Fiber-Optic Telecommunication Network Wells Monitoring by Phase-Sensitive Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer with Disturbance Recognition

The paper presents the application of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (phi-OTDR) in the field of urban infrastructure monitoring. In particular, the branched structure of the urban network of telecommunication wells. The encountered tasks and difficulties are described. The possibilities of usage are substantiated, and the numerical values of the event quality classification algorithms applied to experimental data are calculated using machine learning methods. Among the considered methods, the best results were shown by convolutional neural networks, with a probability of correct classification as high as 98.55%.

Miniature Diamond-Based Fiber Optic Pressure Sensor with Dual Polymer-Ceramic Adhesives

Diamond is a good candidate for harsh environment sensing due to its high melting temperature, Young’s modulus, and thermal conductivity. A sensor made of diamond will be even more promising when combined with some advantages of optical sensing (i.e., EMI inertness, high temperature operation, and miniaturization). We present a miniature diamond-based fiber optic pressure sensor fabricated using dual polymer-ceramic adhesives. The UV curable polymer and the heat-curing ceramic adhesive are employed for easy and reliable optical fiber mounting. The usage of the two different adhesives considerably improves the manufacturability and linearity of the sensor, while significantly decreasing the error from the temperature cross-sensitivity. Experimental study shows that the sensor exhibits good linearity over a pressure range of 2.0–9.5 psi with a sensitivity of 18.5 nm/psi (R² = 0.9979). Around 275 °C of working temperature was achieved by using polymer/ceramic dual adhesives. The sensor can benefit many fronts that require miniature, low-cost, and high-accuracy sensors including biomedical and industrial applications. With an added antioxidation layer on the diamond diaphragm, the sensor can also be applied for harsh environment applications due to the high melting temperature and Young’s modulus of the material.

Low-loss semi-reflective in-fiber mirrors

This paper presents a method for the efficient production of all-fiber semi reflective mirrors suitable for fiber sensors and other all-fiber device applications. The mirrors are obtained by the short duration etching of a standard single mode fiber in hydrofluoric acid, followed by an on-line feedback-assisted fusion splicing process. Fiber mirror reflectance up to 9.5% with excess losses below 0.25 dB were produced in practice, which is in good agreement with provided theoretical and modeling analyses. Control over the etching time and fusion splicing process allows for balancing between reflectance and transmittance, while maintaining low excess loss of experimentally produced mirrors.

Digital and analog readout systems for fiber-optic strain sensors as applied to the monitoring of roller element bearing systems

A rotating machinery test rig was instrumented with fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer strain sensors for condition monitoring of rolling element bearings. Strain variations produced by ball passes were observed and analyzed in the time and frequency domain. Wavelength division multiplexing was utilized to simultaneously monitor the sensors with analog and digital readout systems--analog for high bandwidth and digital for high dynamic range and the monitoring of multiple sensors. The effects of imbalance on the shaft, changes in rotational speed, effects on the rotor system, and detection of bearing defects were investigated. Frequency peaks observed in the bearing sensor spectra closely matched predicted values. Imbalance and rotational speed tests showed good agreement with expected trends, and bearing defects were successfully detected.

Interferometric fiber-optic sensor embedded in a spark plug for in-cylinder pressure measurement in engines

Pressure sensing in an internal combustion engine with an intrinsic fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI) integrated with a spark plug is demonstrated for the first time. The spark plug was used for the ignition of the cylinder in which it was mounted. The FFPI element, protected with a copper/gold coating, was embedded in a groove in the spark-plug housing. Gas pressure inthe engine induced longitudinal strain in this housing, which was also experienced by the fiber-optic sensing element. The sensor was monitored with a signal conditioning unit containing a chirped distributed-feedback laser. Pressure sensitivities as high as 0.00339 radians round-trip phase shift per pounds per square inch of pressure were observed. Measured pressure versus time traces showed good agreement with those from a piezoelectric reference sensor mounted in the same engine cylinder.

Nanometer measurement with a dual fabry-perot interferometer

On the basis of analyzing sinusoidal phase-modulating Fabry-Perot interferometry, a method, believed to be novel, is proposed for achieving nanometer measurement accuracy by measuring the time interval between equal amplitudes of the two elementary frequency signals of the transmitted intensities of a dual Fabry-Perot interferometer. A nanometer measurement system based on the method was designed and tested. The experimental results show that the displacement resolution of the system is 0.32 nm at a 1-kHz modulating signal.

Knocking Detection of a Gasoline Engine by Utilizing an Optical Fiber with Specific Refractive-index Composition

Abnormal combustion of a gasoline engine is often accompanied by a sharp metallic noise called knocking. A recently proposed method of in-cylinder pressure measurement is applied to detect the knocking, where the bending power loss of a single-mode fiber with specific refractive-index composition is utilized. The high-frequency response of a prototype sensor is obtained with a small structure to utilize the bending mechanism that is installed into an engine head gasket. Knocking signals are detected in a wide range of trace- to heavy-knock conditions.

High-sensitivity intrinsic fiber-optic Fabry-Perot pressure sensor

A new configuration for a pressure sensor in which the motion of a diaphragm produces strain in a fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI) is described. The single-mode fiber containing the interferometer is bonded at one end to the stainless-steel diaphragm. The fiber is also attached beyond the interferometer to the sensor housing in such a manner that it is always under tension and experiences a strain in proportion to the deflection of the diaphragm. An analysis relating the expected interferometer phase change to pressure is presented, and the dynamic response of the FFPI sensor to pressure changes produced by an air pump is in good agreement with that measured with a conventional pressure sensor.

Multiplex in-cylinder pressure measurement utilizing an optical fiber with specific refractive-index composition

An approach to multiplex in-cylinder pressure measurement that utilizes a single-mode optical fiber with specific refractive-index composition has been proposed. The sensing fiber has been designed to show a certain amount of optical power loss with a small change in the fiber-local-bend radius. Along with pressure-transferring diaphragms the sensing fiber was embedded into the head gasket of a four-cylinder gasoline engine. The internal-pressure change in each combustion chamber was detected on the basis of bending power loss in the fiber. Combustion pressure peaks for each cylinder were clearly observed.

Multiplexed interferometric fiber-optic sensors with digital signal processing

A microcontroller-based digital signal processing system developed for use with fiber-optic sensors for measuring pressure in internal combustion engines is described. A single distributed feedback laser source provides optical power for four interferometric sensors. The laser current is repetitively modulated so that its optical frequency is nearly a linear function of time over most of a cycle. The interferometer phase shift is proportional to the elapsed time from the initiation of a sawtooth until the sensor output signal level crosses a threshold value proportional to the laser output power. This elapsed time, assumed to vary linearly with the combustion chamber pressure, is determined by the use of a digital timer-counter. The system has been used with fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer transducers for in-cylinder pressure measurement on a four-cylinder gasoline-powered engine.
