A Novel Electrochemical Sensing Strategy Based on Poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene): Polystyrene Sulfonate, AuNPs, and Ag+ for Highly Sensitive Detection of Alkaline Phosphatase

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a crucial marker for the clinical analysis and detection of many diseases. In this study, an accurate signal amplification strategy was proposed for the sensing and quantification of alkaline phosphatase using poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and Ag⁺. Signal amplification was achieved by the modification of PEDOT:PSS and AuNPs on glassy carbon electrodes. Atomic force microscopy was performed to characterize the morphology of the modified nanomaterials. To detect ALP, 1-naphthyl phosphate (1-NP) was used as the substrate, and alkaline phosphatase catalyzed 1-NP into 1-naphthol (1-N), which resulted in the reduction of Ag⁺ to Ag⁰ on the surface of the modified electrode (AuNPs/PEDOT:PSS/GCE). The deposition of Ag drastically enhanced the detection signal. Differential pulse voltammograms of 1-N, which is the enzymatic product from the ALP reaction with 1-NP, were recorded. In the linear range of 0.1-120 U L^-1, a quantitative analysis of alkaline phosphatase was achieved, with high sensitivity and a low detection limit of 0.03 U L^-1. Stable, selective, and reproducible electrochemical sensors were designed. Moreover, the proposed electrochemical sensor exhibited a prominent sensing performance in the spiked diluted human serum. Thus, the sensor can be used in numerous applications in alkaline phosphatase or other analyte detection.

A Core–Shell Au@TiO2 and Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Based Sensor for the Electroanalytical Determination of H2O2 in Human Blood Serum and Saliva

A hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) sensor was developed based on core–shell gold@titanium dioxide nanoparticles and multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode (Au@TiO₂/MWCNTs/GCE). Core–shell Au@TiO₂ material was prepared and characterized using a scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Zeta-potential analyzer. The proposed sensor (Au@TiO₂/MWCNTs/GCE) was investigated electrochemically using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The analytical performance of the sensor was evaluated towards H₂O₂ using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The proposed sensor exhibited excellent stability and sensitivity with a linear concentration range from 5 to 200 µM (R² = 0.9973) and 200 to 6000 µM (R² = 0.9994), and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.4 µM achieved under physiological pH conditions. The practicality of the proposed sensor was further tested by measuring H₂O₂ in human serum and saliva samples. The observed response and recovery results demonstrate its potential for real-world H₂O₂ monitoring. Additionally, the proposed sensor and detection strategy can offer potential prospects in electrochemical sensors development, indicative oxidative stress monitoring, clinical diagnostics, general cancer biomarker measurements, paper bleaching, etc.

Electron energy loss spectroscopy and first-principles study of GaN via Zn doping

The electronic structure of GaN and GaN:Zn was investigated by electron energy loss spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. In the low-loss spectrum, the interband transitions are assigned to the observed energy loss peaks. After Zn doping, impurity levels are introduced to the density of states and hybrid orbitals of N 2p and Zn 3d are formed around the Fermi level. In the nitrogen K-edge, an additional peak was observed due to the formation of donor defect states. A core-hole effect is believed to be significant for simulation of the N K-edge for both GaN and GaN:Zn.
