Abstract
Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is extremely rare in humans and animals, especially in
rodents. This is the first case report on spontaneous extraskeletal osteosarcoma in the
neck skeletal muscle of a Crlj:CD1 (ICR) mouse (36 weeks, dead). Necropsy revealed a solid
white mass located in the neck skeletal muscle (scalenus muscle). Histological examination
showed that the tumor consisted of atypical polygonal cells, a small osteoid clump, and
bone tissue. Mitotic figures were observed. Serial sections showed that neoplastic cells
lacked clear invasive proliferation to adjacent normal skeletal muscle and continuity with
normal bone tissue. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the neoplastic cells were
positive for osteocalcin, osterix, vimentin, and S-100. Based on these results, the tumor
was diagnosed as extraskeletal osteosarcoma in the neck skeletal muscle.

Abstract
Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a very rare tumor in humans and animals. This paper describes a case of extraskeletal osteosarcoma observed in the duodenum of a male ICR mouse. Grossly, a solid mass pushing up the tunica serosa was observed in the duodenal wall. Histologically, the tumor was located in the lamina propria mucosae and tela mucosa. Neoplastic cells densely proliferated in these areas, and replaced of the normal tissue components. A small amount of osteoid and a small clump of bone tissue were observed in the area of neoplastic cell proliferation, especially in the lamina propria mucosae. Neoplastic cells consisted of atypical polygonal cells and pleomorphic spindle-shaped cells, and the former were predominant. Mitotic figures were occasionally observed. Neither invasion of vessels in the duodenum nor metastasis to distant organs was observed. There were no skeletal tumors in the body. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive for anti-osteocalcin, osteonectin, vimentin, and S-100 protein. Judging from these results, the present tumor was diagnosed as extraskeletal osteosarcoma. This is the first report of spontaneous extraskeletal osteosarcoma arising from the duodenum of a mouse.

Abstract
The INHAND (International Harmonization of Nomenclature and Diagnostic Criteria for Lesions in Rats and Mice) Project (www.toxpath.org/inhand.asp) is an initiative of the Societies of Toxicological Pathology from Europe (ESTP), Great Britain (BSTP), Japan (JSTP) and North America (STP) to develop an internationally accepted nomenclature for proliferative and nonproliferative lesions in laboratory animals. The purpose of this publication is to provide a standardized nomenclature for classifying microscopic lesions observed in the skeletal tissues and teeth of laboratory rats and mice, with color photomicrographs illustrating examples of many common lesions. The standardized nomenclature presented in this document is also available on the internet (http://www.goreni.org/). Sources of material were databases from government, academic and industrial laboratories throughout the world.

Abstract
A subcutaneous mass in the right femoral region of a female F344 Slc/N rat was examined
histopathologically. At 83 weeks of age, the animal showed symptoms of severe anemia and
nasal bleeding. Necropsy revealed that the mass had invaded the skeletal muscles but did
not affect the bones. Multicentric nodules were also observed in the lung. Histopathology
revealed a sheet-like growth pattern of polygonal tumor cells with round or comma-shaped
nuclei and pale eosinophilic cytoplasm. Osteoid tissue was observed in not only the
original lesion but also the metastatic foci in the lung. Each tumor cell was surrounded
by argentophil fibers and few collagen fibers. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were
positive for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), vimentin, osterix and osteocalcin,
but negative for keratin, S-100, von Willebrand factor, CD-31, CD-34, desmin, α-smooth
muscle actin, lysozyme, α1-antitrypsin and rat malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH)
antigen. CD-68-positive cells were considered to be infiltrated macrophages because they
were negative for PCNA. On the basis of these findings, we diagnosed the present case as
extraskeletal osteosarcoma.

Abstract
Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a very rare tumor in humans and animals including
rats. This paper describes a case of extraskeletal osteosarcoma observed in the
glandular stomach of an aged female Fischer 344 rat. Grossly, a whitish solid
mass was observed at the greater curvature of the glandular stomach.
Histologically, the tumor consisted of both atypical polygonal and pleomorphic
spindle-shaped cells, with pleomorphic nuclei, and it contained variable amounts
of osteoids and small clumps of mature bone tissue. In addition, mitotic figures
were frequently observed. Neither invasion of the muscle layer or vessels in the
stomach nor metastasis to distant organs was detected. There were no skeletal
tumors in the body. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for
osteocalcin, osteonectin, vimentin and S-100 protein. Judging from these
results, the present tumor was diagnosed as extraskeletal osteosarcoma. This is
the first report of spontaneous extraskeletal osteosarcoma arising from the
stomach in a rat.

Abstract
Extraskeletal osteosarcoma, arising spontaneously from the subcutis of the left abdomen and having a cystic appearance, was found in an untreated male Sprague-Dawley rat during a carcinogenicity study. At 76 weeks of age, the tumor mass had grown to 50 x 110 x 140 mm, and the animal exhibited severe anemia related to the complication of ulceration with hemorrhage. The tumor displayed irregular ossification at the walls of a cyst-like space filled with much yellowish fluid and necrotic cellular debris. Histopathologically, the tumor consisted of sheets of large, plump osteoblast-like cells, which produced broad irregular trabeculae of osteoid and calcified osseous tissue. Since extraskeletal osteosarcoma with a cystic appearance, has not been reported in animals, except for the telangiectatic type, our case shows an extremely rare type.

Abstract
Spontaneous subcutaneous extraskeletal osteosarcoma was diagnosed in the subcutaneous tissue of two Djungarian hamsters. Histologically, the tumour was characterized by multiple nests of osseous and cartilaginous components within a proliferation of pleomorphic cells. No abnormality was observed in any skeletal bones and no change suggesting tumorous growth was observed in any other sites. This is the first report of extraskeletal osteosarcomas in Djungarian hamsters.

Abstract
The histopathological appearance of malignant mesotheliomas with osseous and cartilaginous differentiation is described in detail. Bone and cartilage occurred in mixed and sarcomatoid mesotheliomas which were induced by intraperitoneal injection of various types of asbestos fibres (asbestos cement, crocidolite, UICC-amosite, UICC-chrysotile B, Calidria-chrysotile). Bone or cartilage were found in 32.7% of mixed mesothelioma and in 12.8% of sarcomatoid mesotheliomas.
