Grating configurations to compress extreme-ultraviolet ultrashort pulses

It is here discussed the design of ultrafast extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) grating compressors that can be used to condition the spectral phase of ultrashort chirped pulses to compensate for the phase chirp and get closer to the Fourier limit. We discuss the two configurations that can be used to realize the compressor, the classical diffraction mount, and the off-plane one. The concept is applied to the realization of a XUV compressor with applications to free-electron lasers.

Suppression of driving laser in high harmonic generation with a microchannel plate

Separating the infrared driving laser from the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses after high-order harmonic generation has been a long-standing difficulty. In this Letter, we propose and demonstrate that the driving laser can be blocked by simply installing a microchannel plate (MCP) into the beam line. In addition to its high damage threshold, the MCP filter also transmits photons over the entire XUV region. This paves the way for attosecond pulse generation with unprecedented bandwidth.

Compression methods for XUV attosecond pulses

Attosecond extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses generated in gases via high-order harmonic generation typically carry an intrinsic positive chirp. Compression of such pulses has been demonstrated using metallic transmission filters, a method with very limited tunability. We compare here the compression achievable with a diffraction grating based method with that of metallic filters using simulated high harmonic waveforms in the transmission window of metal films.

Time-resolved EUV photoelectron spectroscopy of dissociating I2 by laser harmonics at 80 nm

Generation of single-order laser harmonics in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and the application to the time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of I(2) are demonstrated. The EUV pulses at 80 nm were generated from Kr as the 5th order harmonics of intense 400 nm laser pulses and then separated from other harmonic orders by a thin indium foil. The pump-probe photoelectron spectroscopy of I(2) in the B (3)Π(0(u)(+)) and B" (1)Π(1(u)) states excited by visible laser pulses at 490 nm showed a rapid increase in the yield of atomic iodine (~400 fs), reflecting the dissociation dynamics evolving simultaneously in the two excited states.
