Respiratory physiological exploration during self-induced cognitive trance

BACKGROUND AND METHODS

Little is known about self-induced cognitive trance (SICT) on respiratory function. The aims of this prospective, single-center, non-randomized, open-label study of healthy volunteers, were to characterize spirometry changes during SICT, confirm the safety of this technique, and investigate the potential clinical benefits of SICT.

RESULTS

Nine people participated. There were no significant difference in FEV1 FVC or FEF 25-75 before, during, and after SICT. There were significant improvements in grip strength during SICT (+2.2 kg/5.7 %, p<0.05) and in self-efficacy score related to physical activity at the end of the trance. One participant had a significant worsening of FEV1 during SICT in the context of a recent upper airway infection.

CONCLUSION

SICT does not significantly modify spirometry data in healthy volunteers and can improve self-efficacy related to physical activity. SICT should probably be performed with caution during upper airway infections.

Qualitative analysis of first-person accounts of noetic experiences

The term "noetic" comes from the Greek word noēsis/noētikos that means inner wisdom, direct knowing, intuition, or implicit understanding. Strong cultural taboos exist about sharing these experiences. Thus, many may not feel comfortable transparently discussing or researching these topics, despite growing evidence that these experiences may be real. The study's objective was to qualitatively evaluate first-hand accounts of noetic experiences. 521 English-speaking adults from around the world completed an online survey that collected demographic data and four open-ended questions about noetic experiences. Thematic analysis was used to characterize the data. The ten most used codes were expressing to or sharing with others, impacting decision-making, intuition/"just knowing," meditation/hypnosis, inner visions, setting intentions/getting into the "state," healing others, writing for self, and inner voice. There were five main themes identified: 1. Ways of Engagement; 2. Ways of Knowing; 3. Types of Information; 4. Ways of Affecting; and 5. Ways of Expressing. Subthemes. Future research will include investigating the nuances of these themes and also establishing standardized methods for evaluating them. This would also then inform curricula and therapies to support people in these experiences.

"Seat of the soul"? The structure and function of the pineal gland in women with alleged spirit possession-Results of two experimental studies

BACKGROUND

Cultural traditions attribute to pineal gland an important role for spiritual experiences. Mediumship and spirit possession are cultural phenomena found worldwide which have been described as having dissociative and psychotic-like characteristics, but with nonpathological aspects. A sympathetic activation pattern in response to spirit possession has been reported in some studies, but empirical data on pineal gland is scarce in this context.

METHODS

We aimed to investigate pineal gland and pituitary volumes, as well as urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin levels in 16 alleged mediums (Medium Group-MG) compared with 16 healthy nonmedium controls (Control Group) (Experiment 1). Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin and stress reactivity in GM (n = 10) under different physiological conditions (Experiment 2).

RESULTS

In Experiment 1, MG presented higher scores of anomalous experiences, but there were no between-group differences regarding mental health or subjective sleep quality. Similar pineal gland and pituitary volumes were observed between groups. There were no between-group differences in urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin collected under equivalent baseline conditions. In Experiment 2, the rise of anxiety and heart rate in response to mediumistic experience was intermediate between a nonstressful control task (reading) and a stressful control task (Trier Social Stress Test-TSST). No significant differences were observed in 6-sulfatoxymelatonin urinary levels between the three conditions. The pattern of stress reactivity during the TSST was normal, but with an attenuated salivary cortisol response.

CONCLUSION

The normal neuroimaging and stress reactivity findings in MG contrast with the abnormal results usually observed in subjects with psychotic and dissociative disorders.
