Matrix optics of artificial intraocular pinhole apertures in astigmatic eyes: modelling depth of field

This study uses matrix optics to develop a model to predict depth of field in eyes that may have astigmatic elements and apertures that may be elliptical in general. Depth of field is modelled as the visual acuity (VA) as a function of working distance and is illustrated graphically for model eyes that have artificial intraocular pinhole apertures. A small amount of residual myopia is an advantage to increasing the depth of field at near without interfering with distance-vision. A small amount of residual astigmatism is not an advantage to increasing depth of field, without compromising VA at all distances.

Extended depth of field in augmented reality

The 3D display device shows an image with depth information. Conventional 3D display devices based on binocular parallax can focus accurately only on the depth of a specific screen. Because the human eye has a narrow depth of field (DOF) under normal circumstances, 3D displays that provide a relatively wide range of virtual depth areas have limitations on the DOF where clear 3D images are seen. To resolve this problem, it is necessary to find the optical conditions to extend the DOF and analyze the phenomena related to it. For this, by using the Rayleigh criterion and the Strehl ratio, a criterion for this extension of the DOF is suggested. A practical optical structure that can effectively extend the DOF is devised using a flat panel display. This optical structure could be applied to AR, VR, and MR in the field of near-eye displays. From the results of this research, the fundamental optical conditions and standards are proposed for 3D displays that will provide 3D images with extended DOF in the future. Furthermore, it is also expected that these conditions and criteria can be applied to optical designs for the required performance in the development of 3D displays in various fields.

Testing impacts of global blur profiles using a multiscale vision simulator

Although it is possible to specify the impact of blur at a specific retinal location, a lack of understanding exists regarding how the inhomogeneous blur distribution across the retina (i.e., global blur) affects the quality of an optical correction at a specific retinal location. To elucidate this issue, a multiscale visual simulator combining the projection of a controllable high-resolution stimulus and an ocular monitoring system was constructed to simultaneously simulate foveal and extrafoveal blurs. To define the range and capability of a wide-angle stimulation, an optimal working pupil was evaluated by optical ray-tracing via a Monte Carlo simulation, including optical variations corresponding to fixational eye movements. To investigate the impacts of global blur on the perception of discrete regions of the visual field, the bothersome blur threshold from five subjects was measured through this novel system using a collection of zonal blurs (annuli image projected sequentially at discrete retinal regions), and these impacts were compared with those using a spatially-varying blur (continuum of simultaneously projected zonal blurs of varying strengths, simulating retinal blur variations). Our results show that the zonal blur threshold does not entirely predict the global blur threshold, having a tendency to overestimate blur the threshold. It was concluded that, in addition to the amount of defocus present at a defined retinal location, the perception of individual defocused retinal regions can be affected by global blur. Given that blur tolerance can affect the perception of optically induced blurs, the findings provide useful implications for designing new optical correction.

Design of lensless retinal scanning display with diffractive optical element

We propose a design of a retinal-scanning-based near-eye display for augmented reality. Our solution is highlighted by a laser scanning projector, a diffractive optical element, and a moist eye with gradient refractive indices. The working principles related to each component are comprehensively studied. Its key performance is summarized as follows. The field of view is 122°, angular resolution is 8.09', diffraction efficiency is 57.6%, transmittance is 80.6%, uniformity is 0.91, luminance is 323 cd/m², modulation transfer functions are above 0.99999 at 3.71 cycle/degree, contrast ratio is 4878, and distortion is less than 24%.
