Observation of nonlinear optical phenomena in air and fused silica using a 100 GW, 1.54 mum source

Optical Kerr effect field measurements and ad hoc engineering model comparisons

Optical Kerr effects induced by the propagation of high peak-power laser beams through real atmospheres have been a topic of interest to the nonlinear optics community for several decades. This paper proposes a new analytical model for predicting the filamentation/light channel onset distance in real atmospheres based on modulation instability model considerations. The normalized intensity increases exponentially as the beam propagates through the medium. It is hypothesized that this growth can be modeled as a weighted ratio of the Gaussian beam diameter at range to the lateral coherence radius and can be used to set the power ratio for an absorbing, turbulent, nonlinear media to estimate the beam collapse distance. Comparison of onset distance predictions with those found from computer simulation and deduced from field experiments will be presented. In addition, this model will be used with an analytical approach to quantify the expected radius of light channels resulting from self-focusing both with and without the production of a plasma filament. Finally, this paper will describe a set of 1.5-micron, variable focal length USPL field experiments. Comparisons of theoretical radius calculations to measurements from field experiments will be presented.

Giantically blue-shifted visible light in femtosecond mid-IR filament in fluorides

A giant blue shift (more than 3000 nm) of an isolated visible band of supercontinuum was discovered and studied in the single filament regime of Mid-IR femtosecond laser pulse at powers slightly exceeding critical power for self-focusing in fluorides. At the pulse central wavelength increasing from 3000 nm to 3800 nm the spectral maximum of the visible band is shifted from 570 nm and 520 nm up to 400 nm and 330 nm for BaF(2) and CaF(2), respectively, its spectral width (FWHM) being reduced from 50 - 70 nm to 14 nm. It is shown that the formation of this narrow visible wing is a result of the interference of the supercontinuum components in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime.

Ultrabroadband supercontinuum and third-harmonic generation in bulk solids with two optical-cycle carrier-envelope phase-stable pulses at 2 μm

We report on the generation of ultrabroadband supercontinuum (SC) by filamentation of two optical-cycle, carrier-envelope phase-stable pulses at 2 μm in fused silica, sapphire, CaF₂ and YAG. The SC spectra extend from 450 nm to more than 2500 nm, and their particular shapes depend on dispersive properties of the materials. Prior to spectral super-broadening, we observe third-harmonic generation, which occurs in the condition of large phase and group velocity mismatch and consists of free and driven components. A double-peaked third-harmonic structure coexists with the SC pulse as demonstrated by the numerical simulations and verified experimentally. The SC pulses have stable carrier envelope phase with short-term rms fluctuations of ∼ 300 mrad, as simultaneously measured in YAG crystal by f-2f and f-3f interferometry, where the latter makes use of intrinsic third-harmonic generation.

Anti-Stokes wing of femtosecond laser filament supercontinuum in fused silica

We have demonstrated that in the IR pulse filament the anomalous dispersion of fused silica leads to the formation of an isolated anti-Stokes wing (ASW), which is located in the visible region of the supercontinuum (SC). It is shown that the isolated ASW is formed by the interference of the light field of a SC undergoing anomalous group velocity dispersion.

Efficient third-harmonic generation through tailored IR femtosecond laser pulse filamentation in air

The process of third-harmonic generation during the filamentation of intense IR femtosecond laser pulses in air is investigated experimentally. It is shown that the introduction of a thin plasma string created by another femtosecond pulse, perpendicularly to the filament's path, dramatically reshapes the third-harmonic beam into a Bessel-like far-field distribution, while at the same time significantly enhances, up to 250 times, its conversion efficiency.
