Imaging stretching and displacement using gradient-index elements during the lens design process

In this study, we propose an approach to stretch or translate images using gradient-index (GRIN) elements with a rotationally symmetric shape in lens systems. In this method, the GRIN material, instead of optical surfaces, are utilized to enable a breaking of rotational symmetry for the two image translations. GRIN expression with anamorphic and tilting terms is introduced. A pair of GRIN elements in front of the given system alters the magnification in two orthogonal directions using the anamorphic terms in the expression, which realizes image stretching. A pair of GRIN elements with tilting terms is used after the given system tilts the optical path to achieve a transverse displacement of the image. The structure of the given system remains unchanged when these translations are performed. A design method for the GRIN elements is presented. Additionally, a design example is presented whose image is stretched by 1.33 times in one direction and displaced to one side of its axis to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. The approach in this study may enable novel imaging GRIN lens system designs with flexible image positions or special optical functions.

Development of gradient index microlenses for the broadband infrared range

The development of gradient index free-form micro-optic components dedicated to the mid-infrared range is challenging due to the lack of appropriate technology. We propose a method for developing gradient index components for broadband infrared range beyond the transmission window of silicate glass based on nanostructurization using a stack-and-draw fiber drawing technique. A proof-of-concept microlens is developed and verified experimentally in the wavelength range 1.5-4.3 µm. The microlenses are composed of a set of nanorods with a diameter of 940 nm made of a pair of SiO₂-PbO-Bi₂O₃-Ga₂O₃ based glasses ordered into the preliminary calculated binary pattern. The pattern forms effectively continuous parabolic refractive index distribution for infrared range according to Maxwell-Garnett effective medium model. The development of individual microlenses with a diameter of 118 µm and focal length of 278 µm at the wavelength of 3.75 µm are reported. A large array of 737 microlenses with an individual diameter of 125 µm and focal length of 375 µm is also presented and analyzed.

3D printed gradient index glass optics

We demonstrate an additive manufacturing approach to produce gradient refractive index glass optics. Using direct ink writing with an active inline micromixer, we three-dimensionally print multimaterial green bodies with compositional gradients, consisting primarily of silica nanoparticles and varying concentrations of titania as the index-modifying dopant. The green bodies are then consolidated into glass and polished, resulting in optics with tailored spatial profiles of the refractive index. We show that this approach can be used to achieve a variety of conventional and unconventional optical functions in a flat glass component with no surface curvature.

Design of gradient-index lens systems for laser beam reshaping

Refractive systems using two gradient-index lenses have been designed to convert a collimated Gaussian-profile laser beam into a plane wave with a uniform intensity distribution. The axial gradient-index distribution for two lenses is determined by using the energy conservation condition and the constant optical path-length condition. The design consideration and theoretical analysis are presented along with several applications.
