Fano resonance formula for lossy two-port systems

We provide a modified Fano resonance formula applicable to dissipative two-port resonance systems. Based on a generic coupled-resonator model, the formula embodies loss-related correction terms and fundamental resonance parameters that can be determined by an analytic method or experimentally as opposed to finding phenomenological parameters by fitting to numerical results. The theory applies physically meaningful resonance parameters including resonance frequency, total decay rates, and partial radiation probabilities. For example, it shows that the classic Fano shape parameter q is given directly in terms of the phase difference between the resonant and non-resonant transmission pathways. Our new resonance formula quantitatively expresses the resonance spectra pertaining to modal nanophotonic and surface-plasmonic thin-film structures as verified by comparing with exact numerical models.

Observation and differentiation of unique high-Q optical resonances near zero wave vector in macroscopic photonic crystal slabs

We demonstrate and distinguish experimentally the existence of a special type of Fano resonances at k≈0 in a macroscopic two-dimensional photonic crystal slab. We fabricate a square lattice array of holes in a silicon nitride layer and perform an angular resolved spectral analysis of the various Fano resonances. We elucidate their radiation behavior using temporal coupled-mode theory and symmetry considerations. The unique simplicity of this system whereby an ultralong lifetime delocalized electromagnetic field can exist above the surface and consequently easily interact with added matter, provides exciting new opportunities for the study of light and matter interaction.

Multiple wavelengths filtering of light through inner resonances

We show that by using the internal resonances of a grating, it is possible to design a filter working for multiple wavelengths. We study the characteristics of the device with respect to the constituting parameters and we propose a realization process.

Tuning a two-dimensional photonic crystal resonance via optical carrier injection

We report on wide wavelength tuning through optical injection of carriers of a photonic resonance observed in reflectivity at 1543 nm in an InP-based two-dimensional photonic crystal slab. An 8-nm blueshift, which represents 20 times the resonance linewidth, is observed when a 4-kW/cm2 intense optical pump is incident on the sample. An analytical model that we developed, based on a coupled-mode nonlinear approach, allows us to describe this phenomenon in detail.
