Abstract
Six labdane diterpene derivatives, named turraeanins F-J (3-6, 8) and epi-turraeanin J (7), and a pregnane steroid derivative named turraeasterodionene (2), were isolated by preparative high performance liquid chromatography together with thirteen known compounds from the Cameroonian medicinal plant Turraeanthus africanus. Their structures were elucidated by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry in conjunction with the published data for the analogs, as well as the fragmentation patterns of each compound. Most of the known compounds were obtained for the first time from this plant. The compounds (2-7) were tested for their antibacterial efficacies against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some clinically-important Risk group 2 human pathogens. Compound 4 exhibited the most pronounced antibacterial effectiveness comparable to standard reference streptomycin, with more potency against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria. By comparing compounds 3, 4 and 5, a tentative structure-activity relationship could be drawn; selected oxidations at C-16 and C-18 drastically reduced the antibacterial efficacy of the parent compound (4). These results revealed the potential of compound 4 as a suitable antibacterial lead compound that might be used for further development of other derivatives to increase the antimicrobial efficacy.

Abstract
Chemical investigation of the root bark of Turraeanthus mannii and the stem of T. longipes resulted in the isolation of two new diterpenes, 13-methyl-labda-8(17)-en-15-oic acid (1) and 13-(hydroxymethyl)-14-hydroxy- ent-labda-8(17)-en-15-oic acid (2), along with two known diterpenes, 19-hydroxy- ent-labda-8(17),13-dien-15,16-olide (3) and 19-acetoxy- ent-labda-8(17),13-dien-15,16-olide (4), and the phytosterol, stigmasterol. The structure elucidation of the new compounds has been achieved using spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract
Chemical investigation of the roots and fruits of Zanthoxylumleprieurii Guill. et Perr. led to the isolation of three new alkaloids including two acridone derivatives, 3-hydroxy-1,4-dimethoxy-10-methyl-9-acridone (2) and 3-hydroxy-1,2-dimethoxy-10-methyl-9-acridone (3) named helebelicine A and B, respectively, and one secobenzo[c]phenantridine, 10-O-demethyl-12-O-methylarnottianamide (10), together with thirteen other compounds. The structures of compounds 2, 3 and 10 as well as those of the known compounds were elucidated by using spectroscopic methods and by comparison with reported data. The brine-shrimp (artemia salina) lethality bioassay of the chloroform extract of the fruits showed modest cytotoxicity with LD(50) at 13.1microg/mL. Isolated compounds 1, 4-6 were found to be moderately active against lung carcinoma cells (A549), colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (DLD-1) and normal cells (WS1) with IC(50) values ranging from 27 to 77microM. In contrast to the positive control etoposide used, the cytotoxicity of the most active compound 4 was found to be selective against cancer cells in comparison to normal cells WS1 with IC(50) of 51+/-8microM and 4.3+/-0.4microM, respectively.

Abstract
An efficient short total synthesis of benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids including oxyavicine, oxynitidine, and oxysanguinarine is described. Thus, N-methyl-o-bromobenzaldimines 1 b-d undergo regioselective cyclization with 4-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)but-3-yn-1-ol (2 b) in the presence of [Ni(cod)(2)] (cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene). In situ oxidation of the resultant isoquinolinium salts gives isoquinolinone derivatives 5 b-d with benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl substitution at the C(3) atom and a (CH(2))(2)OH group at the C(4) atom. Later, oxidation of the alcohol group in 5 b-d to the aldehyde moiety followed by acid-catalyzed cyclization and dehydration completes the total syntheses to give oxyavicine, oxynitidine, and oxysanguinarine in 67, 65, and 60 % yields, respectively. The synthesis requires four steps from o-bromobenzaldehyde derivatives. Transformations of these alkaloids to the other alkaloids in this family are also discussed herein.
