Complex refractive index of ammonium nitrate in the 2-20-microm spectral range

Using high-resolution Fourier-transform infrared absorbance and transmittance spectral data for ammonium sulfate (AMS), calcium carbonate (CAC), and ammonium nitrate (AMN), we made comparisons with previously published complex reactive-index data for AMS and CAC to infer experimental parameters to determine the imaginary refractive index for AMN in the infrared wavelength range from 2 to 20 microm. Subtractive Kramers-Kronig mathematical relations were applied to calculate the real refractive index for the three compositions. Excellent agreement for AMS and CAC with the published values was found, validating the complex refractive index obtained for AMN. We performed backscatter calculations using a log-normal size distribution for AMS, AMN, and CAC aerosols to show differences in their backscattered spectra.

Lidar calibration technique using laboratory-generated aerosols

A new calibration technique for continuous-wave Doppler lidars that uses an aerosol scattering target has been developed. Calibrations with both single- and many-particle scattering were performed at the same lidar operating conditions as in atmospheric measurements. The calibrating targets, simulating atmospheric aerosols, were laboratory-generated spherical silicone oil droplets with known complex refractive indices and sizes, hence with known single-particle backscatter cross sections as obtained from Mie theory. Measurements of lidar efficiency with the conventional hard target calibration method were consistently higher by a factor of ~2 than measurements with the aerosol calibration technique. This result may have important implications for lidar backscatter estimates both for aerosol modeling efforts and for optimal design of future lidar systems. The aerosol calibration method provides a validation of basic lidar theory for particle scattering for coherent detection.

Atmospheric backscatter vertical profiles at 9.2 and 10.6 microm: a comparative study

We report a series of atmospheric aerosol backscatter measurements at two widely spaced CO(2) laser wavelengths: 9.25 and 10.6 microm. Comparisons are made beween backscatter coefficient profiles at these two wavelengths up to 20-km altitude. Measurements such as those reported here can be used to assess the feasibility of coherent CO(2) lidar for wind measurements, and they also provide a partial test of backscatter model predictions.
