Rotational and angular distributions of NO products from NO-Rg (Rg = He, Ne, Ar) complex photodissociation

We present the results of an investigation into the rotational and angular distributions of the NO à state fragment following photodissociation of the NO-He, NO-Ne, and NO-Ar van der Waals complexes excited via the à ← X̃ transition. For each complex, the dissociation is probed for several values of Ea, the available energy above the dissociation threshold. For NO-He, the Ea values probed were 59, 172, and 273 cm(-1); for NO-Ne they were 50 and 166 cm(-1); and for NO-Ar they were 44, 94, 194, and 423 cm(-1). The NO à state rotational distributions arising from NO-He are cold, with most products in low angular momentum states. NO-Ne leads to broader NO rotational distributions but they do not extend to the maximum possible given the energy available. In the case of NO-Ar, the distributions extend to the maximum allowed at that energy and show the unusual shapes associated with the rotational rainbow effect reported in previous studies. This is the only complex for which a rotational rainbow effect is observed at the chosen Ea values. Product angular distributions have also been measured for the NO à photodissociation product for the three complexes. NO-He produces nearly isotropic fragments, but the anisotropy parameter, β, for NO-Ne and NO-Ar photofragments shows a surprising change in sign from negative to positive as Ea increases within the unstructured excitation profile. Franck-Condon selection of a broader distribution of geometries including more linear geometries at lower excitation energies and more T-shaped geometries at higher energies can account for the changing recoil anisotropy. Two-dimensional wavepacket calculations are reported to model the rotational state distributions and the bound-continuum absorption spectra.

Perspective: Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage: The status after 25 years

The first presentation of the STIRAP (stimulated Raman adiabatic passage) technique with proper theoretical foundation and convincing experimental data appeared 25 years ago, in the May 1st, 1990 issue of The Journal of Chemical Physics. By now, the STIRAP concept has been successfully applied in many different fields of physics, chemistry, and beyond. In this article, we comment briefly on the initial motivation of the work, namely, the study of reaction dynamics of vibrationally excited small molecules, and how this initial idea led to the documented success. We proceed by providing a brief discussion of the physics of STIRAP and how the method was developed over the years, before discussing a few examples from the amazingly wide range of applications which STIRAP now enjoys, with the aim to stimulate further use of the concept. Finally, we mention some promising future directions.

Laser spark ignition of premixed methane-air mixtures: parameter measurements and determination of key factors for ultimate ignition results

In this study, we present an experimental investigation of the parameters of the laser spark ignition of premixed methane-air mixtures and the determination of the key factors for the ultimate ignition result. Ignition is achieved in a mesh honeycomb burner using the 1064 nm output of a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd : YAG) laser. All pertinent laser ignition parameters, including the minimum ignition energy, the ignition time and blow out time, and the effects that the variation of experimental conditions, such as the spark energy, ignition position, equivalence ratio (ER), and flow rate, have on these parameters have been addressed systematically. To identify the key factors for the ultimate result of laser ignition, several parameters of the ignition processes are measured simultaneously, with an emphasis given to the temporal behavior of the hydroxyl (OH) radicals in relation to the data regarding the spark energy and the local ER. A clear finding of the study is that successful ignition events are always related to higher OH radical photon emissions, considered to be proportional to the concentration level of the OH radicals present, thus indicating a direct link between the OH level at early times (on a microsecond scale) and the ultimate result of laser ignition. Two-dimensional correlation plots of the spark energy, local ER, and OH radical photon count at early times with the ultimate results of laser ignition indicate that the spark energy and local ER do not play a critical role in determining the success or failure of the ignition and that the OH concentration in the early time range is the key factor in determining the final fate of laser ignition. Finally, on the basis of the results obtained here and in the existing literature, some considerations of the mechanism of laser ignition are presented.

Analysis of time-resolved superposed atomic hydrogen Balmer lines and molecular diatomic carbon spectra

We present analysis of superposition spectra following laser-induced breakdown (LIB) of methane. Both hydrogen-beta and hydrogen-gamma lines contain discernible contributions from diatomic carbon emissions for time delays of 1 to 2 μs from pulsed, 8 ns, infrared Nd:YAG laser radiation LIB. Analysis of the atomic lines and molecular C(2) spectra reveal electron and molecular excitation temperatures of typically 13,000 and 5000 K, respectively.

Computation of AlO B2Σ+ → X2Σ+ emission spectra

Application of molecular spectroscopy to analytical chemistry usually requires accurate description of the particular transition of interest. In this communication we describe the creation of a list of spectral lines. Following the introduction and definition of the line strength, we present a recipe for computation of diatomic-line-strengths, including the Hönl-London factor and electric dipole line strength for each spectral line. The diatomic eigenfunction is discussed including Hund's case basis functions. In our data tables we prefer use of Hund's case (a) basis, and we apply the usual Born-Oppenheimer approximation for the electronic-vibrational strengths. This allows us to generate the table of line strengths that we frequently apply for spectroscopic temperature determination. Using these line-strength tables, we present theoretical AlO emission spectra for the B-X system of AlO. These emission spectra are computed for temperatures of 3000 and 6000 K and for typical spectroscopic resolution used in laser-induced optical breakdown studies.

The dissociation of NO-Ar(A) from around threshold to 200 cm(-1) above threshold

We report an investigation of the dissociation of A state NO-Ar at energies from 23 cm(-1) below the dissociation energy to 200 cm(-1) above. The NO product rotational distributions show population in states that are not accessible with the energy available for excitation from the NO ground state. This effect is observed at photon energies from below the dissociation energy up to approximately 100 cm(-1) above it. Translational energy distributions, extracted from velocity map images of individual rotational levels of the NO product, reveal contributions from excitation of high energy NO-Ar X states at all the excess energies probed, although this diminishes with increasing photon energy and is quite small at 200 cm(-1), the highest energy studied. These translational energy distributions show that there are contributions arising from population in vibrational levels up to the X state dissociation energy. We propose that the reason such sparsely populated levels contribute to the observed dissociation is a considerable increase in the transition moment, via the Franck-Condon factor associated with these highly excited states, which arises because of the quite different geometries in the NO-Ar X and A states. This effect is likely to arise in other systems with similarly large geometry changes.

Intense SrF radical beam for molecular cooling experiments

We have developed a continuous SrF radical beam for the loading of helium buffer gas cooling. The SrF molecules are efficiently generated by high-temperature chemical reaction of the solid precursor SrF(2) with boron in a graphite oven. The beam properties are characterized with laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopic method. We obtain a molecular flux of up to 2.1x10(15) sr(-1) s(-1) at the detection region for all rotational states. The dependence of the flux on oven temperature suggests that even higher flux is possible if a higher temperature in the oven is achieved.
