Image segmentation by nonlinear filtering of optical Hough transform

The identification and extraction (i.e., segmentation) of geometrical features is crucial in many tasks requiring image analysis. We present a method for the optical segmentation of features of interest from an edge enhanced image. The proposed method is based on the nonlinear filtering (implemented by the use of a spatial light modulator) of the generalized optical Hough transform and is capable of discriminating features by shape and by size. The robustness of the method against noise in the input, low contrast, or overlapping of geometrical features is assessed, and experimental validation of the working principle is presented.

Nonlinear optical properties of multipyrrole dyes

The nonlinear optical properties of a series of pyrrolic compounds consisting of BODIPY and aza-BODIPY systems are investigated using 532 nm nanosecond laser and the Z-scan technique. Results show that 3,5-distyryl extension of BODIPY to the red shifted MeO₂BODIPY dye has a dramatic impact on its nonlinear absorption properties changing it from a saturable absorber to an efficient reverse saturable absorbing material with a nonlinear absorption coefficient of 4.64 × 10^-10 m/W. When plotted on a concentration scale per mole of dye in solution MeO₂BODIPY far outperforms the recognized zinc(II) phthalocyanine dye and is comparable to that of zinc(II) tetraphenylporphyrin.

Ultrafast nonlinear mirrors with broad spectral and angular bandwidths in the visible spectral range

A novel nonlinear mirror structure is presented. A 23 nm-thick Au thin film separated from a 100 nm-thick Ag film by a dielectric spacer is used to drive the nonlinear optical response of the mirror. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of the mirror can be tuned by optimizing its layer thickness distribution. A figure-of-merit for the change in reflectance is derived for the nonlinear mirror and the nonlinear refractive index change of the Au layer is shown to be significantly enhanced in the mirror structure. The ultrafast reflectance change of the nonlinear mirror, studied using femtosecond white-light continuum pump-probe experiments, shows an extremely large magnitude and is both spectrally and angularly broad in the visible range.

All-optical and polarization-independent spatial filter based on a vertically-aligned polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film with a photoconductive layer

An all-optical and polarization-independent spatial filter was developed in a vertically-aligned (VA) polymer-stabilized liquid crystal (PSLC) film with a photoconductive (PC) layer. This spatial filter is based on the effect of light on the conductivity of PC layer: high (low)-intensity light makes the conductivity of the PC layer high (low), resulting in a low (high) threshold voltage of the PC-coated VA PSLC cell. Experimental results indicate that this spatial filter is a high-pass filter with low optical-power consumption (about 1.11 mW/cm(2)) in an optical Fourier transform system. The high-pass characteristic was confirmed by simulation. Accordingly, the all-optical and polarization-independent spatial filter can be used to enhance the edges of images.

Optical Fourier techniques for medical image processing and phase contrast imaging

This paper briefly reviews the basics of optical Fourier techniques (OFT) and applications for medical image processing as well as phase contrast imaging of live biological specimens. Enhancement of microcalcifications in a mammogram for early diagnosis of breast cancer is the main focus. Various spatial filtering techniques such as conventional 4f filtering using a spatial mask, photoinduced polarization rotation in photosensitive materials, Fourier holography, and nonlinear transmission characteristics of optical materials are discussed for processing mammograms. We also reviewed how the intensity dependent refractive index can be exploited as a phase filter for phase contrast imaging with a coherent source. This novel approach represents a significant advance in phase contrast microscopy.
