The Interpersonal Competence Instrument for Nurses

A new tool, the Interpersonal Competence Instrument for Nurses, was evaluated for content validity and readability. Evaluators consisted of a panel of 10 nursing experts. The instrument measures four categories of the patient-nurse interaction: translating, getting to know you, establishing trust, and going the extra mile. The content validity indexes (CVI) for 14 of 15 behaviors within the four categories rangedfrom .8 to 1.0 and are considered to have content validity. The CVIfor the 15th behavior, clicking, was calculated as. 7, and, thus, was modified. The CVIfor the entire instrument of 111 items was determined to be .84. Readability analyzed with the SMOGformula established a grade level of 8.09. Additional psychometric testing of the tool is in progress. Internal consistency reliability is being evaluated through the use of coefficient alpha and item analysis. Construct validity is being estimated through the experimental approach. The internal structure of the instrument is being assessed throughfactor analysis. Presuming that this instrument continues to demonstrate validity and reliability with future testing, it will facilitate the evaluation of nurse-patient interaction and promote focused education for nurses in the career development continuum.

Does Patient Satisfaction Contribute to Nursing Care Quality?

The use of patient satisfaction tools is routine in healthcare facilities. What actually do the results of patient satisfaction surveys tell us about the quality of nursing care? The purpose of this article is to provide a discussion about patient satisfaction and nursing care. Recommendations are offered about how patient satisfaction may be used to improve nursing care and what changes may be needed to achieve a high level of patient satisfaction.

Evaluating consumer satisfaction in residential continuing care settings

The outcome of the project reported on here is a client-centered consumer satisfaction questionnaire designed to evaluate new models of residential continuing care in Alberta, Canada. Satisfaction is defined as a multi-dimensional construct that is grounded in the consumer's experience. Consultation with the clients of the services during development of the instrument ensured that characteristics important to the clients were assessed. The result is an instrument with which to measure satisfaction that is fully client-centered and that, with appropriate modifications, can be used to monitor any client-centered program for cognitively-able continuing care clients.

Patients' and nurses' perceptions of the quality of nursing care in Kuwait

Using an exploratory research method and a purposive sample of 259 subjects (109 of whom were nurses and 148 patients), data were collected using an instrument consisting of the elements of the nursing process. Four hypotheses were tested, using the analysis of covariance and the t-test The result of hypothesis I showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the perception of the quality of nursing care between the patients in the medical and surgical units of the five study hospitals. Hypothesis 2 indicated that there was no significant difference between nurses in the medical-surgical units in the areas of assessment, planning and implementation. However, a significant difference was found for accountability and responsibility. Further analysis using a t-test showed a significant difference between nurses in the medical and surgical units in the areas of accountability and responsibility. The data for hypothesis 3 and 4 yielded no significant difference in the perceptions of quality care by nurses according to work experience and by patients in all hospitals regardless of the patients' age and sex.
