Abstract
An analysis of the processes of radiotherapy treatment planning is presented and explained. The application in radiotherapy in Glasgow of a variety of computers to the different parts of these processes is described under the headings: data preparation and input, software and processing, output and presentation. It has been advantageous to have specialised hardware constructed in order to simplify input. The process of computer optimisation can complete the loop formed by the comparison of the calculated and the preselected dose distributions. Nine British radiotherapy centres have joined, with Glasgow, in a co-operative group to share expertise and programmes.
