Abstract
The key papers on estimating the uncertainties in nuclear data deal with the influence of these uncertainties on the effective multiplication factor by introducing the so-called sensitivity factors and only some of these are concerned with the influence of such uncertainties on the life calculation results. On the other hand, the uncertainties in reaction rates, the neutron flux, and other quantities may lead to major distortions in findings, this making it important to be able to determine the influence of uncertainties on the nuclear concentrations of nuclides in their burn-up process. The possibility for the neutron flux and reaction rate uncertainties to propagate to the nuclear concentrations of nuclides obtained as part of burn-up calculations are considered using an example of a MOX-fuel PWR reactor cell. To this end, three burn-up calculation cycles were performed, and the propagation of uncertainties was analyzed. The advantages of the uncertainty estimation method implemented in the VisualBurnOut code consists in that all root-mean-square deviations are obtained as part of one calculation as the statistical method, e.g. GRS (Generation Random Sampled), requires multiple calculations. The VisualBurnOut calculation results for the root-mean-square deviations in nuclear concentrations were verified using a simple model problem. It is shown that there is a complex dependence of the propagation of the root-mean-square deviations in the nuclear concentrations of nuclides in the process of fuel burn-up, and, therefore, further studies need to aim at investigating the influence of uncertainties in nuclear data on the nuclear concentrations of nuclides.

Abstract
This paper makes a brief historical review, from the user point of view, of the impact of the different covariance data made available during this period, then look at today current situation in the different evaluated files, using practical examples. In particular, the performance, in terms of C/E, of two of the most recent and reliable evaluate files, CIELO and CIELO-2, is presented for a set of selected integral experiments. Moreover, this performance is compared for consistency against the uncertainty computed with two of the current most used covariance data (COMMARA-2.0 and COMACV1). A limited number of comparisons are also shown relative to the JENDL-4 data. Of specific interest is the observed difference due separately to the diagonal and off-diagonal (correlations) contributions. Finally, some perspective and future needs are discussed.

Method to Reduce Long-lived Fission Products by Nuclear Transmutations with Fast Spectrum Reactors. Sci Rep 2017; 7:13961. [PMID: 29066843 PMCID: PMC5654822 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-017-14319-7] [Citation(s) in RCA: 22] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/03/2017] [Accepted: 10/09/2017] [Indexed: 11/08/2022] Open
Abstract
Transmutation of long-lived fission products (LLFPs: 79Se, 93Zr, 99Tc, 107Pd, 129I, and 135Cs) into short-lived or non-radioactive nuclides by fast neutron spectrum reactors without isotope separation has been proposed as a solution to the problem of radioactive wastes disposal. Despite investigation of many methods, such transmutation remains technologically difficult. To establish an effective and efficient transmutation system, we propose a novel neutron moderator material, yttrium deuteride (YD2), to soften the neutron spectrum leaking from the reactor core. Neutron energy spectra and effective half-lives of LLFPs, transmutation rates, and support ratios were evaluated with the continuous-energy Monte Carlo code MVP-II/MVP-BURN and the JENDL–4.0 cross section library. With the YD2 moderator in the radial blanket and shield regions, effective half-lives drastically decreased from 106 to 102 years and the support ratios reached 1.0 for all six LLFPs. This successful development and implementation of a transmutation system for LLFPs without isotope separation contributes to a the ability of fast spectrum reactors to reduce radioactive waste by consuming their own LLFPs.
