Association between depressive mood and chronic periodontitis among senior residents using the National Health Insurance Service-Senior Cohort Database

BACKGROUND

Bacteria involved in chronic periodontal disease induce inflammatory cytokines. These cytokines can enter the brain through systemic circulation and cause depression. In this study, we investigated the association between depressed mood and chronic periodontitis in older adults in Korea.

METHODS

This study used data from the Life-changing Period Health Checkup (2007-2008), performed only at 66 years of age, which is available from the National Health Insurance Service-Senior Cohort Database. The depressed mood status was evaluated by three questions in the mental health examination. The definition of chronic periodontitis was determined based on the diagnosis and treatment codes for chronic periodontitis. Based on the three questions, we investigated the association between depressive mood and chronic periodontal disease by dividing the study population into 9622 depressed mood subjects (DMS) and 9091 non-depressed mood subjects (NDMS). Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analysis was performed, and odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were presented.

RESULTS

Among the NDMS, 5390 patients with chronic periodontitis were identified, and among the DMS, 5964 patients with chronic periodontitis were identified. The crude OR (95% CI) for chronic periodontitis in DMS compared to NDMS was 1.12 (1.06-1.19). The adjusted OR (95% CI) for chronic periodontitis was 1.12 (1.06-1.19). As a result of confirming the effect of sex and comorbidity on the association between depressed mood and chronic periodontitis, a significant association was observed for women at 1.15 (1.07-1.25). In addition, the adjusted OR (95% CI) for depressive mood and chronic periodontitis was 1.15 (1.07-1.25) for patients with hypertension, 1.13 (1.03-1.25) for patients with diabetes, 1.12 (1.02-1.22) for patients with dyslipidemia, and 1.18 (1.04-1.34) for patients with heart disease.

CONCLUSIONS

This study confirmed the relationship between depressed mood and chronic periodontitis in older adults. Therefore, education to strengthen the emotional management of older adults, especially with respect to depression, would play an auxiliary role in preventing and treating periodontitis.

Correlation between Leisure Activity Time and Life Satisfaction: Based on KOSTAT Time Use Survey Data

RATIONALE

This study aims to investigate the correlation between the available leisure activity time and life satisfaction of the healthy elderly and the factors affecting them.

METHOD

For the analysis, data from the 2014 Time Use Survey (2014TUS) published by Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) was used. This study classified the detailed activities of 9228 subjects, based on the data in 2014TUS, and analyzed the differences in time use for occupation domains by age group.

RESULTS

It was found that a greater amount time used for outdoor leisure activities yielded a higher life satisfaction value. Differences were found in time use by occupation domains between younger and older groups. These showed higher life satisfaction for those with spouses, regular full-time jobs, higher education, and better health.

CONCLUSION

Based on these results, in order to improve the quality of life (QoL) for older adults, it is necessary to develop various leisure programs that require dynamic physical activities and to prepare alternative policies at the national level to promote participation in leisure activities by older adults. This study will provide occupational therapists (OTs) with data they can use to help older adults who have difficulty in time usage through time management intervention to improve their life satisfaction and QoL.

Factors affecting aging cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults

AIM

The study purpose was to determine factors affecting aging cognitive function of 3,645 community-dwelling older adults in Korea.

METHODS

The Hasegawa Dementia Scale assessed aging cognitive function, blood analyses and anthropometrics assessed cardio-metabolic risk factors, and the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form Korean Version assessed depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

Participants with poor aging cognitive function were more likely to be in the late age group (≥75 y) and currently smoking and have a medical history of stroke, high body mass index, and high level of depressive symptoms; they were also less likely to engage in regular meals and physical activities.

CONCLUSION

Regular meals and physical activities may be primary factors for clinical assessment to identify older adults at risk for aging cognitive function. With aging, depressive symptoms and other unhealthy lifestyle behaviours should be managed to prevent cognitive function disorders.

Impact of social capital on depression trajectories of older women in Korea

OBJECTIVES

This study examines the impact of social capital on depressive symptoms trajectories among Korean women aged 65 years or older. It also examines the difference in depressive symptoms and social capital by economic status (poverty group, non-poverty group) among community-dwelling older women in Korea.

METHOD

This study used 2435 older women of the Korean Welfare Panel Study from 2006 (wave 1) to 2013 (wave 8) data using latent growth modeling. Social capital variables were cognitive (interpersonal trust, reciprocity) and structural (the size of family, the number of friends or neighbors, participation in leisure and volunteer activities).

RESULTS

The results showed both intra- and inter-individual variability in depressive symptoms over time. Interpersonal trust and reciprocity as cognitive social capital had an effect on the change of depressive symptoms in intercept and slope. The size of family, participation in leisure activities among structural social capital were associated with lower levels of depressive symptoms in intercept and slope.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study suggest some practical implications for depression intervention and prevention and further research on late-life depression.
