Abstract
The greater and lesser omenta are fused peritoneal folds that largely delimit the omental bursa (lesser peritoneal cavity). The omental bursa is a potential space within the abdominal cavity that communicates with the greater peritoneal cavity via the omental (epiploic) foramen: it is subdivided into the omental vestibule, caudal omental recess, and splenic recess. Aims of this retrospective case series study were to describe the frequencies of CT findings of dogs with confirmed inflammatory or neoplastic disease of the omenta, omental bursa, or both. The sample included seven adult, medium-to-large breed dogs. All had fluid in the greater peritoneal cavity and 5/7 (71%) dogs also had fluid in the omental bursa. Primary suppurative inflammatory disease was present in three dogs, each dog had a large abscess with central gas in either the omental vestibule (two dogs) or caudal omental recess (one dog). Both abscesses in the omental vestibule arose from the papillary process of the caudate liver lobe and were surgically removed without complication. Neoplasia was present in four dogs and either arose from omentum (hemangiosarcoma, carcinoma) or infiltrated the omentum from an adjacent organ (splenic leiomyosarcoma, gastric adenocarcinoma). Neoplasms created mass-like tumors, infiltrative tumors, or both and had variable distribution (focal, multifocal, or locally extensive). All dogs with neoplasia were euthanized. CT signs of inflammatory and neoplastic disease overlapped, but the presence of gas might prioritize abscessation. CT signs helped decide feasibility of surgery based on extent of local invasion, especially involvement of structures passing through the porta hepatis.

Abstract
A 13-year-old castrated male Toy Poodle presented with an acute vestibular disorder. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography revealed a large oval space-occupying mass with skull destruction located from the subcutaneous tissue to the posterior fossa region. Histopathologically, the mass was a bundled growth of spindle-shaped mesenchymal tumor cells between the myofibrillar and collagen bundles. The cells were moderately irregular in size and had eosinophilic stained cytoplasm. The cells were highly atypical and had rare mitotic figures. Neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for S100, GFAP, Olig-2, SOX10 and immunonegative for NF, E-cadherin, and Claudin-1. Collective findings were presumptive with a diagnosis of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor.

Abstract
A 13-year-old intact Pomeranian bitch presented with a 2-month history of abdominal distension and anorexia. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a large tumor in the abdominal cavity without metastases. The tumor was surgically resected and histopathologically characterized by spindle-shaped to atypical-shaped neoplastic cells with basophilic stroma in the omental adipose tissue. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the neoplastic cells were positive for vimentin but negative for cytokeratin, S-100 protein, and α-SMA. The bitch was diagnosed as a myxosarcoma arising from the greater omentum. Postoperatively, metronomic chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide and piroxicam was initiated. The tumor recurred on postoperative day 49. Although the bitch died 102 days after the initial examination, her general condition was maintained until death.

Abstract
Case summary A 14-year-old male neutered domestic mediumhair cat presented with a 4 month
history of inappetence and weight loss. Pertinent abnormalities on
haematology and biochemistry included a mild microcytic regenerative anaemia
(packed cell volume [PCV] 24% [reference interval (RI) 30–45%], mean cell
volume 30.8 fl [RI 40–45 fl], absolute reticulocyte count 326.8 ×
1012) and increased alkaline phosphatase activity (76 IU/l;
RI <50 IU/l). Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan revealed masses in the
transverse colon (2.0 cm × 1.2 cm) and right medial liver lobe (5.0 cm
diameter). Thoracic radiographs were unremarkable. Right medial liver lobe
resection and colectomy were performed. Immunohistochemistry was positive
for S-100 protein, vimentin and glial fibrillary acidic protein, very weakly
positive for c-kit and negative for muscle-specific actin and CD18,
consistent with a colonic malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST)
with a hepatic metastasis. Postoperative treatment with metronomic
cyclophosphamide was well tolerated. Eighteen months postoperatively the cat
re-presented after 3 days of progressive lethargy and inappetence.
Haematology revealed a marked non- or pre-regenerative anaemia (PCV 10%).
Coagulation times were prolonged (prothrombin time 39 s [RI 15–22 s] and
activated partial thromboplastin time >300 s [RI 65–119 s]). Abdominal
ultrasound identified multiple renal and hepatic nodules. Euthanasia was
performed and post-mortem examination confirmed metastasis of the MPNST. Relevance and novel information This report describes the treatment of a metastatic colonic peripheral nerve
sheath tumour in a cat. Feline visceral MPNSTs are rare and little is known
about prognosis or optimal treatment.

Abstract
A neurofibroma of granular cell subtype is described in a 7-year-old horse. The horse had a 3-month history of ataxia affecting the forelimbs and hindlimbs, suggesting a C1-C6 neuroanatomical localization. Post-mortem examination revealed an intradural mass arising from the right sixth cervical spinal nerve and compressing the spinal cord. Histologically, the mass was composed largely of wavy spindle cells (a mixture of Schwann cells, perineurial cells and fibroblasts) intimately associated with ropy collagen fibres. Approximately 25% of the spindle cells were swollen and contained densely-packed, eosinophilic and periodic acid-Schiff-positive cytoplasmic granules. Immunohistochemistry for S100 and glial fibrillary acidic protein antigens labelled a proportion of neoplastic cells, while the cytoplasmic granules were positive for S100 and neuron specific enolase. This is the first report of a neurofibroma with granular cell differentiation in an animal. Granular cell differentiation in other peripheral nerve sheath tumours of animals is briefly discussed.

Abstract
Peripheral nerve sheath tumours (PNSTs) are neoplastic growths derived from Schwann cells, perineural cells or both. Malignant PNSTs (MPNSTs) are uncommon in domestic animals. This report describes the concomitant occurrence of PNSTs in a 10-year-old female cocker spaniel with a clinical history of respiratory impairment. Grossly, there was a large infiltrative mass in the caudal lobe of the right lung; smaller nodules were observed in the other lobes of the right lung. Furthermore, a small encapsulated cutaneous nodule was observed on the left hindlimb. Histopathology of the pulmonary tumours revealed the proliferation of pleomorphic spindle-shaped cells with moderate mitotic index arranged in interwoven bundles and concentric Antoni A and Antoni B patterns; invasion of the adjacent pulmonary tissue was observed. The cutaneous nodule consisted of neoplastic mesenchymal cells in interwoven bundles with concentric whorls, but without the marked anisokaryosis, binucleation and infiltrative growth seen in the pulmonary tumour. Immunohistochemistry revealed that both tumours were immunoreactive for vimentin, glial fibrillary acidic protein and S100 protein, but were negative for factor VIII. These findings are indicative of a MPNST in the lung with a concomitant benign PNST in the limb. This case represents the first report of a primary MPNST in the lung of a dog. This neoplastic growth should be included in the differential diagnosis of primary malignant pulmonary tumours of dogs.

Abstract
Canine malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) occur not only in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) but also in soft tissue and various organs (non-PNS). The most important diagnostic criterion is proof of peripheral nerve sheath origin. This is difficult in non-PNS MPNSTs, and its differential diagnosis is challenging. Canine perivascular wall tumors (PWTs) also commonly arise in soft tissue. Their histopathological features are quite similar to those of canine MPNSTs, making their differential diagnosis challenging. To elucidate whether the morphological features are applicable to diagnose non-PNS MPNSTs and to demonstrate useful markers for distinction between canine MPNSTs and PWTs, the authors examined 30 canine MPNSTs and 31 PWTs immunohistochemically for S100, nestin, NGFR, Olig2, claudin-1, CD57, PRX, α-SMA, desmin, and calponin. Among canine MPNSTs, the PNS tumors displayed significantly higher S100 and Olig2 expression than the non-PNS tumors. The expression levels of the other markers did not differ significantly, suggesting that the same morphological diagnostic criteria are applicable regardless of their location. The PWT cells displayed significantly weaker immunoreactivity than MPNSTs to markers used except α-SMA and desmin. Cluster analysis sorted most canine MPNSTs and PWTs into 2 distinctly different clusters, whereas 3 MPNSTs and 6 PWTs were assigned to the opposing cluster. These 3 MPNSTs were negative for almost all markers, while these 6 PWTs were positive for only neuronal markers. In particular, NGFR and Olig2 were almost negative in the rest of PWT cases. These findings suggest that NGFR and Olig2 are useful to distinguish these 2 tumors.
