Automated correlation dimension analysis of optically injected solid state lasers

Wideband and high-dimensional chaos generation using optically pumped spin-VCSELs

We propose and numerically demonstrate wideband and high-dimensional chaos signal generation based on optically pumped spin-polarized vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (spin-VCSELs). Here, we focus on the chaotic characteristics of spin-VCSELs under two scenarios: one is a spin-VCSEL with optical feedback and the other is optical heterodyning the outputs of two free-running spin-VCSELs. Specifically, we systematically investigate the influence of some key parameters on the chaotic properties, i.e., bandwidth, spectral flatness (SF), time delay signature (TDS), correlation dimension (CD), and permutation entropy (PE), and reveal the route to enhance these properties simultaneously. Our simulation results demonstrate for the first time that spin-VCSELs with simple auxiliary configurations allow for chaos generation with desired properties, including effective bandwidth up to 30 GHz and above, no TDS of greater than 0.2, the flatness of 0.75 and above, and the high complexity/dimensionality over a wide range of parameters under both schemes. Therefore, our study may pave the way for potential applications requiring wideband and high-dimensional chaos.

Chaotic dimension enhancement by optical injection into a semiconductor laser under feedback

Optical injection into a chaotic laser under feedback is investigated for dimension enhancement. Although injecting a solitary laser is known to be low-dimensional, injecting the laser under feedback is found to enhance the correlation dimension D₂ in experiments. Using an exceptionally large data size with a very large reconstruction embedding dimension, efficient computation is enabled by averaging over many short segments to carefully estimate D₂. The dimension enhancement can be achieved together with time-delay signature suppression. The enhancement of D₂ as a fundamental geometric quantifier of attractors is useful in applications of chaos.

Mapping bifurcation structure and parameter dependence in quantum dot spin-VCSELs

We consider a modified version of the spin-flip model (SFM) that describes optically pumped quantum dot (QD) spin-polarized vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). Maps showing different dynamical regions and those consisting of various key bifurcations are constructed by direct numerical simulations and a numerical path continuation technique, respectively. A comparison between them clarifies the physical mechanism that governs the underlying dynamics as well as routes to chaos in QD spin-VCSELs. Detailed numerical simulations illustrate the role played by the capture rate from wetting layer (WL) to QD ground state, the gain parameter, and the amplitude-phase coupling. By tuning the aforementioned key parameters in turn we show how the dynamical regions evolve as a function of the intensity and polarization of the optical pump, as well as in the plane of the spin relaxation rate and linear birefringence rate, which is of importance in the design of spin lasers promising potential applications. By increasing the capture rate from WL to QD our simulation accurately describes the transition from the QD spin-VCSEL to the quantum well case, in agreement with a previous mathematical derivation, and thus validates the modified SFM equations.

Nonlinear dynamics of solitary and optically injected two-element laser arrays with four different waveguide structures: a numerical study

We study the nonlinear dynamics of solitary and optically injected two-element laser arrays with a range of waveguide structures. The analysis is performed with a detailed direct numerical simulation, where high-resolution dynamic maps are generated to identify regions of dynamic instability in the parameter space of interest. Our combined one- and two-parameter bifurcation analysis uncovers globally diverse dynamical regimes (steady-state, oscillation, and chaos) in the solitary laser arrays, which are greatly influenced by static design waveguiding structures, the amplitude-phase coupling factor of the electric field, i.e. the linewidth-enhancement factor, as well as the control parameter, e.g. the pump rate. When external optical injection is introduced to one element of the arrays, we show that the whole system can be either injection-locked simultaneously or display rich, different dynamics outside the locking region. The effect of optical injection is to significantly modify the nature and the regions of nonlinear dynamics from those found in the solitary case. We also show similarities and differences (asymmetry) between the oscillation amplitude of the two elements of the array in specific well-defined regions, which hold for all the waveguiding structures considered. Our findings pave the way to a better understanding of dynamic instability in large arrays of lasers.

Insights on correlation dimension from dynamics mapping of three experimental nonlinear laser systems

BACKGROUND

We have analysed large data sets consisting of tens of thousands of time series from three Type B laser systems: a semiconductor laser in a photonic integrated chip, a semiconductor laser subject to optical feedback from a long free-space-external-cavity, and a solid-state laser subject to optical injection from a master laser. The lasers can deliver either constant, periodic, pulsed, or chaotic outputs when parameters such as the injection current and the level of external perturbation are varied. The systems represent examples of experimental nonlinear systems more generally and cover a broad range of complexity including systematically varying complexity in some regions.

METHODS

In this work we have introduced a new procedure for semi-automatically interrogating experimental laser system output power time series to calculate the correlation dimension (CD) using the commonly adopted Grassberger-Proccacia algorithm. The new CD procedure is called the 'minimum gradient detection algorithm'. A value of minimum gradient is returned for all time series in a data set. In some cases this can be identified as a CD, with uncertainty.

FINDINGS

Applying the new 'minimum gradient detection algorithm' CD procedure, we obtained robust measurements of the correlation dimension for many of the time series measured from each laser system. By mapping the results across an extended parameter space for operation of each laser system, we were able to confidently identify regions of low CD (CD < 3) and assign these robust values for the correlation dimension. However, in all three laser systems, we were not able to measure the correlation dimension at all parts of the parameter space. Nevertheless, by mapping the staged progress of the algorithm, we were able to broadly classify the dynamical output of the lasers at all parts of their respective parameter spaces. For two of the laser systems this included displaying regions of high-complexity chaos and dynamic noise. These high-complexity regions are differentiated from regions where the time series are dominated by technical noise. This is the first time such differentiation has been achieved using a CD analysis approach.

CONCLUSIONS

More can be known of the CD for a system when it is interrogated in a mapping context, than from calculations using isolated time series. This has been shown for three laser systems and the approach is expected to be useful in other areas of nonlinear science where large data sets are available and need to be semi-automatically analysed to provide real dimensional information about the complex dynamics. The CD/minimum gradient algorithm measure provides additional information that complements other measures of complexity and relative complexity, such as the permutation entropy; and conventional physical measurements.

Complexity in pulsed nonlinear laser systems interrogated by permutation entropy

Permutation entropy (PE) has a growing significance as a relative measure of complexity in nonlinear systems. It has been applied successfully to measuring complexity in nonlinear laser systems. Here, PE and weighted permutation entropy (WPE) are discovered to show an unexpected inversion to higher values, when characterizing the complexity at the characteristic frequencies of nonlinear drivers in laser systems, for output power sequences which are pulsed. The cause of this inversion is explained and its presence can be used to identify when irregular dynamics transform into a fairly regular pulsed signal (with amplitude and timing jitter). When WPE is calculated from experimental output power time series from various nonlinear laser systems as a function of delay time, both the minimum value of WPE, and the width of the peak in the WPE plot are shown to be indicative of the level of amplitude variation and timing jitter present in the pulsed output. Links are made with analysis using simulated time series data with systematic variation in timing jitter and/or amplitude variations.

Stability of the nonlinear dynamics of an optically injected VCSEL

Automated protocols have been developed to characterize time series data in terms of stability. These techniques are applied to the output power time series of an optically injected vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) subject to varying injection strength and optical frequency detuning between master and slave lasers. Dynamic maps, generated from high resolution, computer controlled experiments, identify regions of dynamic instability in the parameter space.

Variable pulse repetition frequency output from an optically injected solid state laser

An optically injected solid state laser (OISSL) system is known to generate complex nonlinear dynamics within the parameter space of varying the injection strength of the master laser and the frequency detuning between the master and slave lasers. Here we show that within these complex nonlinear dynamics, a system which can be operated as a source of laser pulses with a pulse repetition frequency (prf) that can be continuously varied by a single control, is embedded. Generation of pulse repetition frequencies ranging from 200 kHz up to 4 MHz is shown to be achievable for an optically injected Nd:YVO4 solid state laser system from analysis of prior experimental and simulation results. Generalizing this to other optically injected solid state laser systems, the upper bound on the repetition frequency is of order the relaxation oscillation frequency for the lasers. The system is discussed in the context of prf versatile laser systems more generally. Proposals are made for the next generation of OISSLs that will increase understanding of the variable pulse repetition frequency operation, and determine its practical limitations. Such variable prf laser systems; both low powered, and, higher powered systems achieved using one or more optical power amplifier stages; have many potential applications from interrogating resonance behaviors in microscale structures, through sensing and diagnostics, to laser processing.

Nonlinear semiconductor lasers and amplifiers for all-optical information processing

The nonlinear properties of semiconductor lasers and laser amplifiers when subject to optical injection are reviewed and new results are presented for multisection lasers, vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers, and surface-emitting lasers. The main underlying material parameters are outlined and the key design approaches are discussed for both edge-emitting and vertical cavity devices. An overview of theoretical modeling approaches is discussed and a summary of key experimental results is presented. The practical use of optically injected edge-emitting and vertical cavity semiconductor lasers and laser amplifiers is illustrated with examples of applications including, among others, optical logic and chaotic communication.

Nonlinear dynamics of semiconductor lasers with feedback and modulation

The nonlinear dynamics of two semiconductor laser systems: (i) with optical feedback, and (ii) with optical feedback and direct current modulation are evaluated from multi-GHz-bandwidth output power time-series. Animations of compilations of the RF spectrum (from the FFT of the time-series) as a function of optical feedback level, injection current and modulation signal strength is demonstrated as a new tool to give insight into the dynamics. The results are contrasted with prior art and new observations include fine structure in the RF spectrum at low levels of optical feedback and non-stationary switching between periodic and chaotic dynamics for some sets of laser system parameters. Correlation dimension analysis successfully identifies periodic dynamics but most of the dynamical states are too complex to be extracted using standard algorithms.
