Measurements of collisional linewidths in the nu(2) band of H(2)O from Fourier-transformed flame spectra

An intercomparison of measured pressure-broadening and pressure-shifting parameters of water vapor

The present work is an intercomparison of experimental results on the pressure broadening and pressure shifting of water vapor absorption lines. The work focuses on application to the Earth's atmosphere; hence measurements of nitrogen, oxygen, air, and H2O as the buffer, or perturbing gas, were considered. The literature was searched and over 100 papers found. The data, measured half-widths, their temperature dependence, and the line shifts, were taken and databases created for each perturbing gas. The databases were reordered, grouping data for rovibrational transitions, and intercomparisons of the measurements made. Trends in the data, relationships between the data sets, and dependences on temperature and quantum numbers were investigated. The data were averaged and an estimated uncertainty determined. The averaged data sets are evaluated with respect to the need of the spectroscopic and remote sensing communities. Based on these studies, recommendations for new measurements are made.Key words: water vapor, half-widths, line shifts, temperature dependence of half-width.

High-Lying Rotational Levels of Water: An Analysis of the Energy Levels of the Five First Vibrational States

As a continuation of the work carried out on the ground and (010) vibrational states of water (R. Lanquetin, L. H. Coudert, and C. Camy-Peyret, 1999, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 195, 54-57), rotational energy levels for these two states are revisited here and new accurate rotational energy levels are considered for the three next vibrational states, that is, the (020), (100), and (001) states. Experimental rotational energies, along with their uncertainties, are retrieved through analyses of already published data sets and of discharge and flame emission spectra. The maximum value of J for the obtained levels is 25 for the ground state, 21 for the (010) state, and 20 for the three next states. Based on the bending-rotation Hamiltonian approach (L. H. Coudert, 1997, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 181, 246-273), a new theoretical approach is proposed to calculate rotational energies in the five interacting vibrational states under consideration and is used to carry out an analysis of the experimental energies. High-Lying Rotational Levels of Water: Comparison of Calculated and Experimental Energy Levels for (000) and (010) up to J = 25 and 21

Emission spectra of methane-oxygen low-pressure flames have been recorded at a resolution of 0.02 cm-1 with an infrared Fourier transform spectrometer in the spectral ranges 780-1370 and 1800-5000 cm-1. The flame temperature was about 1850 K and a large number of transitions involving J values as high as 34 for an extended set of vibrational states could be assigned. Combined with already published data sets on H2O, our line position analysis yielded rotational energy levels for many of these states, but only the results relevant to the ground and the (010) states are presented here. The experimental energies for these two states have been fitted with the help of the bending-rotation Hamiltonian approach [L. H. Coudert, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 181, 246-273 (1997)], and for each rotational level, the calculated energy along with its uncertainty is reported and compared with the observed value. Allene nu9 and nu10: Low-Temperature Measurements of Line Intensity

We report laboratory intensity measurements for the weak nu9 (998.8 cm-1) and intense nu10 (841.1 cm-1) bands of allene. Allene is predicted to be a constituent of Titan's atmosphere, and measurements of its abundance would yield important information about the atmospheric chemistry of that body. Spectra were obtained at a temperature of 200 K (approximating Titan conditions) using the high-resolution FTS instrument at Kitt-Peak National Observatory's McMath-Pierce observatory. A total of 505 nu9 and 687 nu10 line intensities were fit using a least-squares method to accurately determine two sets of transition dipole moments. Integrated band intensities computed utilizing the fitted parameters were found to be 36 +/- 4% cm-2 atm-1 and 301 +/- 4% cm-2 atm-1 for nu9 and nu10, respectively, at 200 K. Hot Bands of Water up to 6nu2-5nu2 in the 933-2500 cm-1 Region

Emission spectra have been recorded for hot water at temperatures up to 1550 degreesC. Separate spectra have been recorded in the 800-1900 and 1800-2500 cm-1 range. Assignments are made using a linelist generated from high accuracy, variational nuclear motion calculations, and energy differences. The spectra contain many hot bending transitions of the form (0n0)-(0n-10), where states up to n = 6 have been assigned. Detailed analysis shows that the spectra contain lines from 34 separate vibrational bands including other hot bending transitions and the difference bands (030)-(100), (110)-(020), (011)-(020), (100)-(010), (040)-(110), (040)-(011), (120)-(030), (012)-(030), (011)-(100), (110)-(001), and (101)-(110), all of which have not been observed previously. From a total of 8959 lines recorded, 6810 have been assigned; 4556 of these lines are new. These spectra represent the first detection of the (060) vibrational band, for which a band origin of 8870.54 +/- 0.05 cm-1 is determined. The (050) band origin is confirmed as 7542.40 +/- 0.03 cm-1. The assignments extend the range of J and Ka values observed for the bending states, particularly for (050) and (060), where 63 and 27 different rotational levels, respectively, have now been observed; 53 frequencies given in HITRAN are corrected. Two-tone frequency-modulation spectroscopy for quantitative measurements of gaseous species: theoretical, numerical, and experimental investigation of line shapes

The capability of retrieving spectral information from line shapes recorded by two-tone frequency-modulation spectroscopy (TTFMS) is investigated. A TTFMS theory accounting for dispersion and nonlinear distortion of diode laser frequency modulation response is presented. The adequacy of the theory for a detailed modeling of line shapes recorded with high resolution is examined. An extensive error analysis of line parameters (i.e., width, intensity, and line center) retrieved by a nonlinear least-squares fitting procedure is made. Plots of residual errors with characteristic signatures that are due to incorrectly assigned modulation parameters and choice of line profile are presented. In least-squares fits to experimental oxygen data with a Voigt profile influence from collisional(Dicke) narrowing is clearly exhibited, and when we used a collisionally narrowed line profile deviations of the model were reduced to less than 0.2%. We demonstrate that accurate quantitative measurements by TTFMS over a wide range of concentrations, temperatures, and pressures are possible.
