Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies show that the COVID-19 pandemic affected the number of surgeries performed. However, data on the association between the COVID-19 pandemic and otolaryngologic surgeries according to subspecialties are lacking. This study was performed to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on various types of otolaryngologic surgeries. METHODS We retrospectively identified patients who underwent otolaryngologic surgeries from April 2018 to February 2021 using a Japanese national inpatient database. We performed interrupted time-series analyses before and after April 2020 to evaluate the number of otolaryngologic surgeries performed. The Japanese government declared its first state of emergency during the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020. RESULTS We obtained data on 348,351 otolaryngologic surgeries. Interrupted time-series analysis showed a significant decrease in the number of overall otolaryngologic surgeries in April 2020 (-3619 surgeries per month; 95% confidence interval, -5555 to -1683; p < 0.001). Removal of foreign bodies and head and neck cancer surgery were not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the post-COVID-19 period, the number of otolaryngologic surgeries, except for ear and upper airway surgeries, increased significantly. The number of tracheostomies and peritonsillar abscess incisions did not significantly decrease during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSION The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a decrease in the overall number of otolaryngologic surgeries, but the trend differed among subspecialties.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered all aspects of the healthcare system's organization and impacted patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) who have experienced delayed diagnosis and treatment. The pandemic resulted in the admission of patients with severe dyspnea and a need for tracheotomy due to extremely advanced HNC. This study's objective was to evaluate the clinical characteristics of two multi-center cohorts, "pre-COVID-19" and "COVID-19", of HNC patients admitted as emergencies for dyspnea. The therapeutic activity of HNC patients in four University Departments of Otolaryngology was studied over two time periods: September-February 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. A group of 136 HNC patients who underwent a tracheotomy in two-time cohorts, pre-COVID-19 (N = 59) and COVID-19 (N = 77), was analyzed. The mean tracheotomies incidence proportion was 1.82 (SD: 1.12) for the pre-COVID-19 and 3.79 (SD: 2.76) for COVID-19 period. A rise in the occurrence of emergency dyspnea was observed in the COVID-19 cohort, and the greatest increase was seen in the centers with the highest limitations on planned surgeries. In the pre-COVID-19 period, 66% of patients presented with symptoms for more than a month in comparison to 78% of patients in the COVID-19 period (p = 0.04). There was a higher incidence of laryngeal and laryngopharyngeal cancer in the COVID-19 period (63% vs. 75%, respectively). The number of tracheotomies performed under general anesthesia dropped in favor of local anesthesia during COVID-19 (64% vs. 56%, respectively) due to extremely advanced HNC. In the COVID-19 cohort, most patients received a telemedicine consultation (N = 55, 71%) in comparison to the pre-COVID-19 period (N = 14, 24%). Reorganization of the referral system, adjustment of treatment capacity for an increased number of HNC, and a reserve for more extensive resection and reconstruction surgeries should be made in the profile of otorhinolaryngological departments, ensuring future HNC treatment is not hampered in case of a new pandemic wave.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has deeply impacted health, and
affects many different medical specialties. Head and neck surgeons, in
particular, have been recognised as one of the professionals at the highest risk
of infection through aerosol-generating procedures as part of their usual job.
The aim of this document is to review the current literature on the topic, to
provide useful recommendations to avoid both healthcare staff exposure to
contagion and the delay in the diagnosis and treatment of Head and Neck
diseases, in this new phase of COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its disease, COVID-19 is a global pandemic creating an unprecedented medical as well economic havoc across the world. Despite the wide spread global infection rates, the death rate is low for COVID-19. However, COVID-19 patients with other comorbid conditions face severe health complications irrespective of their gender or age. As the management of COVID-19 patients is taking up health resources, it is getting difficult to treat patients suffering from other dreadful diseases like cancer, HIV, and mental health issues. In this chapter, we discuss the effects of COVID-19 and management of cancer patients of main cancer subtypes (e.g., breast, lung, blood cancers), and patients affected with HIV and mental health issues. Finally, we also add a perspective on Ayurvedic treatment and its efficacy on COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
Purpose The use of single use plastic items and plastic wrapping has increased over the last number of decades. Outside of the medical field there has been a conscious drive to reduce single use plastic and reuse items to reduce the amount of waste we produce. We undertook this investigation to quantify our plastic waste production and generate ideas to reduce this volume. Methodology Data was collected from a University Hospital ENT outpatient department via real-time recording methods using standard data collection forms. We measured plastic unit usage pre and post COVID restrictions and compared this to our number of patient encounters. Projections of plastic usage were determined via a hypothetical resumption of patient services model. Results In total there were 440 patients included. In period one the mean units of plastic used per day was 65.1 (median 67; range 27–84). In the second period, the mean number of plastic units was 23.4 (median 22; range 1–7). Blue nitrile gloves and masks were the most commonly used single use items. The hypothetical projection model predicted a 147.6% increase in single use items following the introduction of COVID precautions. Conclusion We have a duty of care not only to our patients but future generations of patients and the environment which we share. Single use items and excessive plastic wrapping have benefits in terms of convenience and sterility, but these conveniences can be easily extended to reusable types to limit our volume of waste, reduce our waste management costs and protect our environment.
