Comparison of Osseointegration of Dental Implants Placed in Rabbit Tibia Using Two Dental Laser and Implant Handpiece Systems

The present study aimed to confirm the usefulness of a multi-laser handpiece system currently under development. Implants were placed in the tibia of rabbits using a conventional separate laser-implant handpiece system (control group; SurgicPro+; NSK, Kanuma, Japan and Epic 10; Biolase, Irvine, CA, USA) and a multi-laser handpiece system (experimental group; BLP 10; Saeshin, Daegu, Korea). Implants were placed in left and right tibias of five rabbits using a conventional laser-implant handpiece system and a multi-laser handpiece system (N = 5 per group). Subsequently, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT; bone-to-implant contact evaluation), implant stability quotient (ISQ) measurement, and histological evaluations were performed to confirm the implant placement results. The independent t-test and the paired t-test were used to compare the ISQ values and the results of the two implant-laser handpiece groups (α = 0.05), respectively. No statistically significant difference in micro-CT, ISQ, and histological evaluations was observed between implant placement by the two systems (p > 0.05) except implant initial stability. The use of the multi-laser handpiece system is expected to produce the same results as a conventional separate laser-implant handpiece system with the higher implant initial stability. Additionally, it will potentially make the clinical environment more pleasant and will provide convenience for the clinicians.

Laser and radiosurgery in veterinary dentistry

Lasers and radiosurgery frequently used in human dentistry are rapidly entering veterinary dental use. The carbon dioxide, diode, and low-level therapy lasers have features including hemostasis control, access to difficult to reach areas, and decreased pain, that make them useful for oral surgery. Periodontal pocket surgery, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, gingival hyperplasia, operculectomy, tongue surgery, oropharyngeal inflammation therapy, oral mass surgery, crown, and frenectomy laser surgeries are described, including images.

The evolution of transcranial laser therapy for acute ischemic stroke, including a pooled analysis of NEST-1 and NEST-2

Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator is the only proven therapy for acute ischemic stroke. Not enough patients are eligible for treatment and additional new therapies are needed. Recently, laser technology has been applied to acute ischemic stroke. This noninvasive technique uses near-infrared wavelengths applied to the scalp within 24 h of symptom onset. The mechanism is incompletely understood but may involve increased mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate production. Animal models demonstrated safety and efficacy warranting randomized controlled trials in humans. NEST-1 (phase 2) and NEST-2 (phase 3) confirmed the safety of transcranial laser therapy, although efficacy was not found in NEST-2. Pooled analysis of NEST-1 and NEST-2 revealed a significantly improved success rate in patients treated with laser therapy. Further phase 3 testing is planned and may create a new paradigm for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke.

Drug-induced gingival enlargement: biofilm control and surgical therapy with gallium-aluminum-arsenide (GaAlAs) diode laser-A 2-year follow-up

Drug-induced gingival enlargement has been reported in patients treated with various types of anticonvulsant drugs, and is generally associated with the presence of plaque, gingival inflammation, and a genetic predisposition. Effective treatment includes daily oral hygiene and periodic professional prophylaxis. However, in some patients, surgical removal of the gingival tissue overgrowth becomes necessary. The patient in this case report was mentally impaired and had severe drug-induced gingival enlargement. This report describes the initial protocol, the gingivectomy, and a 2-year follow-up. A diode laser was used as an effective and safe method to remove the patient's overgrown gingival tissue.

The management of drug-induced gingival overgrowth

OBJECTIVES

This review critically evaluates the different therapies that are available to manage drug-induced overgrowth (DIGO).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

This review is based on literature identified using the online databases MEDLINE and PUB MED. It is not a systematic review, but a conventional review of the relevant literature.

RESULTS

Patients benefit from a non-surgical approach if this can be delivered before commencement of medication although in many instances this may not be practicable. Systemic antibiotic usage has been evaluated in the management of ciclosporin-induced gingival overgrowth. Efficacy appears to be equivocal and long-term use is undesirable. Surgical excision remains the main treatment option especially for patients with severe overgrowth. Few studies have compared different techniques with respect to recurrence rate or post-operative sequelae.

CONCLUSION

DIGO is a common clinical problem that often requires intervention. Non-surgical techniques can limit the occurrence of this unwanted affect, reduce the extent of plaque-induced gingival inflammation and reduce the rate of recurrence. Wherever possible this management strategy should be adopted first. Surgical treatment is often the most reliable option and scalpel gingivectomy remains the treatment of choice. Further investigations are required to develop appropriate management strategies to prevent recurrence of DIGO.
