Optical properties of biosynthesized nanoscaled Eu2O3 for red luminescence applications

Room temperature bio-engineered multifunctional carbonates for CO2 sequestration and valorization

This contribution reports, for the first time, on an entirely green bio-engineering approach for the biosynthesis of single phase crystalline 1-D nano-scaled calcite CaCO3. This was validated using H2O as the universal solvent and natural extract of Hyphaene thebaica fruit as an effective chelating agent. In this room temperature green process, CaCl2 and CO2 are used as the unique source of Ca and CO3 respectively in view of forming nano-scaled CaCO3 with a significant shape anisotropy and an elevated surface to volume ratio. In terms of novelty, and relatively to the reported scientific and patented literature in relation to the fabrication of CaCO3 by green nano-chemistry, the current cost effective room temperature green process can be singled out as per the following specificities: only water as universal solvent is used, No additional base or acid chemicals for pH control, No additional catalyst, No critical or supercritical CO2 usage conditions, Only natural extract of thebaica as a green effective chelating agent through its phytochemicals and proper enzematic compounds, room Temperature processing, atmospheric pressure processing, Nanoscaled size particles, and Nanoparticles with a significant shape anisotropy (1-D like nanoparticles). Beyond and in addition to the validation of the 1-D synthesis aspect, the bio-engineered CaCO3 exhibited a wide-ranging functionalities in terms of highly reflecting pigment, an effective nanofertilizer as well as a potential binder in cement industry.

Molecular docking study on europium nanoparticles and mussel adhesive protein for effective detection of latent fingerprints

Background: Reflecting on the difficulty of finding the evidence of latent fingerprints on wet and rough surfaces, scientists need to visualise those fingermarks without any background interference and stable adhesion of visualising material over the fingermark residues.Objective: To stabilize the interaction with the fingermarks, the synthesized nanoparticles were conjugated with a highly adhesive biopolymer, Mussel Adhesive Protein (MAP) which can effectively interact with fingerprint deposits.Material and Methods: Rare earth metal, europium oxide and nanoparticles were used as a visualisation material to get high contrast and reduced background interference-based fingerprints. To stabilise the interaction with the fingermarks, the synthesised nanoparticles were conjugated with highly adhesive biopolymer, Mussel Adhesive Protein (MAP) which can effectively interacts with fingerprint deposits. A molecular docking study was done using Auto-Dock to find the binding affinity between the metal nanoparticle and the protein. Further, the stability of the bioconjugated with fingerprint residues was analysed by protein-protein interaction study through patch dock and PDB Sum.Results: The docking analysis between europium and nanoparticles with MAP was found to be -8.77 kcal/mol and -47.49 kcal/mol respectively. Protein-protein interaction studies showed a highest affinity for dermcidin and keratin with a binding affinity of -16.76 kcal/mol and -24.76 kcal/mol respectively.Conclusions: The docking studies showed an efficient interaction between the synthesised molecules and the fingermark residues. Results of these interaction studies proved that this bio-conjugated complex can be explored for efficient visualisation of low intensified fingermarks.

On the Absorption and Photoluminescence Properties of Pure ZnSe and Co-Doped ZnSe:Eu3+/Yb3+ Crystals

Co-doped Zinc selenide (ZnSe) is a promising material because of a high photoluminescence efficiency and wide spectral range emission in the visible region. In this work, ZnSe and Eu3+/Yb3+ co-doped ZnSe crystals were grown by the chemical vapour transport method. Photoluminescence and optical measurements revealed the effect of trivalent rare earth Eu3+/Yb3+ ions on the emission of new lines with enhancement intensity. In the photoluminescence spectrum, some sharp and intense lines were observed that allow for the possibility of covering a broad emission range. Moreover, the optical measurement showed a lower bandgap compared to that of pure ZnSe bulk crystal. This material is suitable for developing optoelectronic devices, which can emit light in the visible and near infrared range with an improved emission efficiency and wide tunability.

Optics in Africa: introduction

Africa has a long history in optics, but decades of turmoil have seen optical science in Africa advance only slowly, punching far below its weight. But a younger generation of scientists hold promise for the brighter future, addressing continental issues with photonics. In this Feature Issue on Optics in Africa we capture some of the exciting optical research from across the continent in 51 research reports, covering both fundamental and applied topics. The issue is supplemented by invited review articles that offer authoritative perspectives on the historical development of key research fields, from early advances in lasers to present-day progress in photonic materials. To encourage the exploration of new research directions, the issue has several tutorial articles that lower the entry barrier for emerging researchers, while highlighting the scope of research on the continent and its international context.
