Ironing out the Details: Untangling Dietary Iron and Genetic Background in Diabetes

The search for genetic risk factors in type-II diabetes has been hindered by a failure to consider dietary variables. Dietary nutrients impact metabolic disease risk and severity and are essential to maintaining metabolic health. Genetic variation between individuals confers differences in metabolism, which directly impacts response to diet. Most studies attempting to identify genetic risk factors in disease fail to incorporate dietary components, and thus are ill-equipped to capture the breadth of the genome's impact on metabolism. Understanding how genetic background interacts with nutrients holds the key to predicting and preventing metabolic diseases through the implementation of personalized nutrition. Dysregulation of iron homeostasis is associated with type-II diabetes, but the link between dietary iron and metabolic dysfunction is poorly defined. High iron burden in adipose tissue induces insulin resistance, but the mechanisms underlying adipose iron accumulation remain unknown. Hepcidin controls dietary iron absorption and distribution in metabolic tissues, but it is unknown whether genetic variation influencing hepcidin expression modifies susceptibility to dietary iron-induced insulin resistance. This review highlights discoveries concerning the axis of iron homeostasis and adipose function and suggests that genetic variation underlying dietary iron metabolism is an understudied component of metabolic disease.

Iron: a Strong Element in the Pathogenesis of Chronic Hyperglycaemia After Acute Pancreatitis

Evidence shows an association between markers of iron metabolism and glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Acute pancreatitis is the largest contributor to diabetes of the exocrine pancreas. However, the pathogenesis of new-onset pre-diabetes or diabetes after pancreatitis remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate associations between markers of iron metabolism and glucose metabolism following acute pancreatitis. Fasting blood samples were collected to analyse markers of glucose metabolism (haemoglobin A1c) and iron metabolism (hepcidin, ferritin, and soluble transferrin receptor). Participants were categorised into two groups: normoglycaemia after acute pancreatitis and chronic hyperglycaemia after acute pancreatitis. Binary logistic and linear regression analyses were conducted, and potential confounders were adjusted for in multivariable analyses. A total of 83 individuals following an episode of acute pancreatitis were included, of whom 19 developed chronic hyperglycaemia. Hepcidin was significantly increased in individuals with chronic hyperglycaemia after acute pancreatitis in two adjusted models (p = 0.045 and p = 0.048). Ferritin was significantly decreased in individuals with chronic hyperglycaemia after acute pancreatitis in three adjusted models (p = 0.016, p = 0.009, and p = 0.011). Soluble transferrin receptor was not significantly associated with chronic hyperglycaemia after acute pancreatitis. These findings suggest that iron metabolism is significantly altered in individuals with chronic hyperglycaemia after acute pancreatitis and may provide better insights into the pathogenesis of new-onset diabetes after pancreatitis.

Evaluation of serum hepcidin and iron levels in patients with PCOS: a case-control study

PURPOSE

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of chronic anovulation with a prevalence of 5-10% in women of reproductive age. The etiology of this disease is not well known, and hepcidin is one of the factors affecting the pathogenesis of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate plasma levels of hepcidin in patients with PCOS and its correlation with serum iron level.

METHODS

In this case-control study, plasma levels of hepcidin, IL-6, and ferritin using ELISA method and serum iron levels using a spectrophotometric method were tested on 56 women with PCOS (case group) and 41 healthy subjects (control group). The results were analyzed using t test, General Linear Model, Binary logistic regression, and linear regression tests.

RESULTS

The mean hepcidin levels were 1.97 ± 0.53 and 2.40 ± 0.25 pg/ml in the case and control groups, respectively. The t-test results showed significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.0001). The mean serum iron levels were 72.89 ± 28.97 and 70.62 ± 31.18 g/dl in the case and control groups, respectively. The t test analysis indicated no significant difference between the two groups. The serum ferritin and iron levels had no significant relation with serum hepcidin level in two groups.

CONCLUSION

Despite the differences in the serum levels of hepcidin between the two groups, no significant relation was observed between serum iron levels and hepcidin level in this group of patients. This implies the need for more comprehensive studies on gene expression in hepcidin and iron pathways using real-time and Western techniques to investigate more precisely serum hepcidin level and its relationship with the factors mentioned.

HNF-4alpha Negatively Regulates Hepcidin Expression Through BMPR1A in HepG2 Cells

Hepcidin synthesis is reported to be inadequate according to the body iron store in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) undergoing hepatic iron overload (HIO). However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesize that hepatocyte nuclear factor-4α (HNF-4α) may negatively regulate hepcidin expression and contribute to hepcidin deficiency in NAFLD patients. The effect of HNF-4α on hepcidin expression was observed by transfecting specific HNF-4α small interfering RNA (siRNA) or plasmids into HepG2 cells. Both direct and indirect mechanisms involved in the regulation of HNF-4α on hepcidin were detected by real-time PCR, Western blotting, chromatin immunoprecipitation (chIP), and reporter genes. It was found that HNF-4α suppressed hepcidin messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expressions in HepG2 cells, and this suppressive effect was independent of the potential HNF-4α response elements. Phosphorylation of SMAD1 but not STAT3 was inactivated by HNF-4α, and the SMAD4 response element was found essential to HNF-4α-induced hepcidin reduction. Neither inhibitory SMADs, SMAD6, and SMAD7 nor BMPR ligands, BMP2, BMP4, BMP6, and BMP7 were regulated by HNF-4α in HepG2 cells. BMPR1A, but not BMPR1B, BMPR2, ActR2A, ActR2B, or HJV, was decreased by HNF-4α, and HNF4α-knockdown-induced stimulation of hepcidin could be entirely blocked when BMPR1A was interfered with at the same time. In conclusion, the present study suggests that HNF-4α has a suppressive effect on hepcidin expression by inactivating the BMP pathway, specifically via BMPR1A, in HepG2 cells.

A long-term high-fat diet changes iron distribution in the body, increasing iron accumulation specifically in the mouse spleen

Although iron is an essential trace metal, its presence in excess causes oxidative stress in the human body. Recent studies have indicated that iron storage is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dietary iron restriction or iron chelation ameliorates symptoms of type 2 diabetes in mouse models. However, whether iron content in the body changes with the development of diabetes is unknown. Here, we investigated the dynamics of iron accumulation and changes in iron absorption-related genes in mice that developed obesity and diabetes by consuming a high-fat diet (HFD-fed mice). HFD-fed mice (18-20 wk) were compared with control mice for hematologic features, serum ferritin levels, and iron contents in the gastrocnemius muscle, heart, epididymal fat, testis, liver, duodenum, and spleen. In addition, the spleen was examined histologically. Iron absorption-related gene expression in the liver and duodenum was also examined. Hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels were increased in HFD-fed mice. The HFD-fed mice showed iron accumulation in the spleen, but not in the heart or liver. Increased percentages of the splenic red pulp and macrophages were observed in HFD-fed mice and iron accumulation in the spleen was found mainly in the splenic red pulp. The HFD-fed mice also showed decreased iron content in the duodenum. The mRNA expression of divalent metal transporter-1 (DMT-1), an iron absorption-related gene, was elevated in the duodenum of HFD-fed mice. These results indicate that iron accumulation (specifically accumulation in the spleen) is enhanced by the development of type 2 diabetes induced by HFD.

Biomarkers of iron metabolism are independently associated with impaired glucose metabolism and type 2 diabetes: the KORA F4 study

OBJECTIVE

Iron has been suggested to play a role in the etiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Except for ferritin, evidence is sparse for other markers of iron metabolism that are regulated differently and might act through independent pathways. We therefore investigated the associations of serum ferritin, transferrin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), transferrin saturation (TSAT), sTfR-to-log10ferritin (sTfR-F) index, and iron with impaired glucose metabolism (IGM/'prediabetes'), T2DM, and four continuous glucose and insulin traits.

DESIGN AND METHODS

Data from 2893 participants of the population-based Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) F4 study (Germany) was investigated through regression analysis. The results were adjusted for socio-demographic, life-style, and obesity measures as well as metabolic, inflammatory, and other iron biomarkers following a step-wise approach. Non-linearity was tested by adding a non-linear spline component to the model.

RESULTS

Ferritin and transferrin were positively associated with IGM (fourth vs first sex-specific quartile: ferritin odds ratio (OR)=2.08 (95% CI 1.43-3.04) and transferrin OR=1.89 (95% CI 1.32-2.70)), T2DM (ferritin OR=1.98 (95% CI 1.22-3.22) and transferrin OR=2.42 (95% CI 1.54-3.81)), and fasting as well as 2-h glucose. TSAT (OR=0.55 (95% CI 0.34-0.88)) and iron (OR=0.61 (95% CI 0.38-0.97)) were inversely associated with T2DM, sTfR-F-index was inversely associated with IGM (OR=0.67 (95% CI 0.48-0.95)). There was no strong evidence for non-linear relationships.

CONCLUSIONS

The observed associations of several markers of iron metabolism with hyperglycemia and insulin resistance suggest that iron stores as well as iron-related metabolic pathways contribute to the pathogenesis of IGM and T2DM. Moreover, TSAT levels are decreased in T2DM patients.

Circulating hepcidin in type 2 diabetes: A multivariate analysis and double blind evaluation of metformin effects

SCOPE

Very few studies have evaluated serum hepcidin in patients with type 2 diabetes and they have reported conflicting results. In addition, the effect of antidiabetic drugs on circulating hepcidin has not been explored so far. The aims of the study were to evaluate hepcidin concentrations and hepcidin/ferritin ratio in type 2 diabetes subjects and healthy non-diabetic controls and to evaluate the effect of metformin on hepcidin concentrations.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Study 1: Cross-sectional multivariate study of 239 non-diabetic individuals and 65 people with type 2 diabetes. The multivariate analysis included covariates of chronic inflammation, BMI, pharmacological treatment, menopausal status and insulin resistance. Study 2: Randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled 4-month trial metformin compared to placebo among 36 type 2 diabetic patients. In both groups diet was controlled by maintaining a hypocaloric intake across the trial. Hepcidin levels were significantly lower in patients with type 2 diabetes than in non-diabetic individuals either in crude or adjusted regression models (P<0.05). Hepcidin decreased in both arms of the trial (Placebo, p = 0.004; metformin, p = 0.022).

CONCLUSION

Circulating hepcidin was significantly and independently lower in type 2 diabetes. Metformin treatment is not associated with reductions in hepcidin but hypocaloric diet could be involved.

Serum hepcidin concentrations and type 2 diabetes

Hepcidin is a peptide hormone with both paracrine and endocrine functions that help in maintaining body iron stores. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the sequelae of excess body iron stores; thus, iron regulatory hormone hepcidin may have a direct or at least an indirect role in the aetiopathogenesis of T2D. Both human and animal studies at molecular and genetic levels have attempted to establish a role for hepcidin in the development of T2D, and a few epidemiologic studies have also showed a link between hepcidin and T2D at population level, but the findings are still inconclusive. Recent data have suggested different pathways in which hepcidin could be associated with T2D with much emphasis on its primary or secondary role in insulin resistance. Some of the suggested pathways are via transcription modulator of hepcidin (STAT3); ferroportin 1 expression on the cells involved in iron transport; transmembrane protease 6 enzyme; and pro-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α and IL-10. This review briefly reports the existing evidence on the possible links between hepcidin and T2D and concludes that more data are needed to confirm or refute hepcidin’s role in the development of T2D. Examining this role could provide a further evidence base for iron in the aetiopathogenesis of T2D.

Associations between serum hepcidin, ferritin and Hb concentrations and type 2 diabetes risks in a Han Chinese population

Systemic Fe overload can contribute to abnormal glucose metabolism and the onset of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Although hepcidin is the master regulator of systemic Fe homeostasis, few studies have systematically evaluated the associations of serum hepcidin concentrations with Fe metabolism parameters and risks for the development of T2D. In this regard, whether hepcidin concentrations are associated with T2D remains controversial. We measured serum hepcidin and ferritin concentrations in a case–control study of 1259 Han Chinese participants to evaluate the possible associations of serum hepcidin concentrations with Fe metabolism parameters and risks of T2D. Individuals with diabetes (n 555) and control participants (n 704) were recruited and serum hepcidin and ferritin concentrations were quantified. Additionally, selected biochemical and anthropometric variables were determined. A logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association of serum hepcidin and ferritin concentrations with T2D. A linear regression analysis was used to test for associations between serum hepcidin and ferritin concentrations and a number of clinical, demographic and diabetes-associated variables. We found that serum hepcidin concentrations correlated with Hb and serum ferritin concentrations. No differences in hepcidin concentrations were found between the group with diabetes and the control group. Hepcidin concentrations were not significantly correlated with T2D risk factors. We also found that serum ferritin concentrations were elevated in individuals with diabetes and were positively correlated with both Hb concentrations and T2D risk factors. The present findings suggest that serum ferritin concentrations correlate with T2D risk factors, while serum hepcidin concentrations are positively associated with Hb and serum ferritin concentrations, but do not correlate with T2D.

Effects of excess dietary iron and fat on glucose and lipid metabolism

PURPOSE

Diets rich in fat and energy are associated with metabolic syndrome (MS). Increased body iron stores have been recognized as a feature of MS. High-fat diets (HFs), excess iron loading and MS are closely associated, but the mechanism linking them has not been clearly defined. We investigated the interaction between dietary fat and dietary Fe in the context of glucose and lipid metabolism in the body.

METHODS

C57BL6/J mice were divided into four groups and fed the modified AIN-93G low-fat diet (LF) and HF with adequate or excess Fe for 7 weeks. The Fe contents were increased by adding carbonyl iron (2% of diet weight) (LF+Fe and HF+Fe).

RESULTS

High iron levels increased blood glucose levels but decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The HF group showed increases in plasma levels of glucose and insulin and insulin resistance. HF+Fe mice showed greater changes. Representative indices of iron status, such hepatic and plasma Fe levels, were not altered further by the HF. However, both the HF and excess iron loading changed the hepatic expression of hepcidin and ferroportin. The LF+Fe, HF and HF+Fe groups showed greater hepatic fat accumulation compared with the LF group. These changes were paralleled by alterations in the levels of enzymes related to hepatic gluconeogenesis and lipid synthesis, which could be due to increases in mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress.

CONCLUSIONS

High-fat diets and iron overload are associated with insulin resistance, modified hepatic lipid and iron metabolism and increased mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress.

Insulin promotes iron uptake in human hepatic cell by regulating transferrin receptor-1 transcription mediated by hypoxia inducible factor-1

Hepatic iron is known to regulate insulin signaling pathways and to influence insulin sensitivity in insulin resistance (IR) patients. However, the role of insulin on hepatic iron homeostasis remains unexplored. Here, we report that insulin promotes transferrin-bound iron uptake but shows no influence on non transferrin-bound iron uptake in human hepatic HepG2 cells. As a mechanism we detected increased transferrin receptor-1 (TfR1) expression both at protein and mRNA levels. Unaltered stability of protein and transcript of TfR1 suggested the regulation at transcriptional level that was confirmed by promoter activity. Involvement of transcription factor hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) was shown by mutational analyses of the TfR1 promoter region and by electrophoretic mobility shift assay. When HepG2 cells were transfected with specific siRNA targeted to 3'UTR of HIF-1α, the regulatory subunit of HIF-1; insulin-induced TfR1 expression and iron uptake were inhibited. Transfection of cDNA expressing stable form of HIF-1α reversed the increased TfR1 expression and iron uptake. These results suggest a novel role of insulin in hepatic iron uptake by a HIF-1 dependent transcriptional regulation of TfR1.

Oxidative stress and metal carcinogenesis

Occupational and environmental exposures to metals are closely associated with an increased risk of various cancers. Although carcinogenesis caused by metals has been intensively investigated, the exact mechanisms of action are still unclear. Accumulating evidence indicates that reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by metals play important roles in the etiology of degenerative and chronic diseases. This review covers recent advances in (1) metal-induced generation of ROS and the related mechanisms; (2) the relationship between metal-mediated ROS generation and carcinogenesis; and (3) the signaling proteins involved in metal-induced carcinogenesis, especially intracellular reduction-oxidation-sensitive molecules.

Differential expression of iron metabolism proteins in diabetic and diabetic iron-supplemented rat liver

Diabetes mellitus is associated with altered iron homeostasis that can potentially effect reactive oxygen species generation and contribute to diabetes-related complications. We investigated, by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, whether the expression of liver hepcidin, ferritin, and TfR-1 is altered in diabetes. Rats in the control (C) group received a standard diet; control iron (CI) group received a standard diet supplemented with iron; diabetic (D) group received an injection of streptozotocin; and diabetic iron (DI) group received streptozotocin and the diet with iron. Animals of the D group showed higher levels of serum iron, increased concentration of carbonyl protein, and a decrease in antioxidant status. Group D rats showed increased hepatic expression of Trf-1 compared to the other groups. Iron supplementation reversed this increase. Hepcidin mRNA was 81% higher in DI than in C and CI rats. The results suggest that diabetes, with or without excess iron, can cause perturbations in iron status, hepcidin and Trf-1 expression.

Hepcidin expression and iron parameters change in Type 2 diabetic patients

AIM

Iron may contribute to the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of this study was to determine iron regulator hepcidin and iron metabolic parameters in Type 2 DM patients, the relationships among them were evaluated in this specific sub-groups.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study included sixty-four people: 34 cases of diabetes and 30 age-matched controls. Serum hepcidin, IL-6, hsCRP, ferritin, sTfR, EPO as well as other clinical parameters were detected, and the associations between hepcidin levels and iron/inflammatory parameters were analyzed in diabetes and the controls.

RESULTS

Serum ferritin and hepcidin levels in diabetic patients were significant higher than the controls (p<0.001 respectively). A positive correlation between hepcidin and ferritin, as well as between ferritin and IL-6 levels was existed in diabetes and the control groups (p<0.001 respectively).

CONCLUSION

All of these data demonstrated that the higher hepcidin levels in diabetic patients may be due to those higher ferritin and IL-6 levels, the elevated hepcidin might have adaptive value through down-regulated iron absorb and play an important role in pathogenesis of Type 2 DM.

Effects of the interaction of diabetes and iron supplementation on hepatic and pancreatic tissues, oxidative stress markers, and liver peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α expression

This study evaluated the effects of the interaction of diabetes and a carbonyl iron supplemented on hepatic and pancreatic tissues, oxidative stress markers and liver peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α expressions. Hamsters were divided: Control which received a standard AIN 93 diet; Control Iron, composed of control animals that received a diet with 0.83% carbonyl iron; Diabetic, composed of animals that received a injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) on day 35; and Diabetic Iron composed of streptozotocin treated animals that received a diet supplemented with carbonyl iron. Diabetes increased the glucose level and reduced triglycerides. Diabetic Iron group showed higher levels of glucose and serum triglycerides as compared to the Diabetic group. Diabetes decreased mRNA levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α. Iron attenuated the diabetes induced down regulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α mRNA. Moreover, diabetes increased carbonyl protein and decreased glutathione levels and catalase activity, while iron attenuated the increase in levels of carbonyl protein and attenuated the decrease in those of glutathione level and catalase activity. Histological analysis shows that supplementation iron caused an increase in the size of the islets in Control Iron. The results show that iron does not aggravated liver oxidant/antioxidant status and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α expression in diabetic hamsters.

Role of decreased circulating hepcidin concentrations in the iron excess of women with the polycystic ovary syndrome

CONTEXT

Hepcidin inhibits the intestinal absorption of iron and its deficiency causes juvenile hemochromatosis.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the investigation was to study the involvement of hepcidin in the iron overload of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

DESIGN

This was a case-control study followed by a randomized clinical trial.

SETTING

The study was conducted at an academic hospital.

PATIENTS

Thirty-four patients with PCOS and 30 women without hyperandrogenism, matched for age and body mass index, participated in the study.

INTERVENTION

Patients with PCOS were randomly allocated to treatment with either an antiandrogenic oral contraceptive or metformin for 24 wk.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Serum hepcidin levels and ferritin to hepcidin molar ratios were measured.

RESULTS

Patients with PCOS showed decreased circulating hepcidin levels and increased ferritin to hepcidin molar ratios compared with controls. Patients with PCOS presenting with chronic oligoamenorrhea (an iron sparing mechanism) showed a paradoxical decrease in serum hepcidin levels and an increase in ferritin to hepcidin molar ratios compared with the patients who had regular anovulatory menstrual cycles and with the controls. The major predictor of circulating hepcidin concentrations was the presence of PCOS, whereas the main determinants of the ferritin to hepcidin molar ratio were the insulin sensitivity index and menstrual dysfunction. Serum hepcidin levels did not change during treatment with either metformin or the antiandrogenic oral contraceptive pill, yet patients treated with the oral contraceptive pill normalized the ferritin to hepcidin molar ratio.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with PCOS had reduced serum hepcidin concentrations that might contribute to their iron overload by favoring the intestinal absorption of iron. The imbalance between increased iron stores and reduced hepcidin levels was related to the insulin resistance and androgen excess characteristic of this syndrome.

Relation between serum high molecular weight adiponectin and serum ferritin or prohepcidin in patients with type 2 diabetes

An increase of serum ferritin, an indicator of body iron store, is associated with insulin resistance and with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the general population. A low serum adiponectin is also associated with insulin resistance. Recently, hepcidin was identified as a regulator of iron metabolism. We investigated whether serum adiponectin was associated with serum ferritin or prohepcidin, a precursor of hepcidin, in healthy subjects and patients with type 2 diabetes. We studied 65 healthy subjects and 104 patients with type 2 diabetes. A serum ferritin concentration ≥ 300 ng/ml for men or ≥ 150 ng/ml for women was defined as hyperferritinemia. Serum ferritin was significantly higher and serum prohepcidin was significantly lower in diabetic patients than in control subjects. Serum total and high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin correlated negatively with serum ferritin in control subjects or diabetic patients, while serum total and HMW adiponectin correlated positively with serum prohepcidin in diabetic patients, but not in control subjects. Serum total and HMW adiponectin were lower in patients with hyperferritinemia than in those without it. In conclusion, serum ferritin was increased in type 2 diabetic patients, while serum prohepcidin was decreased. A high serum ferritin was associated with insulin resistance, and with low serum total and HMW adiponectin in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Pro-hepcidin and iron metabolism parameters in multi-time blood donors

A high number of blood donations may cause iron depletion. The pathophysiology behind this process may involve hepcidin, a recently discovered peptide that acts by inhibiting iron absorption and promoting iron retention in reticuloendothelial macrophages. The aim of this study was to determine serum pro-hepcidin levels and iron metabolism parameters in multi-time blood donors. The study group consisted of 132 multi-time male blood donors and 25 healthy male volunteers (nondonors). Complete blood cell count and iron status including serum iron, ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), total iron binding capacity (TIBC), unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC), erythropoietin and pro-hepcidin (ELISA) were assessed. In blood donors, ferritin level drops markedly in relation to donation frequency (P < 0.001). In contrast, TIBC and UIBC levels increase progressively corresponding to annual donation frequency. Pro-hepcidin concentration increases significantly with the number of donations per year (P = 0.0290). In blood donors having donated blood with the highest frequency per year, pro-hepcidin levels were positively correlated with haemoglobin (R = 0.31, P < 0.05) and negatively with sTfR (R = -0.31, P < 0.05). Pro-hepcidin levels increase in relation to blood donation frequency per year. Longitudinal studies focusing on changes in serum hepcidin levels are required to address the question whether hepcidin may contribute to iron metabolism disturbances in multi-times blood donors.
