Transient thermal lens in a ZnGeP(2) crystal

High Repetition Rate, Tunable Mid-Infrared BaGa4Se7 Optical Parametric Oscillator Pumped by a 1 μm Nd:YAG Laser

A tunable and compact mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on BaGa4Se7 (BGSe) crystal with a repetition rate up to 250 Hz was demonstrated. A high energy and more approachable side-pumped Q-switched Nd:YAG laser was employed as the pump for the BGSe OPO. Due to the pump double-pass single-resonant oscillator (DP-SRO) configuration, the maximum average power of 250 mW and the maximum pulse energy of 1.28 mJ at 4.06 μm was achieved with the repetition rate of 250 Hz and 100 Hz, respectively. The tunable mid-infrared output from 3.42–4.73 μm was obtained. The influence of repetition rate and cavity length was studied and the thermal effect was analyzed.

Effects of pump pulse energy and repetition rate on beam quality in a high-power mid-infrared ZnGeP2 OPO

We report on changes of beam quality with rising pump pulse energy and repetition rate in a high-power mid-infrared ZnGeP₂ (ZGP) OPO in a non-planar cavity. The ZGP OPO generates 25 W in 3 - 5 μm pumped by a 10 kHz Q-switched Ho:LLF MOPA system at 2 μm. The beam quality factor increases from nearly diffraction-limited at OPO threshold to a M² = 1.8 at maximum pump power. The degradation can be attributed to thermal lensing and gain guiding effects in the nonlinear crystal. To discriminate between those effects, we monitored the beam quality as a function of the repetition rate at the highest pump pulse energy using a Pockels cell as a pulse picker. Therefore, the heat load inducing thermal lensing increases linearly, whereas gain guiding remains nearly unaffected. M² shows a minimum of 1.2 at 1 kHz, starting from 1.3 at 100 Hz and rising to 1.8 at 10 kHz. Those findings have been reproduced by numerical simulations. Further investigations show the transient evolution of beam quality, revealing the thermal lens build-up process to the steady-state.

High peak-power mid-infrared ZnGeP₂ optical parametric oscillator pumped by a Tm:fiber master oscillator power amplifier system

We report on the utilization of a novel Tm:fiber laser source for mid-IR ZnGeP2 (ZGP) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumping. The pump laser is built in a master oscillator power-amplifier configuration delivering up to 3.36 W of polarized, diffraction limited output power with 7 ns pulse duration and 4 kHz repetition rate. This corresponds to a peak power of ∼121  kW and a pulse energy of ∼0.84  mJ. With this source, we generated 27.9 kW of total mid-IR peak power in a doubly resonant oscillator (DRO) configuration. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest ever demonstrated mid-IR peak power from a directly Tm:fiber laser pumped ZGP OPO. Moreover, a DRO output with about 284 μJ of total mid-IR pulse energy was demonstrated using 100 ns pump pulses. The wavelength tuning of the idler was extended to 6 μm with lower output power in another OPO experiment.
