Decomposition of group-velocity-locked-vector-dissipative solitons and formation of the high-order soliton structure by the product of their recombination

Operating Vector Solitons with Chirped Sech Pulse Shapes

In this paper, we report the theoretical results about operating vector solitons with chirped sech pulse shapes. In the operation, the shapes of temporal pulses and corresponding optical spectra in orthogonal directions will change, which are based on soliton parameters. When input orthogonal pulses have the same central wavelength of 1064 nm, the shift from the central wavelength always occurs for orthogonal pulses. When input orthogonal pulses have different central wavelengths of 1063 nm and 1065 nm, output pulse shapes and optical spectra with obvious multiple peak/dip structures can be achieved in orthogonal directions. Our theoretical results are meaningful for the study of vector soliton dynamics and have potential applications in optical communication and optical sensing.

Vector soliton dynamics in a high-repetition-rate fiber laser

The existence of vector solitons that arise from the birefringence nature of optical fibers has been increasingly of interest for the stability of mode-locked fiber lasers, particularly for those operating in the high-fundamental-repetition-rate regime, where a large amount of fiber birefringence is required to restore the phase relation between the orthogonally polarized vector solitons, resulting in stable mode-locking free of polarization rotation. These vector solitons can exhibit diverse time-varying polarization dynamics, which prevent industrial and scientific applications requiring stable and uniform pulse trains at high fundamental repetition rates. This pressing issue, however, has so far been rarely studied. To this end, here we theoretically and experimentally dissect the formation of vector solitons in a GHz-repetition-rate fiber laser and investigate effective methods for suppressing roundtrip-to-roundtrip polarization dynamics. Our numerical model can predict both dynamic and stable regimes of high-repetition-rate mode-locking by varying the amount of fiber birefringence, resulting in the polarization rotation vector soliton (PRVS) and linearly polarized soliton (LPS), respectively. These dynamic behaviors are further studied by using an analytical approach. Interestingly, our theoretical results indicate a cavity-induced locking effect, which can be a complementary soliton trapping mechanism for the co-propagating solitons. Finally, these theoretical predications are experimentally verified, and we obtain both PRVS and LPS by adjusting the intracavity fiber birefringence.

Manipulation of group-velocity-locked vector dissipative solitons and properties of the generated high-order vector soliton structure

Details of various composites of the projections originated from a fundamental group-velocity-locked vector dissipative soliton (GVLVDS) are both experimentally and numerically explored. By combining the projections from the orthogonal polarization components of the GVLVDS, a high-order vector soliton structure with a double-humped pulse profile along one polarization and a single-humped pulse profile along the orthogonal polarization can be observed. Moreover, by de-chirping the composite double-humped pulse, the time separation between the two humps is reduced from 15.36 ps to 1.28 ps, indicating that the frequency chirp of the GVLVDS contributes significantly to the shaping of the double-humped pulse profile.
