"In Vitro" and "In Vivo" Diagnostic Check for the Thermochemistry of Metal-Organic Compounds

Volatile metal β-diketonates are of interest from both practical and theoretical perspectives (manufacturing of film materials, catalysis, and the nature of metal-ligand bonding). Knowledge of their reliable thermochemical properties is essential for effective applications. However, there is an unacceptable scattering of the available data on the enthalpies of formation. In this work, we proposed "in vitro" and "in vivo" diagnostic tools to verify the available enthalpies of formation in both the crystalline and gaseous states for metal tris-β-diketonates. The "in vitro" procedure involved high-level quantum-chemical calculations and was applied to define a consistent data set on the enthalpies of formation for iron(III) β-diketonates. This data set has provided the basis for "in vivo" structure-property-based diagnostics to evaluate the robustness of the thermochemical data for β-diketonate tris-complexes with metals other than iron.

Error or exemption to the rule? Development of a diagnostic check for thermochemistry of metal-organic compounds

Volatile metal β-diketonates are well-known precursors used in Metal-Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) for manufacturing film materials. Knowledge of vapour pressures and sublimation/vaporization thermodynamics of the MOCVD precursors is indispensable for optimization of deposition. However, the spread of available data could be unacceptably large for the same precursor for several reasons related to its chemical nature or incorrectly configured conditions of tensimetric investigation. In this work, we have developed an algorithm for a general diagnostic check, based on principles of group-additivity, for thermochemistry on solid-gas, liquid-gas, and solid-liquid phase transitions of metal-organic compounds and applied it to tris(beta-diketonato)iron complexes. The diagnostic tool helps to localize general "healthy" thermochemical interconnected data, and, subsequently, isolate molecules with definitely "ill" properties from the data pool. This diagnostic tool could be expanded and adapted for β-diketonate complexes with metals other than iron.

Solvatochromism as a probe to observe the solvent exchange process in a 1-D porous coordination polymer with 1-D solvent accessible channels

A one-dimensional porous coordination polymer possessing pleochroic and solvatochromic properties produces an unexpected double V-shaped discolouration of the crystal upon solvent exchange with acetonitrile and nitromethane. Modelling shows that the origin of this effect is preferential sorption at two faces of the crystal.

Experimental determination of the Cr-C(2)Cl(4) bond dissociation enthalpy in Cr(CO)(5)(C(2)Cl(4)): quantifying metal-olefin bonding interactions

The bond dissociation enthalpy for the Cr-C(2)Cl(4) bond in gas-phase Cr(CO)(5)(C(2)Cl(4)) has been determined to be 12.8 +/- 1.6 kcal/mol using transient infrared spectroscopy. The results of a density functional theory-based energy decomposition analysis are used to quantify the metal-olefin bonding interactions in terms of the bonding description provided by the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model (sigma donation and back-bonding). The bond energy decomposition analysis reveals that metal-olefin bond strengths can be strongly influenced by the Pauli repulsion energy and by the energy necessary to deform the olefin and the metal-centered moiety from their equilibrium geometries to their geometry in the final complex. Further, a comparison between the metal-olefin bond strengths and the magnitude of the electronic interactions demonstrates that the energy associated with these deformations is the determining factor in the trends in bond enthalpies in the series of complexes Cr(CO)(5)(C(2)X(4)) (X = H, F, Cl). Though deformation of the Cr(CO)(5) moiety contributes to the overall deformation energy, the major contribution involves deformation of the olefin. This occurs as a consequence of rehybridization of the olefin as a result of metal-olefin back-bonding. The results are discussed in terms of the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model, which provides the accepted qualitative description of bonding in organometallic olefin complexes.
