Abstract
BACKGROUND The global facial mask market grows steadily at 8.5 % annually. However, prolonged use may lead to skin inflammation. OBJECTIVE To investigate how various mask types and wearing durations impact skin physiology and aquaporins3 (AQP3) expression in healthy subjects. METHODS We used a randomized controlled design to investigate the effects of three types of facial masks (pure water, hyaluronan, and bifida ferment lysate) and four different duration(5, 15, 25, and 40 min) on various skin parameters in volunteers, assessing moisture content, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), sebum, corneocyte size, and AQP3 expression before and after mask application, while also evaluating adverse reactions, discomfort, and noncompliance. RESULT Hydration and TEWL increased at first, then decreased. Sebum increased with all types of masks, particularly after 40 min. Vasodilation and AQP3 expression were linked to mask duration. Corneocyte sizes remained constant. The main adverse reactions were redness (10.71 %, n = 28) and dryness (57.14 %, n = 28), especially with pure water masks lasting over 25 min. CONCLUSION Short-term use of facial sheet masks (<25 min) benefits skin with improved hydration, reduced redness, and AQP3 activation, while prolonged use can lead to increased dryness and redness.

Abstract
Mask-wearing behavior, common in the post-COVID-19 era, raises concerns for sensitive skin. This split-face study investigated mask-related changes in skin barrier function and microbiome composition among 30 female volunteers with sensitive skin and assessed the mitigating effects of a moisturizer containing biological lipids and probiotics. Skin physiological indicators (transepidermal water loss, erythema index, stratum corneum hydration, pH, temperature) of masked and unmasked areas were collected at baseline, after three hours of mask-wearing, post-tape stripping, and after 24 h, respectively. Microbiome samples collected from the masked areas before and after wearing a medical mask were analyzed with bioinformatics methods. Mask-wearing significantly weakened barrier function in both masked and adjacent unmasked areas, while reducing bacterial diversity. It was also associated with an increase in Cutibacterium (P = 0.110) and decreases in Streptococcus (P = 0.032) and Prevotella (P = 0.026) abundance. Moisturizer application prior to mask-wearing significantly reduced transepidermal water loss and erythema (both P < 0.001) and further improved erythema after 24 h (P = 0.048). These findings demonstrate that mask-wearing can disrupt the skin barrier and microbiome in individuals with sensitive skin and applying a moisturizer beforehand can mitigate mask-related discomforts by aiding barrier repair and reducing sensitivity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Moisture-associated skin damage (MASD) is an inflammatory skin condition caused by long-term exposure to a moist environment, which can compromise the integrity of the barrier and increase pain. This scoping review aimed to systematically analyze the research status of prevention and care for MASD. METHODS We conducted a scoping review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched for relevant articles until March 2023. RESULTS Based on eligibility criteria, 34 research studies and review articles were included. The prevalence of MASD varies greatly in different medical environments and patient groups. The high-risk factors included prolonged exposure to excessive water, chemical irritation such as urine or feces, mechanical factors such as friction or improper removal of medical adhesives and local bacterial colonization. Prevention measures mainly include avoiding skin exposure to moisture, skin cleansing, moisturizing and the treatment of secondary bacterial infection. CONCLUSION A variety of factors have an impact on MASD. Nurses should select suitable tools to screen high-risk patients and take targeted preventive measures according to the related types of skin injury to reduce the incidence of MASD.

Abstract
Background Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis is a serious skin injury causing suffering, secondary infection, and inducing almost six times more pressure sore than normal skin patients. This moisture and chemical skin irritation is a concern, especially for intensive care unit nurses. This study aimed to review the effective nursing strategy for preventing and caring for incontinence-associated dermatitis in older intensive care unit patients and pilot its feasibility. Methods The five databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHL Complete, WanFang, and CNKI, were searched, and articles were screened and extracted. The strategies and details of prevention and care for incontinence-associated dermatitis were reviewed and summarized. Finally, selected strategies were applied to five intensive care unit patients with various health conditions and levels of Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis severity. Results The literature review found that there is a standardized nursing process for incontinence-associated dermatitis. The prevention and care strategies for incontinence-associated dermatitis include assessment, risk factor management, skin cleaning, skin protection, and health education and training. In actual clinical application, personalized nursing measures can positively impact patients. Five case studies from our pilot confirmed this finding. Conclusion Personalized nursing measures can positively impact patients in actual clinical applications. Our five case studies implementing the strategies from the review confirmed this finding. In clinical work, it is recommended to develop personalized nursing programs for specific risk factors of older intensive care unit patients. Protocol Registration TCTR20230808004.

Abstract
Macromolecules are large, complex molecules composed of smaller subunits known as monomers. The four primary categories of macromolecules found in living organisms are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids; they also encompass a broad range of natural and synthetic polymers. Recent studies have shown that biologically active macromolecules can help regenerate hair, providing a potential solution for current hair regeneration therapies. This review examines the latest developments in the use of macromolecules for the treatment of hair loss. The fundamental principles of hair follicle (HF) morphogenesis, hair shaft (HS) development, hair cycle regulation, and alopecia have been introduced. Microneedle (MN) and nanoparticle (NP) delivery systems are innovative treatments for hair loss. Additionally, the application of macromolecule-based tissue-engineered scaffolds for the in vitro and in vivo neogenesis of HFs is discussed. Furthermore, a new research direction is explored wherein artificial skin platforms are adopted as a promising screening method for hair loss treatment drugs. Through these multifaceted approaches, promising aspects of macromolecules for future hair loss treatments are identified.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prolonged face mask usage, a daily practice for the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, creates high levels of humidity underneath the mask, which may cause unexpected skin concerns. OBJECTIVE To investigate the impact of repeated mask usage on the face by comparing skin properties inside and outside of the mask-covered areas. METHODS A double-blinded, randomized, split-face clinical study was conducted with 21 healthy female participants who wore face masks at least 6 h every day for 1 week, with one side of their face treated with a moisturizer three times daily. On day 8, after 5 h of wearing the mask, skin properties (sebum, hydration, and trans-epidermal water loss [TEWL]) were evaluated at 15, 60, and 120 min post-mask removal, followed by barrier disruption and recovery assessment. RESULTS Mask usage weakened stratum corneum (SC) on facial skin compared to uncovered areas, including reduced SC hydration (p < 0.02 at 15 min) and increased TEWL in response to tape stripping challenge (p < 0.03 after stripping). In addition, sebum production also increased after mask removal (p < 0.01 at 15 min). Notably, a daily moisturizer mitigated these effects by increasing SC hydration (p < 0.001) and improving SC resilience against barrier disruption. CONCLUSION Daily prolonged usage of a facial mask, essential due to the COVID-19 situation, generated a high-humidity microenvironment and led to compromised SC, which was revealed by a barrier challenge technique. Moreover, proper facial moisturization may help to maintain skin homeostasis and prevent the barrier impairment caused by repeated mask usage.

Abstract
Purpose This prospective, single-center, open-label, therapeutic confirmatory, randomized clinical trial aimed to assess the alleviation of anal pain by applying structured anal skin care including skin protectants in rectal cancer patients with low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) combined with anal pain. Methods From December 2017 to May 2020, 42 patients with LARS (scores of ≥21) and anal pain (visual analogue scale [VAS] score of ≥3) were randomly assigned and observed for 4 weeks. The conventional treatment consisted of dietary management, sitz baths, prohibition of anal scrubbing, loperamide, and dioctahedral smectite. In the anal care group, cleanser, barrier cream, and barrier spray were applied to the anal skin after defecation following the conventional treatment. The primary outcome was analgesic effect on anal pain after 2 weeks of structured treatment (anal care group) or conventional (control group). The cutoff for analgesic effect was a decrease in the anal pain score (VAS score of ≥2 or ≥30% reduction). Results As a primary outcome, the analgesic effect was significantly higher in the anal care group (P = 0.034). The incontinence-associated dermatitis skin condition score was significantly improved in the anal care group than control group after 4 weeks (P = 0.023). There were no significant differences in LARS scores and quality of life scores between 2 groups. Conclusion Structured anal skin care has a significant analgesic effect in reducing anal pain and improving anal skin conditions in patients with LARS after rectal cancer surgery.

Abstract
A 59-year-old male patient presented with abdominal necrotising fasciitis secondary to a bowel perforation through a previous drain site that he had waited at home with for two weeks. Enteric contents were found within the abdominal wall. Surgery required extensive abdominal wall debridement and the formation of a double-barrel ileostomy within the debrided area. The resulting abdominal wound was large, initially covering an area of approximately 424cm2, and had continuous contamination from enteric leakage that could not be isolated. Achieving wound healing was challenging due to the enteric output and resultant continuous contamination of the wound bed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peristomal skin complications (PSCs) are frequently reported postoperative complications. PSCs can present visibly or as symptoms such as pain, itching or burning sensations. AIM To develop a new tool that can capture a range of sensation symptoms together with visible complications and an objective assessment of discolouration in the peristomal area. METHOD Consensus from qualitative interviews with health professionals and people with an ostomy, and input from expert panels, formed the basis of a patient-reported outcome (PRO) questionnaire. A decision tree model was used to define a combined score including PRO and objectively assessed discolouration area. FINDINGS Six elements were included in the PRO questionnaire and four health states representing different severity levels of the peristomal skin were defined. CONCLUSION The Ostomy Skin Tool 2.0 is a sensitive tool that can be used to follow changes in the peristomal skin on a regular basis and thereby help prevent severe PSCs.

Abstract
Background The prevalent rate of incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) trends upward in older populations. Skin breakdown from IAD impacts the quality of life of older adults and reflects the quality of care in hospitals and long-term care facilities. Specific and appropriate interventions for prevention and care are needed. This systematic review aims to review optimal strategies for prevention and care for older adults with IAD. Methods PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Medline, ProQuest, ThaiLIS, ThaiJo, and E-Thesis were searched for articles published between January 2010 and December 2020. Only articles focusing on older adults were included for the review. Results Eleven articles met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Interventions for the prevention and care of IAD among older adults were categorized as assessment, incontinence management/causative factors management, cleansing, application of medical products for both skin moisturizing and skin barrier, body positioning, nutrition promotion, health education and training, and outcome evaluation. Specific prevention and care strategies for older adults with IAD included using specific assessment tools, applying skin cleansing pH from 4.0 to 6.8, body positioning, and promoting food with high protein. Other strategies were similar to those reported for adult patients. Conclusion The systematic review extracted current and specific prevention and care strategies for IAD in older adults. The prevention and care strategies from this systematic review should be applied in clinical practice. However, more rigorous research methodology is recommended in future studies, especially in examining intervention outcomes. Nurses and other health professionals should be educated and trained to understand the causes of IAD in older adults and the specific prevention and care strategies for this population. Because older adults are prone to skin damage, and this type of skin breakdown differs from pressure ulcers, the tools for assessment and evaluation, and the strategies for prevention and care require special attention. Abstract
BACKGROUND Peristomal skin complications (PSCs) impair life for people with an ostomy. Visual signs of PSCs include discolouration, but sensation symptoms like pain, itching, and burning are equally important and underreported. AIM To provide improved understanding of PSC prevalence and associated challenges in the communities of ostomy patients and ostomy care nurses. METHODS The Ostomy Life Study 2019 encompassed a patient survey (completed by 5187 people with an ostomy) and a nurse survey (completed by 328 ostomy care nurses). FINDINGS In total, 88% of patients experienced PSCs and 75% experienced PSC symptoms in the absence of discolouration. Eighty per cent of nurses considered ostomy-related issues to be the main reason for PSCs, and a correlation between PSC severity and number of nurse consultations was demonstrated. CONCLUSION This study revealed a remarkably high PSC incidence in the absence of discolouration and highlighted direct consequences of having compromised skin and the health-economic consequences.

Abstract
COVID-19 has infected millions of patients and impacted healthcare workers worldwide. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a key component of protecting frontline clinicians against infection. The benefits of PPE far outweigh the risks, nonetheless, many clinicians are exhibiting skin injury caused by PPE worn incorrectly. These skin injuries, ranging from lesions to open wounds are concerning because they increase the susceptibility of viral infection and transmission to other individuals. Early into the COVID-19 pandemic (April 2020), the U. S. National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP) developed a series of position statements to improve wear-ability of PPE and protect healthcare professionals and their patients as safe from harm as possible under the circumstances. The NPIAP positions, which were formed by conducting a systematic review of what was known at the time, include: (a) Prepare skin before and after wearing PPE with skin sealants, barrier creams and moisturisers; (b) Frequent PPE offloading to relieve pressure and shear applied to skin; (c) treat visible skin injuries immediately caused by PPE to minimise future infection; (d) non-porous dressings may provide additional skin protection, but lack evidence; (e) health systems should take care to educate clinicians about placement and personal hygiene related to handling PPE. Throughout all of these practices, handwashing remains a top priority to handle PPE. These NPIAP positions provided early guidance to reduce the risk of skin injury caused by PPE based on available research regarding PPE injuries, a cautious application of evidence-based recommendations on prevention of device-related pressure injuries in patients and the expert opinion of the NPIAP Board of Directors. Clinicians who adhere to these recommendations reduce the prospects of skin damage and long-term effects (e.g. scarring). These simple steps to minimise the risk of skin injury and reduce the risk of coronavirus infection from PPE can help.
