Abstract
Pentalenes are formally eight-π-electron antiaromatic, but π-expanded pentalenes can display varying levels of paratropicity depending on the choice of annelated (hetero)arenes and the geometry of π-expansion (i.e., linear vs bent topologies) around the [4n] core. Here, we explain the effects of annelation on the paratropicity of π-expanded pentalenes by relating the electronic structure of pentalenes to a pair of conjoined pentafulvenes.

Abstract

Photoinduced tuning of (anti)aromaticity and associated
molecular
properties is currently in the focus of attention for both tailoring
photochemical reactivity and designing new materials. Here, we report
on the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of diarylethene-based
molecular switches embedded in a biphenylene structure composed of
rings with different levels of local (anti)aromaticity. We show that
it is possible to modulate and control the (anti)aromatic character
of each ring through reversible photoswitching of the aryl units of
the system between open and closed forms. Remarkably, it is shown
that the irreversible formation of an annulated bis(dihydro-thiopyran)
side-product that hampers the photoswitching can be efficiently suppressed
when the aryl core formed by thienyl groups in one switch is replaced
by thiazolyl groups in another.

Abstract
The synthesis and properties of a series of unsymmetrical thienopentalenes are explored, including both monoareno and diareno derivatives. For the synthesis of monoareno pentalenes, a carbopalladation cascade reaction between alkynes and gem-dibromoolefins was applied. Diareno pentalene derivatives were accessed via gold-catalyzed cyclization of diynes. Thiophene was fused to pentalene in two different geometries via its 2,3 and 3,4 bonds. 2,3-Fusion resulted in increased antiaromaticity of the pentalene unit compared to the 3,4-fusion both in the monoareno and diareno framework. Monothienopentalenes that contained the destabilizing 2,3-fusion could not be isolated. For diareno derivatives, the aromatic character of the different aryl groups fused to the pentalene was not independent. Destabilizing fusion on one side resulted in alleviated aromaticity on the other side and vice versa. The synthesized molecules were characterized experimentally by 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry, and X-ray crystallography, and their aromatic character was assessed using magnetic (NICS and ACID) and electronic indices (MCI and FLU).

Abstract
We examine the effects of fusing two benzofurans to s-indacene (indacenodibenzofurans, IDBFs) and dicyclopenta[b,g]naphthalene (indenoindenodibenzofurans, IIDBFs) to control the strong antiaromaticity and diradical character of these core units. Synthesis via 3-functionalized benzofuran yields syn-IDBF and syn-IIDBF. syn-IDBF possesses a high degree of paratropicity, exceeding that of the parent hydrocarbon, which in turn results in strong diradical character for syn-IIDBF. In the case of the anti-isomers, synthesized via 2-substituted benzofurans, these effects are decreased; however, both derivatives undergo an unexpected ring-opening reaction during the final dearomatization step. All the results are compared to the benzothiophene-fused analogues and show that the increased electronegativity of oxygen in the syn-fused derivatives leads to enhancement of the antiaromatic core causing greater paratropicity. For syn-IIDBF increased diradical character results from rearomati-zation of the core naphthalene unit in order to relieve this paratropicity.

Abstract
The phenomenon of antiaromaticity-aromaticity interplay in aromatic-antiaromatic (A-aA)-fused systems is studied using molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) analysis, which clearly brings out the electron-rich π-regions of molecular systems. Benzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene are the aromatic units and cyclobutadiene and pentalene are the antiaromatic units considered to construct the A-aA-fused systems. The fused system is seen to reduce the antiaromaticity by adopting a configuration containing the least number of localized bonds over antiaromatic moieties. This is clearly observed in 25 isomers of a fused system composed of three naphthalene and two cyclobutadiene units. Denoting the number of π-bonds in the cyclobutadiene rings by the notation (n, n'), the systems belonging to the class (0, 0) and (2, 2) turn out to be the most and least stable configurations, respectively. The stability of the fused system depends on the empty π-character of the antiaromatic ring, hence naphthalene and benzene prefer to fuse with cyclobutadiene in a linear and angular fashion, respectively. Generally, a configuration with the maximum number of 'empty' rings (0, 0, 0, ...) is considered to be the most stable for the given A-aA system. The stability and aromatic/antiaromatic character of A-aA-fused systems with pentalene is also interpreted in a similar way. MESP topology, clearly bringing out the distribution of double bonds in the fused systems, leads to a simple interpretation of the aromatic/antiaromatic character of them. Also, it leads to powerful predictions on stable macrocyclic A-aA systems.

Abstract
Carbon bridging in a form of a strained 1,4-dihydropentalene framework is an effective strategy for flattening and stabilizing oligophenylenevinylene systems for the development of optoelectronic materials. However, efficient and flexible methods for making such a strained ring system are lacking. We report herein a mild and versatile synthetic access to the 1,4-dihydropentalene framework enabled by iron-catalyzed single-pot tandem cyclization of a diarylacetylene using FeCl2 and PPh3 as catalyst, magnesium/LiCl as a reductant, and 1,2-dichloropropane as a mild oxidant. The new annulation method features two iron-catalyzed transformations used in tandem, a reductive acetylenic carboferration and an oxidation-induced ring contraction of a ferracycle under mild oxidative conditions. The new method provides access not only to a variety of substituted indeno[2,1-a]indenes but also to their thiophene congeners, 4,9-dihydrobenzo[4,5]pentaleno[1,2-b]thiophene (CPTV) and 4,8-dihydropentaleno[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophenes (CTV). With its high highest occupied molecular orbital level and narrow optical gap, CTV serves as a donor unit in a narrow-band-gap non-fullerene acceptor, which shows absorption extending over 1000 nm in the film state, and has found use in a near-infrared photodetector device that exhibited an external quantum efficiency of 72.4% at 940 nm.

Abstract
![]()
According
to the currently accepted structure–property relationships,
aceno-pentalenes with an angular shape (fused to the 1,2-bond of the
acene) exhibit higher antiaromaticity than those with a linear shape
(fused to the 2,3-bond of the acene). To explore and expand the current
view, we designed and synthesized molecules where two isomeric, yet,
different, 8π antiaromatic subunits, a benzocyclobutadiene (BCB)
and a pentalene, are combined into, respectively, an angular and a
linear topology via an unsaturated six-membered ring. The antiaromatic
character of the molecules is supported experimentally by 1H NMR, UV–vis, and cyclic voltammetry measurements and X-ray
crystallography. The experimental results are further confirmed by
theoretical studies including the calculation of several aromaticity
indices (NICS, ACID, HOMA, FLU, MCI). In the case of the angular molecule,
double bond-localization within the connecting six-membered ring resulted
in reduced antiaromaticity of both the BCB and pentalene subunits,
while the linear structure provided a competitive situation for the
two unequal [4n]π subunits. We found that in
the latter case the BCB unit alleviated its unfavorable antiaromaticity
more efficiently, leaving the pentalene with strong antiaromaticity.
Thus, a reversed structure–antiaromaticity relationship when
compared to aceno-pentalenes was achieved.

Abstract
Pentalenes represent highly reactive Hückel antiaromatics with 8π electrons. Usually, pentalenes are stabilized by incorporation of two benzene rings in a fused fashion. In dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes, however, the high aromaticity of the fused benzene rings compromises the inherent antiaromaticity of the pentalene core. Herein, we disclose that this forfeited antiaromaticity can be restored by fusing four additional aromatic rings onto the peripheral positions of dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes. Such polycyclic pentalenes were prepared by successive transannular cyclizations via in situ-generated tetrakisdehydro[16]annulenes. The thus obtained compounds showed intriguing properties, for example, characteristic absorptions in the visible-to-near-infrared (NIR) region and low reduction potentials. These results hence afford a design principle to produce highly antiaromatic yet stable pentalenes. The antiaromaticity of the pentalene core can be widely tuned via the degree of aromaticity of the peripherally fused rings.

Abstract
A new method based on a palladium-catalyzed tandem reaction for the fast construction of a dianthraceno[a,e]pentalene (DAP) framework is developed, which gave a series of dianthraceno[a,e]pentalenes with good functional group tolerance, and it should be highlighted that five C–C bonds were formed in one reaction.

Abstract
Understanding and controlling the electronic structure of molecules is crucial when designing and optimizing new organic semiconductor materials. We report the regioselective synthesis of eight π-expanded diarenoindacene analogues based on the indeno[1,2-b]fluorene framework along with the computational investigation of an array of diareno-fused antiaromatic compounds possessing s-indacene, pentalene, or cyclobutadiene cores. Analysis of the experimental and computationally derived optoelectronic properties uncovered a linear correlation between the bond order of the fused arene bond and the paratropicity strength of the antiaromatic unit. The Ered1 for the pentalene and indacene core molecules correlates well with their calculated NICSπZZ values. The findings of this study can be used to predict the properties of, and thus rationally design, new diareno-fused antiaromatic molecules for use as organic semiconductors.

Abstract
A rhodium-catalysed stitching reaction between 2-(silylethynyl)arylboronates and 2-(silylethynyl)aryl bromides has been developed for the synthesis of unsymmetric dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes. The introduction of appropriately sized silyl groups on the starting substrates led to a high crossover selectivity without using an excess amount of either substrate. The present stitching reaction could produce a variety of unsymmetric dibenzo[a,e]pentalene derivatives, including those with electronically different substituents on the fused benzene rings as well as heteroarene fused compounds. Desilylative halogenation was also demonstrated to synthesise the corresponding halogenated dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes, which can be used as building blocks for further chemical transformations.

Abstract
4,5-Dimethyl-1,2-bis(1-naphthylethynyl)benzene (12) undergoes a rapid multiple ring-closure reaction upon treatment with the strong boron Lewis acid B(C6F5)3 to yield the multiply annulated, planar conjugated π-system 13 (50 % yield). In the course of this reaction, a C6F5 group was transferred from boron to carbon. Treatment of 12 with CH3B(C6F5)2 proceeded similarly, giving a mixture of 13 (C6F5-transfer) and the product 15, which was formed by CH3-group transfer. 1,2-Bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (8 a) reacts similarly with CH3B(C6F5)2 to yield a mixture of the respective C6F5- and CH3-substituted dibenzopentalenes 10 a and 16. The reaction is thought to proceed through zwitterionic intermediates that exhibit vinyl cation reactivities. Some B(C6F5)3-substituted species (26, 27) consequently formed by in situ deprotonation upon treatment of the respective 1,2-bis(alkynyl)benzene starting materials (24, 8) with the frustrated Lewis pair B(C6F5)3/P(o-tolyl)3. The overall formation of the C6F5-substituted products formally require HB(C6F5)2 cleavage in an intermediate dehydroboration step. This was confirmed in the reaction of a thienylethynyl-containing starting material 21 with B(C6F5)3, which gave the respective annulated pentalene product 23 that had the HB(C6F5)2 moiety 1,4-added to its thiophene ring. Compounds 12-14, 23, and 26 were characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
Herein, a dual-gold catalyzed cyclization of 3,4-diethynylthiophenes generating pentaleno[c]thiophenes through gold-vinylidenes and C-H bond activation is disclosed. Various new heteroaromatic compounds--substrate classes unexplored to date--exhibiting three five-membered annulated ring systems could be synthesized in moderate to high yields. By comparison of the solid-state structures of the corresponding gold-acetylides, it could be demonstrated that the cyclization mode (5-endo versus 6-endo) is controlled by the electronic and not steric nature of the diyne backbone. Depending on different backbones, we calculated thermodynamic stabilities and full potential-energy surfaces giving insight into the crucial dual-activation cyclization step. In the case of the 3,4-thiophene backbone, in which the initial cyclization is rate and selectivity determining, two energetically distinct transition states could be localized explaining the observed 5-endo cyclization mode by classical transition-state theory. In the case of vinyl and 2,3-thiophene backbones, the theoretical analysis of the cyclization mode in the bifurcated cyclization area demonstrated that classical transition-state theory is no longer valid to explain the high experimentally observed selectivity. Herein, for the first time, the influence of the backbone and the aromatic stabilization effect of the 6-endo product in the crucial cyclization step could be visualized and quantified by calculating and comparing the full potential-energy surfaces.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and fully-conjugated ladder polymers are leading candidates for organics electronics, as their inherent conformational rigidity encourages electron delocalization. Many of these systems consist of fused benzenoid or heterocyclic aromatic rings. Less frequently, however, PAHs are reported with character that alternates between the aromaticity of benzene fragments and the antiaromaticity of a nonbenzenoid moiety. This chapter will focus on recent work published on the theory, synthesis, and properties of two such systems: [N]phenylenes containing 4π-electron cyclobutadienoid character, and diaryl[a,e]pentalenes containing 8π-electron pentalenoid character.
