Giant enhancement of band edge emission based on ZnO/TiO(2) nanocomposites

Photovoltaic Properties of ZnO Films Co-Doped with Mn and La to Enhance Solar Cell Efficiency

In the present investigation, ZnO films co-doped with Mn and La were synthesized by the sol–gel technique. XRD analysis revealed that ZnO had a hexagonal structure. Mixed hexagonal and cubic phases appeared in ZnO containing Mn (1%) and La (1.5%). The grain size, d-spacing, unit cell, lattice parameters, atomic packing fraction, volume, strain, crystallinity, and bond length of co-doped ZnO films were determined as a function of doped ion contents. Through UV analysis, it was found that pristine ZnO had E_g = 3.5 eV, and it decreased when increasing the doping concentration, reaching the minimum value for the sample with 1% Mn and 1% La. The optical parameters of the films, such as absorption, transmittance, dielectric constants, and refractive index, were also analyzed. DSSCs were fabricated using the prepared ZnO films. For pure ZnO film, the values were: efficiency = 0.69%, current density = 2.5 mAcm⁻², and open-circuit voltage = 0.56 V. When ZnO was co-doped with Mn and La, the efficiency increased significantly. DSSCs with a ZnO photoanode co-doped with 1% Mn and 1% La exhibited maximum values of J_sc = 4.28 mAcm⁻², V_oc = 0.6 V, and efficiency = 1.89%, which is 174% better than pristine ZnO-based DSSCs. This material is good for the electrode of perovskite solar cells.

Activity Enhancement of P25 Titanium Dioxide by Zinc Oxide for Photocatalytic Phenol Degradation

As a benchmark photocatalyst, P25 titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterial has been widely reported for its remarkable photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. However, approaches to further improve the photocatalytic activity of the P25 TiO2 are still required. In the present work, we reported the activity enhancement of the P25 TiO2 up to more than five times higher rate constant for phenol degradation when the P25 TiO2 was coupled with zinc oxide (ZnO). The composites were prepared by a physical mixing method of P25 TiO2 and ZnO with various weight ratios of 1:0.5, 1:1, and 1:2. The composite materials were then characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse-reflectance ultraviolet-visible (DR UV-vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and fluorescence spectroscopies. All the composites gave better activity than the P25 TiO2, in which the TiO2/ZnO 1:1 composite material exhibited the highest first-order reaction rate constant (0.43 h−1). This remarkable enhanced degradation rate was much higher than that of the unmodified TiO2 (0.08 h−1) and ZnO (0.13 h-1). The fluorescence study revealed that the electron-hole recombination on the P25 TiO2 could be suppressed by the ZnO, which would be the reason for such activity enhancement. A study on the effect of the scavenger showed that the hydroxyl radicals played a crucial role in the photocatalytic phenol degradation. Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Impact of Mn-dopant concentration in observing narrowing of band-gap, urbach tail and paramagnetism in anatase TiO2 nanocrystals

In addition to the numerous applications of Mn-doped TiO₂, it could be a potential candidate as a dilute magnetic semiconductor.

Synthesis of molybdenum oxide-titanium dioxide nanocomposites with ultrashort laser ablation in water

Nanocomposites of Molybdenum oxide (MoO₃) and Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) were synthesized with femtosecond laser ablation of the pelleted powder in water. The pressing with Cold Isostatic press (CIP) provides facile method for pelletization of the oxides mixture. With this method the nanocomposites can be synthesized without replacement of the target during laser ablation. After laser ablation in water the stable MoO₃-TiO₂ nanocomposites were synthesized. The morphology of the synthesized nanocomposites was investigated with transmission electron microscopy. While the band gap modifications of the synthesized nanocomposites were witnessed with UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analysis. Besides, the generated nanocomposites were used for photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications. The nanocomposites exhibit significant improvement in the rate of photo conversion and photodegradation as well.

Characterization and improved solar light activity of vanadium doped TiO2/diatomite hybrid catalysts

V-doped TiO2/diatomite composite photocatalysts with different vanadium concentrations were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method. The diatomite was responsible for the well dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles on the matrix and consequently inhibited the agglomeration. V-TiO2/diatomite hybrids showed red shift in TiO2 absorption edge with enhanced absorption intensity. Most importantly, the dopant energy levels were formed in the TiO2 bandgap due to V(4+) ions substituted to Ti(4+) sites. The 0.5% V-TiO2/diatomite photocatalyst displayed narrower bandgap (2.95 eV) compared to undoped sample (3.13 eV) and other doped samples (3.05 eV) with higher doping concentration. The photocatalytic activities of V doped TiO2/diatomite samples for the degradation of Rhodamine B under stimulated solar light illumination were significantly improved compared with the undoped sample. In our case, V(4+) ions incorporated in TiO2 lattice were responsible for increased visible-light absorption and electron transfer to oxygen molecules adsorbed on the surface of TiO2 to produce superoxide radicals ˙O2(-), while V(5+) species presented on the surface of TiO2 particles in the form of V2O5 contributed to e(-)-h(+) separation. In addition, due to the combination of diatomite as support, this hybrid photocatalyst could be separated from solution quickly by natural settlement and exhibited good reusability.

Effects of localized surface plasmons on the photoluminescence properties of Au-coated ZnO films

The ultraviolet (UV) emission from the Au-coated ZnO films was greatly enhanced and the visible emission was significantly suppressed compared with the un-coated ZnO films. Great changes in photoluminescence of ZnO films are attributed to the electron transfer between conduction band and defect levels through the localized surface plasmons. The increase of electron density in conduction band causes enhanced UV emission, while the decrease in electron density in defect level leads to the suppression of the visible emission. Such ZnO films with enhanced UV emission have potential applications in the highly efficient solid state emitters.

Selectively enhanced band gap emission in ZnO/Ag2O nanocomposites

A new composite consisting of ZnO nanorods decorated with Ag(2)O nanoparticles has been synthesized and characterized. It is found that the band gap emission of ZnO nanorods can be greatly enhanced by about 10 times, while the defect emission can be suppressed to the detection limit, simultaneously. The ratio between the band gap and defect emission reaches to an enhanced factor of about 600 times. The underlying mechanism is attributed to the combined effects of surface modification, band alignment, as well as charge transfer. Our approach provided here can be extended to many other semiconductors for creating nanocomposites with novel optical properties.

Giant white and blue light emission from Al(2)O(3) and ZnO nanocomposites

A new and general approach enabling us to amplify not only the bandgap emission of ZnO nanorods but also the defect emission of Al(2)O(3) is proposed. The light intensity of the band edge emission of ZnO nanorods can be improved by as much as 19 times after the decoration of Al(2)O(3) layers. Moreover, white light emission arising from Al(2)O(3) defects in ZnO/Al(2)O(3) nanostructures also shows a large enhancement factor of 12 times. Our new strategy offers an alternative possibility to create strong white and blue light-emitting devices.
