Processing and characterization of silver films used to fabricate hollow glass waveguides

Investigation of hollow cylindrical metal terahertz waveguides suitable for cryogenic environments

The field of terahertz (THz) waveguides continues to grow rapidly, with many being tailored to suit the specific demands of a particular final application. Here, we explore waveguides capable of enabling efficient and accurate power delivery within cryogenic environments (< 4 K). The performance of extruded hollow cylindrical metal waveguides made of un-annealed and annealed copper, as well as stainless steel, have been investigated for bore diameters between 1.75 - 4.6 mm, and at frequencies of 2.0, 2.85 and 3.4 THz, provided by a suitable selection of THz quantum cascade lasers. The annealed copper resulted in the lowest transmission losses, < 3 dB/m for a 4.6 mm diameter waveguide, along with 90° bending losses as low as ~2 dB for a bend radius of 15.9 mm. The observed trends in losses were subsequently analyzed and related to measured inner surface roughness parameters. These results provide a foundation for the development of a wide array of demanding low-temperature THz applications, and enabling the study of fundamental physics.

Silver/cyclic olefin copolymer hollow glass waveguides for infrared laser delivery

Metal/dielectric-coated hollow glass waveguides (HGWs) have been studied extensively for the efficient transmission of radiation over a broad spectral range. In this study, a low-absorption optical polymer, cyclic olefin copolymer (COC), is investigated as a dielectric material for HGWs designed for the delivery of various IR lasers. Using established silver (Ag) plating techniques and a newly optimized polymer-coating procedure, Ag/COC HGWs with low attenuation coefficients are fabricated for operation at the following three wavelengths: 808 nm, 1.064 μm, and 2.94 μm. The spectral responses of the HGW designs are used to develop a film thickness dependency of the COC layer formation based on the concentration of the solution used in the polymer deposition procedure. Further, the attenuation coefficients of the HGWs are measured using the cutback method at the three wavelengths as a function of the curvature of the waveguide. In order of increasing operation, the attenuation coefficients are measured to be 0.549, 0.095, and 0.298  dB/m for the HGWs in the straight configuration. These experimental values for the straight attenuation coefficients are compared to theoretical values calculated using a ray transfer matrix approach and are found to be in good agreement.

Single mode operation with mid-IR hollow fibers in the range 5.1-10.5 µm

Single mode beam delivery in the mid-infrared spectral range 5.1-10.5 μm employing flexible hollow glass waveguides of 15 cm and 50 cm lengths, with metallic/dielectric internal layers and a bore diameter of 200 μm were demonstrated. Three quantum cascade lasers were coupled with the hollow core fibers. For a fiber length of 15 cm, we measured losses down to 1.55 dB at 5.4 μm and 0.9 dB at 10.5 μm. The influence of the launch conditions in the fiber on the propagation losses and on the beam profile at the waveguide exit was analyzed. At 10.5 µm laser wavelength we found near perfect agreement between measured and theoretical losses, while at ~5 µm and ~6 µm wavelengths the losses were higher than expected. This discrepancy can be explained considering an additional scattering loss effect, which scales as 1/λ(2) and is due to surface roughness of the metallic layer used to form the high-reflective internal layer structure of the hollow core waveguide.

Fabrication and transmission characteristics of infrared hollow fiber based on silver-clad stainless steel pipes

Silver-clad stainless steel pipe is used as the supporting tube for the fabrication of infrared hollow fiber. The hollow fiber has high mechanical strength and is highly durable for use in the medical sterilization process. Film of a cyclic olefin polymer layer or silver iodide (AgI) was coated internally to reduce the transmission loss. A liquid-filling method is proposed for coating the AgI layer. Multiple coating processes proved to be effective to increase the AgI film thickness. A treatment of sodium thiosulfate water solution is also proposed to reduce the film thickness. The film thickness can be accurately controlled by combining the coating and decoating techniques. A loss of less than 0.2 dB was obtained for CO2 laser light for a hollow pipe with a length of 280 mm and an inside diameter of 0.75 mm.

Multipass capillary cell for enhanced Raman measurements of gases

A simple Raman multipass capillary cell (MCC) is described that gives 12- to 30-fold signal enhancements for non-absorbing gases. The cell is made by coating the inside of 2-mm inner diameter silica capillary tubes with silver. The device is very small and suitable for remote and in situ Raman measurements with optical fibers. Application of the MCC is similar to previously described liquid core waveguides but, unlike the latter devices, the MCC is generally more applicable to a wide range of non-absorbing gases.

A facile deposition of silver onto the inner surface of a glass capillary tube for micro-surface-enhanced Raman scattering measurements

Silver can be deposited very efficiently onto glass substrates using only ethanolic solutions of AgNO3 and butylamine. This paper reports that the inner surface of a glass capillary can also be coated evenly with silver by shaking it after soaking in ethanolic solutions of AgNO3 and butylamine; the silver deposited outside the capillary can be easily wiped off with cotton wool before drying. The grain size of the silver deposited onto the inner surface can be readily controlled within the range from 20 to 100 nm by varying the relative molar ratio of butylamine and AgNO3 used as reactants. Due to its nanoaggregated structure, the Ag coated capillary is a very efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrate, particularly usable in the microanalysis of chemicals; the detection limit of adenine is as low as 1.0x10(-7) M based on a signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of 3. Since the proposed method is cost-effective and is suitable for the mass production of Ag coated capillaries, we fully expect it to play a significant role in the development of SERS based microchip analyzers and even in the fabrication of Ag coated hollow glass waveguides.

Infrared transmissive, hollow plastic waveguides with inner Ag-Agl coatings

Hollow polycarbonate waveguides with thin-film coatings of Ag-AgI were fabricated by liquid-phase chemistry methods. These hollow waveguides, which have bore sizes ranging from 500 to 2000 microm and lengths as long as 2 m, are transmissive from 2 to more than 20 microm. The lowest loss of 0.02 dB/m was obtained for a straight 2000 microm bore guide at 10.6 microm. This is to our knowledge the lowest loss measured for any IR fiber at CO2 laser wavelengths. The bending losses were found to increase as 1/R, where R is the radius of the bend. These waveguides were able to withstand 18 W of CO2 laser input power for bore sizes greater than 1000 microm.

All-fiber-optic infrared multispectral radiometer for measurements of temperature and emissivity of graybodies at near-room temperature

An all-fiber-optic infrared multispectral radiometer for measurements of temperature and emissivity of graybodies at near-room temperature was constructed. Different spectral regions in the radiometer were obtained by use of hollow glass waveguides (HGWs) as filters. Using HGWs instead of bulk filters was advantageous because each HGW can be used as two different spectral filters when a dual-band IR detector is used. In addition, HGWs are much cheaper than the bulk IR filters that are usually used in such applications. For one graybody with a mean emissivity of 0.71, the estimated mean errors obtained for sample temperature, ambient temperature, and sample emissivity for all measured temperatures were 0.50% (approximately 1.65 K), 0.48% (approximately 1.4 K), and 7.3% (approximately 0.052) respectively. For a second graybody with a mean emissivity of 0.8 the estimated mean errors were 0.35% (approximately 1.2 K), 0.48% (approximately 1.4 K), and 5.0% (approximately 0.04), respectively.

Silver-coated hollow-glass waveguide for applications at 800 nm

A 250-microm-bore size and 50-cm-length hollow-glass waveguide (HGW) coated with a thin film of silver has been used to transport laser pulses at 800 nm from a Ti:sapphire oscillator. The silver film is deposited by a liquid-phase process. The measured transmission of this silver-coated HGW is 95%, which is considerably higher than the transmission of HGWs with no coating, as reported by other groups. The image of the output beam taken at different distances from the fiber output shows that a single HE11 mode couples to free-space modes from the exit of the fiber. Considerable spectral broadening can be obtained with high-intensity femtosecond pulse when this waveguide is filled with argon. This HGW can be used for such applications as beam transport and optical-pulse compression.
