Abstract
A multiple-hydrogen-bond approach was applied to shorten Pt-X-Pt distances in Cl- and Br-bridged Pt chain complexes. [Pt(dabdOH)2Cl]Cl2 (5) and [Pt(dabdOH)2Br]Br2 (6) (dabdOH = (2 S,3 S)-2,3-diaminobutane-1,4-diol) contain hydroxy groups, which form additional hydrogen bonds with counteranions. 5 has the shortest Pt-Cl-Pt distance (5.0747(8) Å) of all Cl-bridged Pt chain complexes reported to date. Furthermore, the smallest optical gap (1.45 eV for 5 and 1.19 eV for 6) in any Cl- or Br-bridged Pt chain complex was achieved. 6 has the highest electrical conductivity (1.9 × 10-5 S cm-1 at room temperature) of all Br-bridged Pt chain complexes. This study shows that the introduction of additional hydrogen bonds between the ligands and halides is effective to enhance the electronic properties of halogen-bridged metal complexes.

Abstract
One-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers (CPs) experiences limitations in exfoliation into individual strands, which hamper their utility as functional 1D nanomaterials. Here we synthesize chiral 1D-CPs that feature the bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complex motif. They can be exfoliated into single strands upon sonication in organic media, retaining lengths of up to 3.19 μm (ca. 2600 monomer units). Their chiroptical structure allows the exfoliated wires to show circularly polarized luminescence at an intensity 5.9 times that of reference monomer complexes.

Abstract
We present a comprehensive study of the temperature dependence of the crystal structure using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and diffuse scattering, and electrical transport and magnetic properties as well as some optical properties at room temperature to elucidate the origin and the form of multiple ground states demonstrated in a previous study of the heat-capacity of the MMX chain compound, [Pt(II/III)(2)(n-PenCS(2))(4)I](∞). The present results confirm the presence of the two phase transitions, one reversible of first order at 207 K and the other nonreversible monotropic at 324 K, separating the low temperature (LT), room temperature (RT), and high temperature (HT) phases. The unit cell displays a 3-fold periodicity of -Pt-Pt-I- in the RT and HT phases because of the structural disorder which is exhibited by the dithiocarboxylato groups and the n-pentyl groups belonging to the central diplatinum unit. In addition, for the HT-phase all the dimers show this disorder. This compound undergoes a metal-semiconductor transition at T(M-S) = 235 K. The presence of diffuse streaks corresponding to 2-fold -Pt-Pt-I- periodicity in the HT and RT phases indicates dynamic valence ordering of the type -Pt(2+)-Pt(2+)-I(-)-Pt(3+)-Pt(3+)-I(-)-or-Pt(2+)-Pt(3+)-I(-)-Pt(3+)-Pt(2+)-I(-)-. For the LT-phase the diffuse scattering is condensed into clear Bragg diffraction peaks while keeping the 3-fold periodicity. This fact suggests further localization through dimerization of charges and spins confirming the diamagnetic state in the magnetic susceptibility and the low electrical conduction below 207 K. The present results are further discussed in relation to those of previous studies on the homologues, [Pt(II/III)(2)(RCS(2))(4)I](∞), R = methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, and n-butyl.

Effect of an in-plane ligand on the electronic structures of bromo-bridged nano-wire Ni-Pd mixed-metal complexes, [Ni(1-x)Pd(x)(bn)2Br]Br2 (bn = 2S,3S-diaminobutane). Inorg Chem 2009; 48:7446-51. Abstract
Single crystals of quasi-one-dimensional bromo-bridged Ni-Pd mixed-metal complexes with 2S,3S-diaminobutane (bn) as an in-plane ligand, [Ni(1-x)Pd(x)(bn)(2)Br]Br(2), were obtained by using an electrochemical oxidation method involving mixed methanol/2-propanol (1:1) solutions containing different ratios of [Ni(II)(bn)(2)]Br(2) and [Pd(II)(bn)(2)]Br(2). To investigate the competition between the electron-correlation of the Ni(III) states, or Mott-Hubbard states (MH), and the electron-phonon interaction of the Pd(II)-Pd(IV) mixed valence states, or charge-density-wave states (CDW), in the Ni-Pd mixed-metal compounds, X-ray structure analyses, X-ray oscillation photograph, and Raman, IR, ESR, and single-crystal reflectance spectra were analyzed. In addition, the local electronic structures of Ni-Pd mixed-metal single crystals were directly investigated by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at room temperature and ambient pressure. The oxidation states of [Ni(1-x)Pd(x)(bn)(2)Br]Br(2) changed from a M(II)-M(IV) mixed valence state to a M(III) MH state at a critical mixing ratio (x(c)) of approximately 0.8, which is lower than that of [Ni(1-x)Pd(x)(chxn)(2)Br]Br(2) (chxn = 1R,2R-diaminocyclohexane) (x(c) approximately 0.9) reported previously. The lower value of x(c) for [Ni(1-x)Pd(x)(bn)(2)Br]Br(2) can be explained by the difference in their CDW dimensionalities because the three-dimensional CDW ordering in [Pd(bn)(2)Br]Br(2) observed by using X-ray diffuse scattering stabilizes the Pd(II)-Pd(IV) mixed valence state more than two-dimensional CDW ordering in [Pd(chxn)(2)Br]Br(2) does, which has been reported previously.
