Optimizing the white light emission in the solid state isatin and thiazole based molecular hybrids by introduction of variety of substituents on isatin and thiazole ring systems

An efficient and practical 3-component reaction strategy has been developed for the synthesis of a series of multi-colour emissive isatin-thiazole based fluorophores, thiazolylhydrazonoindolin-2-ones (4) from readily available isatins (1), thiosemicarbazide (2) and α-bromoketones (3) in the presence of biodegradable citric acid (0.1 N) in ethanol at reflux temperature for 40-60 min. The reaction proceeds via condensation (C[double bond, length as m-dash]N) and subsequent heterocyclization (C-S & C-N) in one-pot. Nature-friendly reaction profile, easy to perform, wide substrate scope, use of non-hazardous solvents/catalysts, good functional group tolerance, excellent yields (91-98%) in short reaction times, scalability and products do not require column chromatography purification are the attractive features of the present MCR strategy. The photophysical properties of the titled compounds (4) in both solid and solution states have been evaluated. The study reveals that the prepared isatin-thiazole based molecular hybrids exhibited tunable photophysical properties by varying the substituents on both isatin and thiazole motifs. To our delight, the titled compounds, 4k, 4l, 4m, 4u and 4y displayed white light emission with mega Stokes shifts in the solid state.

5-N-Arylaminothiazoles with pyridyl groups and their first-row transition metal complexes: synthesis, photophysical properties, and Zn sensing

A series of 5-N-arylaminothiazoles were synthesized with facile diversity-oriented synthesis from readily available starting materials via the reaction of thioamide dianions and thioformamides. The introduction of various substituents at the 2-position of a thiazole ring (i.e., 2-pyridyl, 4-methylpyridyl, and phenyl groups) and on the nitrogen atom (i.e., p-tolyl and phenyl groups) significantly influenced the absorption and emission spectra of the isolated compounds. X-ray analysis confirmed that the substituents at the amino site were twisted from a thiazole ring, while the formation of its nickel complex showed dinuclear metal complexes bridged with chlorine atoms. Moreover, the formation of zinc-thiazole complexes showed enhanced emission properties in solution and noticeable emission in a solid state. In addition, thiazole-bridged dypyrromethene type ligands showed high selectivity toward Zn+2, which make them good candidates for zinc sensing.

Mechano-Nanoarchitectonics: Design and Function

Mechanical stimuli have rather ambiguous and less-specific features among various physical stimuli, but most materials exhibit a certain level of responses upon mechanical inputs. Unexplored sciences remain in mechanical responding systems as one of the frontiers of materials science. Nanoarchitectonics approaches for mechanically responding materials are discussed as mechano-nanoarchitectonics in this review article. Recent approaches on molecular and materials systems with mechanical response capabilities are first exemplified with two viewpoints: i) mechanical control of supramolecular assemblies and materials and ii) mechanical control and evaluation of atom/molecular level structures. In the following sections, special attentions on interfacial environments for mechano-nanoarchitectonics are emphasized. The section entitled iii) Mechanical Control of Molecular System at Dynamic Interface describes coupling of macroscopic mechanical forces and molecular-level phenomena. Delicate mechanical forces can be applied to functional molecules embedded at the air-water interface where operation of molecular machines and tuning of molecular receptors upon macroscopic mechanical actions are discussed. Finally, the important role of the interfacial media are further extended to the control of living cells as described in the section entitled iv) Mechanical Control of Biosystems. Pioneering approaches on cell fate regulations at liquid-liquid interfaces are discussed in addition to well-known mechanobiology.

Stereoselective Transesterification of P-Chirogenic Hydroxybinaphthyl Phosphinates

The substitution reaction of phosphinates with a binaphthyloxy group at the phosphorus atom with lithium alkoxides proceeded with good to high efficiencies to give P-chirogenic phosphinates with a high enantiomeric ratio. As alcohols, primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols could be used, and the use of tert-butyl alcohol yielded the products with a higher enantiomeric ratio. A substrate with two different alkyl groups on the phosphorus atom could also participate in the substitution reaction to give the corresponding products in good yields with excellent selectivity. The molecular structures of one of the substrates and the corresponding products, determined by X-ray analyses, proved that the substitution reaction at the phosphorus atom proceeded with inversion of the absolute configuration. The usefulness of the reaction was demonstrated by using it to prepare a drug candidate for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Finally, thionation of the resulting phosphinates was carried out to form P-chirogenic phosphinothioates.

Primary Phosphines and Phosphine Oxides with a Stereogenic Carbon Center Adjacent to the Phosphorus Atom: Synthesis and Anti-Markovnikov Radical Addition to Alkenes

Organophosphorus compounds with stereogenic phosphorus and carbon atoms have received increasing attention. In this regards, primary phosphines with a stereogenic carbon atom adjacent to the phosphorus atom were synthesized by the reduction in phosphonates and phosphonoselenoates with a binaphthyl group. Their oxidized products, i.e., phosphine oxides with a stereogenic tetrasubstituted carbon atom, were found to undergo BEt3-mediated radical addition to cyclohexene to give P-stereogenic secondary phosphine oxides with a diastereoselectivity of 91:9. The products were characterized by ordinary analytical methods, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopies; and mass spectroscopy. Computational studies on the phosphorus-centered radical species and the obtained product implied that the thermodynamically stable radical and the adduct may be formed as a major diastereomer. The radical addition to a range of alkenes took place in an anti-Markovnikov fashion to give P-stereogenic secondary phosphine oxides. A variety of functional groups in the alkenes were tolerated under the reaction conditions to afford secondary phosphine oxides in moderate yields. Primary phosphines with an alkenyl group, which were generated in situ, underwent intramolecular cyclization to give five- and six-membered cyclic phosphines in high yields after protection by BH3.

Mechanochromic Luminescence (MCL) of Purely Organic Two-Component Dyes: Wide-Range MCL over 300 nm and Two-Step MCL by Charge-Transfer Complexation

Despite recent extensive studies on mechanochromic luminescence (MCL), rational control over the magnitude of the emission-wavelength shift in response to mechanical stimuli remains challenging. In the present study, a two-component donor-acceptor approach has been applied to create a variety of organic MCL composites that exhibit remarkable emission-wavelength switching. Dibenzofuran-based bis(1-pyrenylmethyl)diamine and typical organic fluorophores have been employed as donor and acceptor dyes, respectively. Outstanding wide-range MCL with an emission-wavelength shift of over 300 nm has been achieved by mixing the diamine with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide. Unprecedented two-step MCL in response to mechanical stimuli of different intensity has also been realized for a two-component mixture with 9,10-anthraquinone. Fluorescence microscopy observations at the single-particle level revealed that the segregation and mixing of the two-component dyes contribute to the stimuli-responsive emission-color switching of the MCL composites.
