Association between particulate matter air pollution and risk of depression and suicide: systematic review and meta-analysis - RETRACTION

The association of exposure to air pollution and depression in women; a cross-sectional study of a middle-income country

Air pollution exposure has been related with mental disorders, especially depression; however, the available evidence on these associations in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) is scarce. Therefore, we aimed to assess the relationship between particulate matter (PM) exposure and indicators of traffic with depressive symptoms in women of Sabzevar, Iran. This cross-sectional study was based on 741 women aged 15-45 years (adults) in 2019. The annual average of PM₁₀, PM_2.5 and PM₁ at home was estimated using land use regression (LUR) models. Street map of Sabzevar was used to calculate the indicators of traffic, i.e., the proximity to major roads and total street length buffers with 100, 300 and 500 m radii around the participants' homes. We used the Center for Epidemiological Studies- Depression (CESD-20) Scale in the general population to measure depression scores. Quasi-Poisson models and logistic regression were used to examine the association and odds ratios of exposure to air pollution and depression scores adjusted for relevant covariates. Exposure to PM₁₀, PM_2.5 and PM₁ and total street length in 100 m buffer were significantly associated with higher depression scores. In fully adjusted model, an interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM₁₀, PM_2.5 and PM₁ concentration as well as total street length in 100 m buffer was associated with 1.25 (95% CI:1.03, 1.52, P-value = 0.02), 1.16 (95% CI: 1.06, 1.26, P-value< 0.01), 1.16 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.29, P-Value = 0.01) and 1.15 (95% CI: 1.06, 1.25, P-value< 0.01) odds of clinical depression, respectively. For street length in 300 and 500 m buffers and proximity to major roads, no statistically significant increased risk of clinical depression were observed. Overall, our findings recommended that air pollution exposure has increased the risk of clinical depression in women.

Contextual and individual factors associated with depressive symptoms in Latin American residents from eleven cities: Multilevel analysis

Depression is one of the most prevalent mental illnesses in the world. Its associated factors have been scarcely studied in the Latin American population. Our aim was to determine the contextual and individual factors associated with depressive symptoms (DS) in residents of 11 Latin American cities according to the 2019 CAF Survey (ECAF, acronym in Spanish). A multilevel analysis was performed to identify individual and contextual factors associated with DS. DS were measured by the short version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10). Of the 10,206 participants, 42.0% had DS in the week prior to the survey. Regarding the individual factors studied, women (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.65-1.99), smokers (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.16-1.45), obese, junk food eaters more than twice a week, single people, and a greater number of people in the household were associated with greater probabilities of having DS. On the other hand, a secondary (OR = 0.77; 95% CI: 0.67-0.88) or superior educational level (OR = 0.58; 95% CI: 0.50-0.68) were associated as protective factors. Regarding contextual factors, higher contamination levels (OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01-1.13) were associated with DS. Our study reports associations between individual and environmental factors and DS in residents of Latin America. These findings will allow the adoption of the necessary measures for decision-making and research to face this growing problem in developing countries.

Exposure to black carbon is associated with symptoms of depression: A retrospective cohort study in college students

BACKGROUND

Previous studies have revealed a significant association of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) with emotional disorders. However, as a crucial component of PM_2.5, little is known about the potential effect of exposure to black carbon (BC) on the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

OBJECTIVES

To explore the associations of long-term exposure to BC during the past six years with the current symptoms of depression and anxiety in a group of incoming college students.

METHODS

This was a retrospective cohort study of incoming students in five universities of China. Symptoms of depression and anxiety during the past two weeks were measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-2 (GAD-2), respectively. Levels of BC and other environmental factors during 2013 ∼ 2018 (six years prior to the recruitment) was obtained from public repositories and linked to individual data by home addresses. Averagely daily dose of BC exposure was estimated according to the respiratory rate. Demographic and behavioral variables were collected through a questionnaire. The associations of BC with symptoms of depression and anxiety were estimated by mixed linear models adjusting for socioeconomic and behavioral characteristics, and the principal components of multiple environmental exposures. Subgroup analysis was conducted to assess the effect modification by covariates. Overall effect of environmental mixture was evaluated by weighted quantile sum (WQS) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR).

RESULTS

A total of 20,079 participants was included in the current study. After adjustment for covariates, long-term BC exposure was significantly associated with symptoms of depression (β = 0.17, P < 0.001) but not anxiety (β = 0.07, P = 0.125). Effect modification by sex and parental educational level: BC was correlated with depressive symptoms in women (β = 0.23, P < 0.001) but not in men (β = 0.04, P = 0.581), and higher educational level was associated with decreased effect sizes of BC. Sensitivity analysis showed that the acute and short-term effects of BC on depression was consistent with its long-term exposure (β varied from 0.18 to 0.20). WQS identified BC as the primary pollutant in association with symptoms of depression but not anxiety. BKMR identified no significant interaction between BC and other exposures.

CONCLUSION

Exposure to BC is associated with symptoms of depression but not anxiety in college students, and the relationship is modified by sex and education.
