Fabrication of MoS2/rGO hybrids as electrocatalyst for water splitting applications

Environmental degradation and energy constraint are important risks to long-term sustainability in the modern world. Water splitting is a vital approach for environmentally friendly and sustainable energy storage, providing a clean way to produce hydrogen without pollutants. Preparing a catalyst that is active, bifunctional, and durable for water splitting is a difficult task. We addressed the difficulty by creating a bifunctional heterogeneous catalyst, MoS2/rGO, with an ideal weight percentage of 5 wt% by a hydrothermal process. The optimized sample showed exceptional electrocatalytic activity, requiring an overpotential of 242 mV and 120 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). Furthermore, our synthesized catalyst was validated for its exceptional water-splitting capacity, with the optimized sample showing low Tafel slope values of 59 mV dec-1 for HER and 171 mV dec-1 for OER. The significant OER and HER activity seen in the 5 wt% MoS2/rGO hybrid, compared to other hybrids, is due to the many catalytic active sites that aid in charge and electron transport, as well as the synergistic interaction between MoS2 and rGO.

Exfoliated graphite with spinel oxide as an effective hybrid electrocatalyst for water splitting

The aim of the conducted research was to develop hybrid nanostructures formed from MnCo₂O₄ and exfoliated graphite. Carbon added during the synthesis allowed for obtaining a well-distributed MnCo₂O₄ particle size with exposed active sites contributing to the increased electric conductivity. The influence of the weight ratios of carbon to a catalyst for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions was investigated. The new bifunctional catalysts for water splitting were tested in an alkaline medium with excellent electrochemical performance and very good working stability. The results for hybrid samples show better electrochemical performance compared to the pure MnCo₂O₄. The highest electrocatalytic activity was for sample MnCo₂O₄/EG (2/1), where the value of the overpotential was 1.66 V at 10 mA cm^-2, and also for this sample a low value of Tafel slope (63 mV dec^-1) was denoted.

Comparison of physical, mechanical and biological effects of leucocyte-PRF and advanced-PRF on polyacrylamide nanofiber wound dressings: In vitro and in vivo evaluations

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is extracted from the blood without biochemical interference and, also, with the ability of a long-term release of growth factors that can stimulate tissue repair and regerenation. Here, leucocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) and advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) were extracted and utilized for the creation of nanofibers containing polyacrylamide (PAAm), PAAm / L-PRF and PAAm / A-PRP through electrospinning processing technique. The effect of the type of PRF on the physical, mechanical and biological properties of the resultant nanofiberous wound dressings are thoroughly evaluated. The results presented in the current study reveals that the fiber diameter is grealtly reduced through the utilization of L-PRF. In addition, mechanical property is also positively affected by L-PRF and the degradation rate is found to be higher compared to A-PRF group. The L929 cells proliferation and adhesion, angiogenesis potential and wound healing ability was significantly higher in PAAm/A-PRF nanofibers compared to pure PAAm and PAAm/L-PRF nanofibers owed to the release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platelet derived growth factor (PDGF). Overall, the utilization of L-PRF or A-PRF can improve the physical, mechanical and biological behavior of nanofiber making them an ideal candidate for wound dressings, with the emphasis on the skin tissue repair and regeneration applications.

Iron oxide nanoflowers encapsulated in thermosensitive fluorescent liposomes for hyperthermia treatment of lung adenocarcinoma

Magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) is in the spotlight of nanomedical research for the treatment of cancer employing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and their intrinsic capability for heat dissipation under an alternating magnetic field (AMF). Herein we focus on the synthesis of iron oxide nanoflowers (Nfs) of different sizes (15 and 35 nm) and coatings (bare, citrate, and Rhodamine B) while comparing their physicochemical and magnetothermal properties. We encapsulated colloidally stable citrate coated Nfs, of both sizes, in thermosensitive liposomes via extrusion, and RhB was loaded in the lipid bilayer. All formulations proved hemocompatible and cytocompatible. We found that 35 nm Nfs, at lower concentrations than 15 nm Nfs, served better as nanoheaters for magnetic hyperthermia applications. In vitro, magnetic hyperthermia results showed promising therapeutic and imaging potential for RhB loaded magnetoliposomes containing 35 nm Nfs against LLC and CULA cell lines of lung adenocarcinoma.

Fluoride ions sorption using functionalized magnetic metal oxides nanocomposites: a review

Fluoride is an anionic pollutant found superfluous in surface or groundwater as a result of anthropogenic actions from improper disposal of industrial effluents. In drinking water, superfluous fluoride has been revealed to trigger severe health problems in humans. Hence, developing a comprehensive wastewater decontamination process for the effective management and preservation of water contaminated with fluoride is desirable, as clean water demand is anticipated to intensify considerably over the upcoming years. In this regard, there have been increased efforts by researchers to create novel magnetic metal oxide nanocomposites which are functionalized for the remediation of wastewater owing to their biocompatibility, cost-effectiveness, relative ease to recover and reuse, non-noxiousness, and ease to separate from solutions using a magnetic field. This review makes an all-inclusive effort to assess the effects of experimental factors on the sorption of fluoride employing magnetic metal oxide nanosorbents. The removal efficiency of fluoride ions onto magnetic metal oxides nanocomposites were largely influenced by the solution pH and ions co-existing with fluoride. Overall, it was noticed from the reviewed researches that the maximum sorption capacity using various metal oxides for fluoride sorption was in the order of aluminium oxides >cerium oxides > iron oxides > magnesium oxides> titanium oxides, and most sorption of fluoride ions was inhibited by the existence of phosphate trailed by sulphate. The mechanism of fluoride sorption onto various sorbents was due to ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and complexation mechanism.

Theranostic two-dimensional superparamagnetic maghemite quantum structures for ROS-mediated cancer therapy

In this work, size- and shape-controlled two-dimensional (2D) superparamagnetic maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) quantum flakes (MQFs) with high surface area and mesoporosity were prepared by facile hydrothermal synthesis for biological applications. These quantum flakes exhibited superparamagnetic behaviours over a wide temperature range of 75-950 K with high saturation magnetization of Ms - 23 emu g-1 and a lower coercivity of Hc - 6.1 Oe. MQFs also demonstrated a good colloidal stability and a positively charged flake surface. Selective toxicity dependent upon selective ROS scavenging/generation and cellular MQF uptake towards non-malignant human keratinocyte (HaCaT) and malignant melanoma (A357) and human breast cancer (MDA-MB 231) cell lines were witnessed. An increased ROS concentration resulted due to the peroxidase-like activity of MQFs in malignant cells. In contrast, ROS scavenging was observed in non-malignant cells due to dominant catalase-like activity. In vitro fluorescence properties added the diagnostic ability to the ambit of MQFs. Furthermore, the therapeutic efficiency could be significantly enhanced by the hyperthermic (25-47 °C) ability of MQF in cancerous cells. Our findings reveal the novel theranostic MQF structure with immense cancer therapeutic potential via augmentation of ROS generation by hyperthermia in a selective microenvironment.
