Potential influences of religiosity and religious coping strategies on people with diabetes

Fatigue among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: The Impact of Spirituality and Illness Perceptions

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) can cause fatigue, negatively affecting the daily functioning and health of individuals. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of spirituality and illness perceptions on fatigue among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. In this cross-sectional, descriptive study, 100 patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus completed the Fatigue Assessment Scale, the FACIT Sp-12 scale, and the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised assessing fatigue, spirituality, and illness perceptions, respectively. The mean age of the sample was 52.18 ± 15.53 years and 65% were insulin-treated patients. The mean score for the FACIT Sp-12 scale was 31.86 ± 7.7, for the FAS 27.0 ± 7.63, and for the Consequences and Emotional Representations of IPQ-R 25.5 ± 5.3. Statistically negative significant correlations were observed between the FACIT Sp-12 total score and the FAS subscales (r = -0.44 to -0.48, p < 0.01) and positive correlations between the "IP-Consequences and Emotional Representations" subscales and FAS scores. The total score of the FACIT Sp-12 (β = -0.35) was a negative predictor while Consequences and Emotional Representations (β = 0.28) were positive predictors of the total FAS Score. Participants scored moderate levels of total fatigue. Spirituality and positive illness perceptions may have a protective effect on the fatigue of patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Effect of a religious coping intervention of rational emotive behavior therapy on mental health of adult learners with type II diabetes

BACKGROUND

Some previous studies have highlighted the high rate of mental health problems associated with type II diabetes (T2DM). The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a religious coping intervention of rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) on the mental health of adult learners with T2DM.

METHODS

This study utilized a randomized controlled trial to select 146 adult learners with T2DM and mental health-related problems. The treatment group was made up of 73 adult learners, while the control group was also made up of 73 adult learners. The experimental group received 8 sessions of a religious coping intervention of REBT, while the control group received usual care. Data were collected using the patient health questionnaire, Warwick-Edinburgh mental well-being scale, and Kessler psychological distress scale. Repeated ANOVA and univariate analysis of covariance were used for data analyses.

RESULTS

The religious coping intervention of REBT substantially enhanced the mental health of adult learners with T2DM as measured by Warwick-Edinburgh mental well-being scale (P < .000) and patient health questionnaire (P < .000). The religious coping intervention of REBT significantly alleviated the psychological distress of adult learners with T2DM as measured by Kessler psychological distress scale (P < .000).

CONCLUSION

In this study, it has been demonstrated that a religious coping intervention of REBT effectively improves the mental health of adult learners with T2DM. The study concludes that the religious coping intervention of REBT is a practical alternative medicine approach to enhancing the mental health of adult learners with T2DM.

Intervention for depression among undergraduate religious education students: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

This research was designed to investigate the management of depression among undergraduate religious education students and identify the research implications for school-based religious intervention.

METHODS

This research is a randomized controlled trial. The treatment condition had 34 undergraduate religious education students but 33 undergraduate religious education students were in the control condition. The treatment process involved a 12-week application of religious rational emotive behavior therapy (RREBT). With Beck's depression inventory, version 2 (BDI-II), data collection was made possible.

RESULTS

Compared to students in the control condition, undergraduate religious education students in the treatment condition demonstrated a significant drop in mean BDI-II scores at post-test (F [1, 65] = 592.043, P < .05, η2p = .90). The effect of RREBT among students in the treatment condition stayed consistent at 2 weeks follow-up (F [1, 65] = 786.396, P < .05, η2p = .92, ΔR2 = .922).

CONCLUSION

The effect of RREBT on depression treatment among undergraduate religious education students was positive and can be consistent. The study results underscore the importance of expanding this treatment approach for these undergraduate education students in Nigeria.

Assessment of stress management coaching among Nigerian pre-service history teachers: A randomized controlled study

BACKGROUND

Studies have found that pre-service teachers commonly face stressful circumstances that prevent them from completing their academic tasks effectively. In terms of psychological factors and interventions, pre-service history teachers in Nigeria are the least studied group. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of stress management coaching among Nigerian pre-service history teachers.

METHODS

The research participants consisted of a randomized sample of 109 pre-service history teachers from Nigerian public higher education institutions (55 pre-service history teachers composed the stress management coaching group while 54 pre-service history teachers composed the waitlist control group). The stress management coaching for the pre-service history teachers was guided by a coaching manual created using the theoretical framework of rational emotive behavior coaching.

RESULTS

Pre-service history teachers who participated in stress management coaching showed significantly reduced stress levels at the post-test and follow-up. There was an interaction effect between group and time on the stress of pre-service history teachers.

CONCLUSION

The study suggests that pre-service history teachers can benefit from a stress management coaching intervention that uses the rational emotive behavior coaching approach. The development of this form of stress management coaching program on a large scale among pre-service history teachers could prove beneficial to their academic and personal success. Studies may be conducted in the future to examine the stress of history teachers in colleges and the efficacy of stress management coaching.
