Abstract
The purpose of this review is to bring to the attention of the wider research community how two quite different optical sensory techniques were integrated resulting in a sensor device of exceptional sensitivity with wide ranging capability. Both authors have collaborated over a 20 year period, each researching initially surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and optical fibre Bragg grating devices. Our individual research, funded in part by EPSRC and industry into these two areas, converged, resulting in a device that combined the ultra-sensitive working platform of SPR behavior with that of fibre Bragg grating development, which provided a simple method for SPR excitation. During this period, they developed a new approach to the fabrication of nano-structured metal coatings for plasmonic devices and demonstrated on fibre optic platform, which has created an ultra-sensitive optical sensing platform. Both authors believe that the convergence of these two areas will create opportunities in detection and sensing yet to be realised. Furthermore, giving the reader "sign-post" research articles to help to construct models to design sensors and to understand their experimental results.

Abstract
Surface plasmon resonance excitation with tilted fiber Bragg gratings has been typically studied using gold films to target biochemical sensing applications. However, surface plasmons can be excited on other metal coatings as well. In this work, plasmonic optical fiber grating platforms are developed using palladium films. Since the optical properties of this metal differ from the ones of gold, simulations are carried out to define the optimal thickness. Due to the phase transition of palladium in the presence of hydrogen, intensity changes in the optical transmission of the devices are produced. It is demonstrated that these platforms can be used for hydrogen detection at concentrations way below the lower explosive limit.

Abstract
The fiber geometry, fiber parameters and mode-guiding properties are crucial for realizing high-performance fiber-based sensors. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a few-mode fiber (FMF)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor. The FMF-SPR sensor was fabricated via side-polishing a few-mode fiber and coating a thin layer of gold film, on the basis of the optimization of fiber geometry, thickness of the gold film and mode selection, which were performed with the finite element method. The refractive index (RI) sensing performance of three such sensors with different residual fiber thicknesses were investigated. In the RI range from 1.333 to 1.404, the highest sensitivity up to 4903 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 46.1 RIU-1 are achieved. For testing the bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution, an averaged BSA RI sensitivity of 6328 nm/RIU and an averaged BSA concentration sensitivity of 1.17 nm/(mg/ml) are realized. Benefiting from only a few modes supported in the FMF, a smaller line-width of the SPR spectrum is obtained, which further results in a higher figure of merit (FOM). Moreover, when combined with the superiority of the mode-multiplexing technology brought by the FMF, the FMF-SPR sensors may find applications in biochemical analysis with high performance and high throughputs.

Abstract
A novel immunosensor for detecting Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was developed using excessively tilted fiber grating (Ex-TFG) coated with gold nanospheres (AuNs). AuNs were coated on the Ex-TFG surface via Au-S bonds using 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), and the activated staphylococcal protein A (SPA) was linked to AuNs by covalent bonds via cysteamine. AuNs greatly enhanced the impact of the analyte on the fiber cladding mode through the local surface Plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, thus improving the detection limit and sensitivity of the immunosensor. Meanwhile, SPA enhanced the bioactivity of anti-NDV monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), thus promoting the effectiveness of specific binding events on the fiber surface. Immunoassays were performed by monitoring the resonance wavelength shift of the proposed sensor under NDV samples containing different particle amounts. Specificity was assessed, and clinical tests for NDV were performed by contrast experiments. Experimental results showed that the detection limit for NDV was about 5~10 times improved compared to that of reference Ex-TFG without AuN treatment. Moreover, the novel biosensor was reusable and could potentially be applied in clinic.

Abstract
In this study, we propose and investigate a novel grating-assisted surface plasmon resonance (SPR) platform based on a silver coated long period fiber grating having a photosensitive cladding (C-LPFG). We show that the SPR mode is transited from the higher EH mode with an effective refractive index (ERI) close to that of the surrounding refractive index (SRI) and is highly sensitive to a change in the SRI. Compared with a conventional SPR sensor, a much higher sensitivity is obtained for the novel C-LPFG-based SPR sensor. The sensitivity can be further improved by reducing the fiber diameter. The numerical results show that the highest local sensitivity, which can be as high as ∼4900 nm/RIU, and the corresponding resolution of ∼2.04×10(-6) RIU are achieved for the reduced silver coated C-LPFG sensor. Moreover, the Q-factor and the figure of merit exhibit better characteristics than those of the conventional LPFG-based SPR sensor. Our findings provide insight into the C-LPFG-based SPR platform being a potentially important area to explore for biochemical sensing.

Abstract
Novel surface plasmonic optical fiber sensors have been fabricated using multiple coatings deposited on a lapped section of a single mode fiber. UV laser irradiation processing with a phase mask produces a nano-scaled surface relief grating structure resembling nano-wires. The resulting individual corrugations produced by material compaction are approximately 20 μm long with an average width at half maximum of 100 nm and generate localized surface plasmons. Experimental data are presented that show changes in the spectral characteristics after UV processing, coupled with an overall increase in the sensitivity of the devices to surrounding refractive index. Evidence is presented that there is an optimum UV dosage (48 joules) over which no significant additional optical change is observed. The devices are characterized with regards to change in refractive index, where significantly high spectral sensitivities in the aqueous index regime are found, ranging up to 4000 nm/RIU for wavelength and 800 dB/RIU for intensity.

Abstract
A simple and high sensitive method employing a hybrid long period grating (LPG)/chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) for refractive index (RI) measurements is proposed and investigated experimentally. The wide wavelength range of backward cladding modes are excited through the coupling and recoupling between LPG and CFBG. Experimental results indicate that the recoupled cladding modes between LPG and CFBG and core mode are modulated by the surrounding RI and highly sensitive RI measurements can be achieved by simply measuring the reflected intensity changes of the recoupled cladding modes and core mode.

Abstract
We present a simple refractive index sensor based on a step-index fiber with a hollow micro-channel running parallel to its core. This channel becomes waveguiding when filled with a liquid of index greater than silica, causing sharp dips to appear in the transmission spectrum at wavelengths where the glass-core mode phase-matches to a mode of the liquid-core. The sensitivity of the dip-wavelengths to changes in liquid refractive index is quantified and the results used to study the dynamic flow characteristics of fluids in narrow channels. Potential applications of this fiber microstructure include measuring the optical properties of liquids, refractive index sensing, biophotonics and studies of fluid dynamics on the nanoscale.

Abstract
A miniature surface plasmon resonance sensor is fabricated from a gold-coated standard optical fiber with an in-core tilted fiber Bragg grating fabricated by UV exposure. The sensor has a measured refractive index sensitivity of 571.5 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) at constant temperature. We show here that the intrinsic temperature sensitivity of this device is reduced to less than 6.3 pm/degrees C (between 23 degrees C and 59 degrees C) when measurements are referenced to a core mode reflection resonance of the grating. This residual sensitivity is essentially that of the 50 nm thick deposited gold layer but it is bigger by one order of magnitude than the expected value (0.51 pm/degrees C) for a gold-water interface.

Abstract
A full vector complex coupled mode theory (CMT) for the analysis of tilted fiber gratings is presented. With the combination of the perfectly matched layer (PML) and the perfectly reflecting boundary (PRB), the continuous radiation modes are well represented by a set of discrete complex modes. Simulation of coupling to radiation modes is greatly simplified and may be treated in the same fashion as guided modes. Numerical results of the tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) with outer-cladding index equal, lower and higher than that of the inner-cladding indicate that the complex coupled mode approach is highly effective in the simulation of couplings to cladding and radiation modes in tilted fiber gratings. The reflective TFBGs are investigated by the proposed approach in detail.

Abstract
A novel in-fiber structure for power-referenced refractometry with the capability to measure surrounding refractive index (SRI) as low as 1.33 is proposed and demonstrated. A short optical fiber stub containing a weakly tilted Bragg grating is spliced to another fiber with a large lateral offset. The reflection from this structure occurs in two well-defined wavelength bands, the Bragg reflected core mode and the cladding modes. The cladding modes reflect different amounts of power as the SRI changes, while the core-mode reflection from the same weakly tilted FBG remains unaffected by the SRI. The power reflected in the core mode band can be used as a reliable reference to cancel out any possible power fluctuations. The proposed refractometer with improved sensitivity for low SRI measurement together with the tip-reflection sensing feature, is a good candidate for sensing in chemical and biological applications.

Abstract
A novel structure in which a short optical fiber stub containing a weakly tilted Bragg grating is spliced to another slightly offset fiber. The total power reflected from this structure is independent of temperature and occurs in two well-defined wavelength bands, only one of which reflects a different amount of power as the fiber stub bends or vibrates. The smart sensing structure presents an extremely high sensitivity for microbending, and its frequency response has been tested to higher than 2 kHz so far in temperature-immune vibration measurements via cost-effective power detection.
