Fusion and merging of multispectral images with use of multiscale fundamental forms

Contrast-enhanced fusion of multi-sensor images using subband-decomposed multiscale retinex

In this paper, we propose a novel pixel-level multi-sensor image fusion algorithm with simultaneous contrast enhancement. In order to accomplish both image fusion and contrast enhancement simultaneously, we suggest a modified framework of the subband-decomposed multiscale retinex (SDMSR), our previous contrast enhancement algorithm. This framework is based on a fusion strategy that reflects the multiscale characteristics of the SDMSR well. We first apply two complementary intensity transfer functions to source images in order to effectively utilize hidden information in both shadows and highlights in the fusion process. We then decompose retinex outputs into nearly nonoverlapping spectral subbands. The decomposed retinex outputs are then fused subband-by-subband, by using global weighting as well as local weighting to overcome the limitations of the pixel-based fusion approach. After the fusion process, we apply a space-varying subband gain to each fused subband-decomposed retinex output according to the subband characteristic so that the contrast of the fused image can be effectively enhanced. In addition, in order to effectively manage artifacts and noise, we make the degree of enhancement of fused details adjustable by improving a detail adjustment function. From experiments with various multi-sensor image pairs, the results clearly demonstrate that even if source images have poor contrast, the proposed algorithm makes it possible to generate a fused image with highly enhanced contrast while preserving visually salient information contained in the source images.

Satellite image fusion based on principal component analysis and high-pass filtering

This paper presents an integrated method for the fusion of satellite images. Several commercial earth observation satellites carry dual-resolution sensors, which provide high spatial resolution or simply high-resolution (HR) panchromatic (pan) images and low-resolution (LR) multi-spectral (MS) images. Image fusion methods are therefore required to integrate a high-spectral-resolution MS image with a high-spatial-resolution pan image to produce a pan-sharpened image with high spectral and spatial resolutions. Some image fusion methods such as the intensity, hue, and saturation (IHS) method, the principal component analysis (PCA) method, and the Brovey transform (BT) method provide HR MS images, but with low spectral quality. Another family of image fusion methods, such as the high-pass-filtering (HPF) method, operates on the basis of the injection of high frequency components from the HR pan image into the MS image. This family of methods provides less spectral distortion. In this paper, we propose the integration of the PCA method and the HPF method to provide a pan-sharpened MS image with superior spatial resolution and less spectral distortion. The experimental results show that the proposed fusion method retains the spectral characteristics of the MS image and, at the same time, improves the spatial resolution of the pan-sharpened image.

Some trends in microscope image processing

The present review tries to identify some trends among the multitude of ways followed by image processing developments in the field of microscopy. Nine topics were selected. They cover the fields of: signal processing, statistical analysis, artificial intelligence, three-dimensional microscopy, multidimensional microscopy, multimodality microscopy, theory, simulation and multidisciplinarity. A specific topic is dedicated to a trend towards semi-automation instead of full automation in image processing.

An orthogonal wavelet representation of multivalued images

In this paper, a new orthogonal wavelet representation of multivalued images is presented. The idea for this representation is based on the concept of maximal gradient of multivalued images. This concept is generalized from gradients toward linear vector operators in the image plane with equal components along rows and columns. Using this generalization, the pyramidal dyadic wavelet transform algorithm using quadrature mirror filters is modified to be applied to multivalued images. This results in a representation of a single image, containing multiscale detail information from all component images involved. This representation leads to multiple applications ranging from multispectral image fusion to color and multivalued image enhancement, denoising and segmentation. In this paper, the representation is applied for fusion of images. More in particular, we introduce a scheme to merge high spatial resolution greylevel images with low spatial resolution multivalued images to improve spatial resolution of the latter while preserving spectral resolution. Two applications are studied: demosaicing of color images and merging of multispectral remote sensing images.
