Abstract
The conjoint application of the voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP) methodology and the Mott-Schottky analysis (MS) of impedance data to studying metal corrosion patinas is described. The study is applied to copper and bronze objects exploiting the semiconducting character of cuprite and other copper corrosion products. A simplified theoretical modeling of MS analysis at microparticulate deposits extracted from metal corrosion layers attached to graphite electrodes is provided. The proposed model compensates for the disturbing effect of the regions of the basal electrode directly exposed to the electrolyte. Alternative models accounting for the variation of the density of charge carriers with depth are tested as well as the correlation between VIMP and MS data with reasonably satisfactory results.

Abstract
An electrochemical study of lyophilized blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) and raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) fruits was carried out using microparticulate deposits from ethanolic extracts of fruits in contact with different aqueous electrolytes. This voltammetry is dominated by the oxidation of anthocyanins. It was hypothesized that under conditions of electrochemical generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), new anthocyanin-derived species with high antioxidant capacity are formed over a wide pH range. In the case of ROS-activated anthocyanins, electrochemical oxidation is associated with loss of sugar moieties. Experimental voltammetric and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) imaging data consistent with this hypothesis are presented.

Abstract
Insert A multiple-scan voltammetry strategy is described and applied to a set of 107 Bronze Age and later copper/bronze objects, mainly from sites in Central Europe. This methodology allows the study of the compositional and textural properties (compactness, crystallinity, degree of hydration) of the patina to be studied from the accumulated peak current values for the characteristic signals corresponding to the reduction of cuprite and tenorite to metallic copper. A new model for the relationship between peak current and the depth reached in successive scans is presented and used to discriminate samples of different provenance and manufacturing technique, as well as their ascription to different Bronze Age periods.

Abstract
AbstractThe essential guidelines are presented of a postgraduate course on electrochemistry for master studies at the University of Valencia (Spain). This course has been designed for students with a minimal knowledge of electrochemistry. It is based on laboratory experiments that, starting from an initial theoretical core, promotes the in-laboratory discussion of concepts, operations, functional relations, etc. The course, although focused on voltammetric techniques, covers the main concepts and experimental aspects of electrochemistry and particular attention is put to erroneous conceptions regarding fundamental physicochemical concepts and operations (misconceptions) as well as on general aspects of the scientific methodology (meta-conceptions) around this discipline.

The vast majority of students will not specialise in electrochemistry, but they all can very much benefit from the basics and concepts of electrochemistry. This paper is aimed to give suggestions how the teaching of electrochemistry can easily be interrelated to topics of inorganic, organic, analytical, environmental chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology.

Abstract
In this article, we propose to explore the chemical interaction between Pseudosphinx tetrio L. and Allamanda cathartica L. using different analytical methods, including an innovative electrochemical approach (called electrochemical ecology) and multivariate analysis, and we investigate the potential antimicrobial effects (antibacterial and antifungal activities) of this interaction in order to gain a better understanding of their specific interaction. The analytical study presents a similar chemical profile between the leaves of healthy and herbivorous A. cathartica and the excretions of the caterpillars. The similar analytical profile of the leaves of A. cathartica and the excretions of P. tetrio, and the difference with the caterpillar bodies, suggests a selective excretion of compounds by the caterpillar. The measured antimicrobial activities support the physicochemical tests. The natural products found selectively in the excretions (rather than in the body) could explain the ability of P. tetrio to feed on this toxic Apocynaceae species.

Abstract
Spontaneous Raman scattering is an attractive optical technique for the analysis of gases and liquids; however, their low densities and notoriously weak scattering cross sections demand an enhancement of the spontaneous Raman scattering signal for detection. Here, we have developed a simple but highly effective and fast technique to enhance the signal of spontaneous Raman scattering from gases and liquids. The technique is developed based on the principle of an integrating sphere, which realizes the multiple pass actions of low-energy pump light and the collection of all Raman scattered light for a sample volume of 2 mL. By measuring the ambient air sample with an exposure time of 180 s, we found the experimental detection limit of our spontaneous Raman scattering setup can reach 3 ppm. CH4 (<2 ppm) in air can be also examined by increasing the exposure time to 300 s. The performance of our setup used for the analysis of trace gases is further illustrated by characterizing ethane, propane, butane, and pentane in methane as well as isotopes of carbon dioxide. The results reveal that the detection limit of our setup for liquids can be improved by nearly 4 orders of magnitude compared to that of confocal Raman scattering spectroscopy with the same experimental conditions.

Abstract
Malaria is one of the most widespread parasitic diseases, especially in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America. One of the greatest problems for control of the disease is the emergence of drug resistance, which leads to a need for the development of new antimalarial compounds. The biosynthesis of isoprenoids has been investigated as part of a strategy to identify new targets to obtain new antimalarial drugs. Several isoprenoid quinones, including menaquinone-4 (MK-4/vitamin K2), α- and γ-tocopherol and ubiquinone (UQ) homologs UQ-8 and UQ-9, were previously detected in in vitro cultures of Plasmodium falciparum in asexual stages. Herein, we described for the first time the presence of phylloquinone (PK/vitamin K1) in P. falciparum and discuss the possible origins of this prenylquinone. While our results in metabolic labeling experiments suggest a biosynthesis of PK prenylation via phytyl pyrophosphate (phytyl-PP) with phytol being phosphorylated, on the other hand, exogenous PK attenuated atovaquone effects on parasitic growth and respiration, showing that this metabolite can be transported from extracellular environment and that the mitochondrial electron transport system (ETS) of P. falciparum is capable to interact with PK. Although the natural role and origin of PK remains elusive, this work highlights the PK importance in plasmodial metabolism and future studies will be important to elucidate in seeking new targets for antimalarial drugs.

Abstract
For the first time carbon black based electrode modified with paraffin was applied as a sensor on voltammetry of immobilized microparticles (VIMP) approach for determination of lead solid residues in hair dye samples. The solid microparticles of Pb(II) (Pb(CH3COO)2(s)) immobilized into the carbon paste sensor containing carbon black and paraffin were firstly reduced at initial potentials and further reoxidized at around -0.60 V during anodic scan. Electroanalytical parameters as well as supporting electrolyte composition, and pH were also evaluated. An analytical curve in 0.2 mol L-1 phosphate buffer solution (pH 5.0) from 0.04 to 3.2 μg (R2 = 0.999) with detection and quantification limits of 4 and 13 ng, respectively, were achieved. The method was applied to quantify lead solid residues in hair dye samples without previous mineralization or complex sample pre-treatment. Besides adequate repeatability, stability and selectivity of the developed sensor based on VIMP features, the method using carbon black based sensor was considered advantageous comparing to the results recorded by a spectrometric method (relative error lower than 8%) from several analytical viewpoints.

Abstract
AbstractAleksandr Il’ich Glazunov developed the first electrochemical technique to image the surface of conducting solids giving the technique the name electrography. The electrographic images can mirror the distribution of elements on the surface of solid materials and also the electrochemical activity, caused by variations of “dissolution tension”. Thus, he has established for the first time a kind of spatially resolved electrochemistry. Electrography is also the first direct electroanalytical technique for solid materials. The present paper gives an account of his turbulent life in Russia, Czechoslovakia and Chile, and a discussion of his main scientific achievement, the development of electrography.

Abstract
The possibility of the electrochemical promotion of different solid-to-solid transformations including the performance of successive cation and anion insertion processes has been tested using malachite green, a triphenylmethane dye, in contact with aqueous NaCl electrolyte. Electrochemical data using the voltammetry of microparticles methodology reveal significant differences with the solution phase electrochemistry of the dye. Voltammetric data, combined with atomic force microscopy, focusing ion beam-field emission scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy permit characterization of the oxidative dissolution, oxidation with anion insertion, reduction with cation insertion and reduction with anion issue processes, whose thermochemical aspects, involving separate ion and electron transport contributions, are discussed.

Abstract
Nanolayered cobalt-molybdenum sulphide (Co-Mo-S) materials have been established as excellent catalysts for C-S bond construction. These catalysts allow for the preparation of a broad range of thioethers in good to excellent yields from structurally diverse thiols and readily available primary as well as secondary alcohols. Chemoselectivity in the presence of sensitive groups such as double bonds, nitriles, carboxylic esters and halogens has been demonstrated. It is also shown that the reaction takes place through a hydrogen-autotransfer (borrowing hydrogen) mechanism that involves Co-Mo-S-mediated dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions. A novel catalytic protocol based on the thioetherification of alcohols with hydrogen sulphide (H2S) to furnish symmetrical thioethers has also been developed using these earth-abundant metal-based sulphide catalysts.

Abstract
Dating needs an age-dependent phenomenon (a "clock"), a procedure for monitoring the advance of time by measuring a physicochemical quantity, and, in the case of archeological artifacts, a sampling procedure that guarantees the representativity and integrity of the dated objects. Metal corrosion in an aerobic atmosphere is a phenomenon whose advance can in principle be used as a clock that depends on the environmental conditions. In spite of the limitation imposed by differences in local conditions of corrosion, a new approach for age determinations has been developed and applied as a feasible tool for age determinations of metallic specimens studied by archeologists and historians. These techniques allow the recording of specific electrochemical features characterizing the state of growth of corrosion patinas, i.e., they are based on corrosion clocks. The application of corrosion clocks for age determination is possible in favorable cases where the corrosion happened to proceed uniformly and continuously. The proposed methods for dating of lead, copper/bronze, leaded bronze, and gold are mainly based on the voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP). This technique is exceptionally useful in the archeological domain because it requires only submicrogram sample amounts and permits sampling of different locations on the object, thus yielding representative data collected essentially noninvasively. Reported methods for dating of metals include lead, copper/bronze, and gold, obviously in all cases assuming uniform conditions of corrosion in a moderately aggressive environment. In the case of lead, age markers are porous PbO and PbO2 formed in the secondary patina. In the case of copper/bronze, aging is accompanied by a rise in the tenorite-to-cuprite ratio in the secondary patina. These changes in the composition of the patina can be monitored electrochemically using VIMP. The case of gold is different, as no "true" corrosion patina is formed. Here the age marker is the increase in electrochemically active gold sites, which is ultimately related to the adsorption of oxygen species and its diffusion/interchange/spillover through the external layers of the metal surface. Conjointly considered, such methods provide a new research line intersecting electrochemistry and cultural heritage that can be expanded via improvements in calibration and analysis to become an operative tool in the archeological domain.

Abstract
The reactions of labile [Re(diimine)(CO)3(H2O)]+ precursors (diimine = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy; 1,10-phenanthroline, phen) with dicyanoargentate anion produce the dirhenium cyanide-bridged compounds [{Re(diimine)(CO)3}2CN)]+ (1 and 2). Substitution of the axial carbonyl ligands in 2 for triphenylphosphine gives the derivative [{Re(phen)(CO)2(PPh3)}2CN]+ (3), while the employment of a neutral metalloligand [Au(PPh3)(CN)] affords heterobimetallic complex [{Re(phen)(CO)3}NCAu(PPh3)]+ (4). Furthermore, the utilization of [Au(CN)2]-, [Pt(CN)4]2-, and [Fe(CN)6]4-/3- cyanometallates leads to the higher nuclearity aggregates [{Re(diimine)(CO)3NC} xM] m+ (M = Au, x = 2, 5 and 6; Pt, x = 4, 7 and 8; Fe, x = 6, 9 and 10). All novel compounds were characterized crystallographically. Assemblies 1-8 are phosphorescent both in solution and in the solid state; according to the DFT analysis, the optical properties are mainly associated with charge transfer from Re tricarbonyl motif to the diimine fragment. The energy of this process can be substantially modified by the properties of the ancillary ligands that allows to attain near-IR emission for 3 (λem = 737 nm in CH2Cl2). The Re-FeII/III complexes 9 and 10 are not luminescent but exhibit low energy absorptions, reaching 846 nm (10) due to ReI → FeIII transition.

Abstract
The redox chemistry of solid α-HgS particles is revealed using a carbon/PVDF composite containing α-HgS, carbon black, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The electrochemical behaviour of the carbon/PVDF composite is first characterised with three water insoluble organic solids. Then the reduction of solid α-HgS particles is investigated and found to occur at a high negative potential, -1.82 V versus saturated mercury sulphate reference electrode, to form metallic mercury and sulphide ions. The subsequent oxidation of metallic mercury and sulphide occurs at +0.24 and -0.49 V versus MSE respectively.
