort of children and adolescents. Participants (n = 52) were asked to record their diet using a 3-day food diary and intakes were analyzed using a nutrient software. Eating behavior was assessed using a validated questionnaire. Metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) or metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) were defined based on criteria of metabolic syndrome. Children/adolescents with MUO consumed fewer whole grains (median: 0.00 (interquartile range: 0.00-0.00 g) vs. 18.5 g (0.00-69.8 g)) and less polyunsaturated fat (6.26% kcal (5.17-7.45% kcal) vs. 6.92% kcal (5.85-9.02% kcal)), and had lower cognitive dietary restraint (15.0 (13.0-17.0) vs. 16.0 (14.0-19.0)) compared to children/adolescents with MHO. Deep fried food, fast food and processed convenience food were positively associated with both systolic (β: 2.84, 95%CI: 0.95-6.62) and diastolic blood pressure (β: 4.83, 95%CI: 0.61-9.04). Higher polyunsaturated fat intake (OR: 0.529, 95%CI: 0.284-0.986) and cognitive dietary restraint (OR: 0.681, 95%CI: 0.472-0.984) were associated with a lower risk of the MUO phenotype. A healthier diet composition and positive eating behavior may contribute to favorable metabolic outcomes in children and adolescents with obesity.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) includes visceral obesity, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. The prevalence of MetS is 20-25%, which is an important risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). MetS causes effects on renal pathophysiology, including glomerular hyperfiltration, RAAS, microalbuminuria, profibrotic factors and podocyte injury. This review compares several criteria of MetS and analyzes their differences. MetS and the pathogenesis of CKD includes insulin resistance, obesity, dyslipidemia, inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction. The intervention of MetS-related renal damage is the focus of this article and includes controlling body weight, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia, requiring all components to meet the criteria. In addition, interventions such as endoplasmic reticulum stress, oxidative stress, gut microbiota, body metabolism, appetite inhibition, podocyte apoptosis, and mesenchymal stem cells are reviewed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Though nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is related to chronic kidney disease (CKD), it is unclear whether the hepatic steatosis index (HSI), a screening tool for NAFLD, is related to CKD. The present study investigated the relationship between HSI and CKD among middle-aged individuals in Japan. METHODS Subjects were adults (aged 40-64 years) who received an annual health checkup in Japan between April 2013 and March 2014. Height and weight were measured, and venous blood samples were obtained to determine alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and creatinine levels. HSI was calculated by the following formula: HSI = 8 × ALT/AST ratio + body mass index (+2, if diabetes; +2, if female). CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and/or urinary protein of ≥ (+). Logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) for CKD. RESULTS Data of 94,893 adults were analyzed. Compared with men with an HSI < 30, men with 30 ≤ HSI ≤ 36 (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.40-1.61) and HSI > 36 (OR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.99-2.31) had significantly higher ORs for CKD. Moreover, there was a significant dose-response relationship between HSI and CKD (P for trend < 0.001). Even after adjusting for confounders, the significant results persisted. These findings in men were similar to those in women. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that the HSI was associated with CKD among middle-aged adults in Japan. Additionally, a dose-response relationship of HSI to CKD was observed. The present study suggested that it might be useful to monitor the HSI among middle-aged individuals to detect CKD at an early stage.
