Development of Fourier transform spectrometry for UV-visible differential optical absorption spectroscopy measurements of tropospheric minor constituents

Surface temperature determination using long range thermal emission spectroscopy based on a first order scanning Fabry-Pérot interferometer

Determination of the surface temperature of different materials based on thermographic imaging is a difficult task as the thermal emission spectrum is both temperature and emissivity dependent. Without prior knowledge of the emissivity of the object under investigation, it makes up a temperature-emissivity underdetermined system. This work demonstrates the possibility of recognizing specific materials from hyperspectral thermal images (HSTI) in the wavelength range from 8-14 µm. The hyperspectral images were acquired using a microbolometer sensor array in combination with a scanning 1^st order Fabry-Pérot interferometer acting as a bandpass filter. A logistic regression model was used to successfully differentiate between polyimide tape, sapphire, borosilicate glass, fused silica, and alumina ceramic at temperatures as low as 34.0 ± 0.05 °C. Each material was recognized with true positive rates above 94% calculated from individual pixel spectra. The surface temperature of the samples was subsequently predicted using pre-fitted partial least squares (PLS) models, which predicted all surface temperature values with a common root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.10 °C and thereby outperforming conventional thermography. This approach paves the way for a practical solution to the underdetermined temperature-emissivity system.

Ultraviolet dual comb spectroscopy: a roadmap

Dual Comb Spectroscopy proved its versatile capabilities in molecular fingerprinting in different spectral regions, but not yet in the ultraviolet (UV). Unlocking this spectral window would expand fingerprinting to the electronic energy structure of matter. This will access the prime triggers of photochemical reactions with unprecedented spectral resolution. In this research article, we discuss the milestones marking the way to the first UV dual comb spectrometer. We present experimental and simulated studies towards UV dual comb spectroscopy, directly applied to planned absorption measurements of formaldehyde (centered at 343 nm, 3.6 eV) and argon (80 nm, 16 eV). This will enable an unparalleled relative resolution of up to 10^-9 - with a table-top UV source surpassing any synchrotron-linked spectrometer by at least two and any grating-based UV spectrometer by up to six orders of magnitude.

Towards DCS in the UV Spectral Range for Remote Sensing of Atmospheric Trace Gases

The development of increasingly sensitive and robust instruments and new methodologies are essential to improve our understanding of the Earth’s climate and air pollution. In this context, Dual-Comb spectroscopy (DCS) has been successfully demonstrated as a remote laser-based instrument to probe infrared absorbing species such as greenhouse gases. We present here a study of the sensitivity of Dual-Comb spectroscopy to remotely monitor atmospheric gases focusing on molecules that absorb in the ultraviolet domain, where the most reactive molecules of the atmosphere (OH, HONO, BrO...) have their highest absorption cross-sections. We assess the achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the corresponding minimum absorption sensitivity of DCS in the ultraviolet range. We propose a potential light source for remote sensing UV-DCS and discuss the degree of immunity of UV-DCS to atmospheric turbulences. We show that the characteristics of the currently available UV sources are compatible with the unambiguous identification of UV absorbing gases by UV-DCS.

Step-scan Michelson Fourier-transform spectrometer for optical emission spectroscopy in UV-VIS spectral range

We present the design, construction, and first spectra of a step-scan Michelson Fourier-transform spectrometer for optical emission spectroscopy in the UV-VIS spectral range. The mirror motion mechanism is based on a long-travel piezo-based linear translation stage with built-in position feedback. The step-scan arrangement allows for signal integration, making the instrument suitable for measurements of less intensive radiation sources and for the photon-counting technique. The spectrometer consists of two coupled Michelson interferometers, one for the spectrometer itself and the other to provide positional reference for the mirror stepping mechanism using interference fringes of a stabilized 635 nm laser diode. Using interpolation of the laser interferogram and taking advantage of the translation stage precision in linear-piezo mode, the mechanism is capable of performing 79 nm steps, which puts the Nyquist wavelength at ∼320 nm. The spectrometer was tested by measuring the spectra of HgAr cold-cathode fluorescent lamp and electron-induced fluorescence of ambient air. Two different detectors were used, an amplified photodiode detector and a photomultiplier tube module in photon counting mode. The highest achieved experimental spectral resolving power was ∼4000 using 1 mm of total mirror travel and the highest achieved noise-free dynamic range was 10³. Test results show that the instrument is suitable for use with moderate-to-low intensity signal sources such as small gas discharges and spectroscopic measurements at astronomical telescopes.

UV Fourier transform measurements of tropospheric O3, NO2, SO2, benzene, and toluene

Using the differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) technique and a Fourier transform spectrometer, NO2, SO2, O3, benzene. and toluene were measured during three measurement campaigns held in Brussels in 1995, 1996, and 1997. The O3 concentrations could be explained as the results of the local photochemistry and the dynamical properties of the mixing layer. NO2 concentrations were anti-correlated to the O3 concentrations, as expected. SO2 also showed a pronounced dependence on car traffic. Average benzene and toluene concentrations were, respectively 1.7 ppb and between 4.4 and 6.6 pbb, but high values of toluene up to 98.8 ppb were observed. SO2 concentrations and to a lesser extent, those of NO2 and 03, were dependent on the wind direction. Ozone in Brussels has been found to be influenced by the meteorological conditions prevailing in central Europe. Comparisons with other measurements have shown that 03 and SO2 data are in general in good agreement, but our NO2 concentrations seem to be generally higher.

High-Resolution Fourier-Transform Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrometer for the Measurement of Atmospheric Trace Species: Application to OH

A compact, high-resolution Fourier-transform spectrometer for atmospheric near-ultraviolet spectroscopy has been installed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Table Mountain Facility (34.4 degrees N, 117.7 degrees W, elevation 2290 m). This instrument is designed with an unapodized resolving power near 500,000 at 300 nm to provide high-resolution spectra from 290 to 675 nm for the quantification of column abundances of trace atmospheric species. The measurement technique used is spectral analysis of molecular absorptions of solar radiation. The instrument, accompanying systems designs, and results of the atmospheric hydroxyl column observations are described.

Fourier Transform Spectroscopy of the O(2) Herzberg Bands. III. Absorption Cross Sections of the Collision-Induced Bands and of the Herzberg Continuum

Absorption spectra of molecular oxygen were measured in the laboratory under temperature and pressure conditions prevailing in the Earth's atmosphere. Spectra of pure O(2), O(2) + N(2), and O(2) + Ar were recorded in the 41 700 to 33 000 cm(-1) region (240-300 nm) at a maximal optical path difference of 0.45 cm using a Fourier transform spectrometer and a multiple reflection gas cell. The different components of the spectra, namely the discrete bands of the three Herzberg systems, the Herzberg continuum, and the collision-induced diffuse Wulf bands, were separated. The contribution of the Herzberg bands was first subtracted using the line parameters determined previously [A. Jenouvrier, M.-F. Mérienne, B. Coquart, M. Carleer, S. Fally, A. C. Vandaele, C. Hermans, and R. Colin, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 198, 136-162 (1999)] from high-resolution data. Spectra recorded at various pressures then made it possible to determine by linear regression the intensity of the Wulf bands and the Herzberg continuum. The characteristics of the Wulf bands have been investigated in details: vibrational analysis, pressure effect, foreign gas effect, and a simulated spectrum are reported. The Herzberg continuum cross section is determined below the dissociation limit. A comparison with literature data is given. The new O(2) absorption cross sections and O(2)-O(2) collision-induced absorption cross sections are useful in connection with atmospheric measurements of ozone and other trace gases in the UV spectral region.
