Investigation of optical fibers for high-repetition-rate, ultraviolet planar laser-induced fluorescence of OH

Dual-modality optical coherence tomography and frequency-domain fluorescence lifetime imaging microscope system for intravascular imaging

SIGNIFICANCE

Detailed biochemical and morphological imaging of the plaque burdened coronary arteries holds the promise of improved understanding of atherosclerosis plaque development, ultimately leading to better diagnostics and therapies.

AIM

Development of a dual-modality intravascular catheter supporting swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) and frequency-domain fluorescence lifetime imaging (FD-FLIM) of endogenous fluorophores with UV excitation.

APPROACH

We instituted a refined approach to endoscope development that combines simulation in a commercial ray tracing program, fabrication, and a measurement method for optimizing ball-lens performance. With this approach, we designed and developed a dual-modality catheter endoscope based on a double-clad fiber supporting OCT through the core and fluorescence collection through the first cladding. We varied the relative percent of UV excitation launched into the core and first cladding to explore the potential resolution improvement for FD-FLIM. The developed catheter endoscope was optically characterized, including measurement of spatial resolution and fluorescent lifetimes of standard fluorophores. Finally, the system was demonstrated on fresh ex vivo human coronary arteries.

RESULTS

The developed endoscope was shown to have optical performance similar to predictions derived from the simulation approach. The FLIM resolution can be improved by over a factor of 4 by primarily illuminating through the core rather than the first cladding. However, time-dependent solarization losses need to be considered when choosing the relative percentage. We ultimately chose to illuminate with 7% of the power transmitting through the core. The resulting catheter endoscope had 40-μm lateral resolution for OCT and <100  μm lateral resolution for FD-FLIM. Images of ex vivo coronary arteries are consistent with expectations based on histopathology.

CONCLUSIONS

The results demonstrate that our approach for endoscope simulation produces reliable predictions of endoscope performance. Simulation results guided our development of a multimodal OCT/FD-FLIM catheter imaging system for investigating atherosclerosis in coronary arteries.

All Fiber-Coupled OH Planar Laser-Induced-Fluorescence (OH-PLIF)-Based Two-Dimensional Thermometry

Two-color, planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF)-based two-dimensional (2D) thermometry techniques for reacting flows, which are typically developed in the laboratory conditions, face a stiff challenge in their practical implementation in harsh environments such as combustion rigs. In addition to limited optical access, the critical experimental conditions (i.e., uncontrolled humidity, vibration, and large thermal gradients) often restrict sensitive laser system operation and cause difficulties maintaining beam-overlap. Thus, an all fiber-coupled, two-color OH-PLIF system has been developed, employing two long optical fibers allowing isolation of the laser and signal-collection systems. Two OH-excitation laser beams (∼283 nm and ∼286 nm) are delivered through a common 6 m long, 400 µm core, deep ultraviolet (UV)-enhanced multimode fiber. The fluorescence signal (∼310 nm) is collected by a 3 m long, UV-grade imaging fiber. Proof-of-principle temperature measurements are demonstrated in atmospheric pressure, near adiabatic, CH₄/O₂/N₂ jet flames. The effects of the excitation pulse interval on fiber transmission are investigated. The proof-of-principle measurements show significant promise for thermometry in harsh environments such as gas turbine engine tests.

Fiber-coupled ultrashort-pulse-laser-based electronic-excitation tagging velocimetry

Transmission of intense ultrashort laser pulses through hollow-core fibers (HCFs) is investigated for molecular-tagging velocimetry. A low-vacuumed HCF beam-delivery system is developed to transmit high-peak-power pulses. Vacuum pressure effects on transmission efficiency and nonlinear effects at the fiber output are studied for 100 ps and 100 fs laser beams. With a 0.1 bar vacuum in the fiber, transmission efficiency increases by ∼30%, while spectral broadening is reduced. A 1 m long, 1 mm core metal-dielectric-coated HCF can transmit ∼45  mJ/pulse and ∼2.9  mJ/pulse for 100 ps laser pulses (at 532 nm) and 100 fs laser pulses (at 810 nm), respectively. Proof-of-principle, single-laser-shot, fiber-coupled, ps and fs laser-based, nitrogen electronic-excitation tagging velocimetry is demonstrated in a free jet. Flow velocities are measured at 200 kHz to capture high-frequency flow events.

Characterization of linearity and uniformity of fiber-based endoscopes for 3D combustion measurements

This work reports the application of fiber-based endoscopes (FBEs) for instantaneous three-dimensional (3D) flow and combustion measurements, with an emphasis on characterizing the linearity and uniformity of the FBEs and exploring their potential for obtaining quantitative measurements. Controlled experiments were performed using a uniform illuminator to characterize the linearity and uniformity of the FBEs. Based on such characterization, 3D instantaneous measurements of flames were demonstrated by a combined use of FBEs and tomography. To obtain 3D flame measurement, 3D tomographic reconstructions were made from multiple projections of the target flames collected from various orientations by the FBEs. The results illustrate the potential of FBEs to obtain quantitative 3D flow and combustion measurements and also the advantages FBEs offer, including overcoming optical access restrictions and equipment cost.

High power fiber delivery for laser ignition applications

The present contribution provides a concise review of high power fiber delivery research for laser ignition applications. The fiber delivery requirements are discussed in terms of exit energy, intensity, and beam quality. Past research using hollow core fibers, solid step-index fibers, and photonic crystal and bandgap fibers is summarized. Recent demonstrations of spark delivery using large clad step-index fibers and Kagome photonic bandgap fibers are highlighted.
