Continuous-discontinuous Galerkin time domain (CDGTD) method with generalized dispersive material (GDM) model for computational photonics

The discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method and its recent flavor, the continuous-discontinuous Galerkin time domain (CDGTD) method, have been extensively applied to simulations in the radio frequency (RF) and microwave (MW) regimes due to their inherent ability to efficiently model multiscale problems. We propose to extend the CDGTD method to nanophotonics while exploiting its advantages which have already been established in the RF and MW regimes, such as domain decomposition, non-conformal meshing, high-order elements, and hp-refinement. However, at optical frequencies many materials are highly dispersive, so the modeling of nanophotonic devices requires accurate handling of different dielectric functions, including those of plasmonic elements, dielectrics, and tunable materials. In this paper, we propose a CDGTD method that incorporates a generalized dispersive material (GDM) model which is an efficient way to implement a wide range of optical dispersion models with a universal analytic function. Physics-based dispersion models, such as the Drude, Debye, Lorentz, and critical points as well as more complicated behavior founded on ab-initio principles can all be obtained as special cases of the universal GDM approach. The accuracy and convergence of this GDM-incorporated CDGTD are verified by numerical examples. The CDGTD method, equipped with the GDM model, paves the way to the efficient design and optimization of large scale photonic devices with a diverse range of optical dispersive materials.

Novel Receiver-Enhanced Solar Vapor Generation: Review and Perspectives

Efficient solar vapor/steam generation is important for various applications ranging from power generation, cooling, desalination systems to compact and portable devices like drinking water purification and sterilization units. However, conventional solar steam generation techniques usually rely on costly and cumbersome optical concentration systems and have relatively low efficiency due to bulk heating of the entire liquid volume. Recently, by incorporating novel light harvesting receivers, a new class of solar steam generation systems has emerged with high vapor generation efficiency. They are categorized in two research streams: volumetric and floating solar receivers. In this paper, we review the basic principles of these solar receivers, the mechanism involving from light absorption to the vapor generation, and the associated challenges. We also highlight the two routes to produce high temperature steam using optical and thermal concentration. Finally, we propose a scalable approach to efficiently harvest solar energy using a semi-spectrally selective absorber with near-perfect visible light absorption and low thermal emittance. Our proposed approach represents a new development in thermally concentrated solar distillation systems, which is also cost-effective and easy to fabricate for rapid industrial deployment.

Efficient Wideband Numerical Simulations for Nanostructures Employing a Drude-Critical Points (DCP) Dispersive Model

A highly efficient numerical approach for simulating the wideband optical response of nano-architectures comprised of Drude-Critical Points (DCP) media (e.g., gold and silver) is proposed and validated through comparing with commercial computational software. The kernel of this algorithm is the subdomain level discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method, which can be viewed as a hybrid of the spectral-element time-domain method (SETD) and the finite-element time-domain (FETD) method. An hp-refinement technique is applied to decrease the Degrees-of-Freedom (DoFs) and computational requirements. The collocated E-J scheme facilitates solving the auxiliary equations by converting the inversions of matrices to simpler vector manipulations. A new hybrid time stepping approach, which couples the Runge-Kutta and Newmark methods, is proposed to solve the temporal auxiliary differential equations (ADEs) with a high degree of efficiency. The advantages of this new approach, in terms of computational resource overhead and accuracy, are validated through comparison with well-known commercial software for three diverse cases, which cover both near-field and far-field properties with plane wave and lumped port sources. The presented work provides the missing link between DCP dispersive models and FETD and/or SETD based algorithms. It is a competitive candidate for numerically studying the wideband plasmonic properties of DCP media.

Vortex energy flows generated by core-shell nanospheres

Investigated in this paper is the interaction of light and the nanospheres composed by a dielectric core with a gold-shell cladding that causes the optical vortices inside the core and the whirlpools around the shell. Different radius ratios, dimensions and the dielectric functions of nanospheres were studied using the finite-difference time-domain method. It was found that optical vortices were most likely to occur in the regions of increased absorption cross section and reduced scattering cross section. Two optical vortices of the opposite polarity, each centered in one of the particles of a dimer are created by a nanoshell dimer. The surrounding media of a nanoshell with different dielectric functions can be used to affect the energy flows generated by core-shell nanospheres.

Electromagnetic energy vortex associated with sub-wavelength plasmonic Taiji marks

The Taiji symbol is a very old schematic representation of two opposing but complementary patterns in oriental civilization. Using electron beam lithography, we fabricated an array of 70 × 70 gold Taiji marks with 30 nm thickness and a total area of 50 × 50 µm(2) on a fused silica substrate. The diameter of each Taiji mark is 500 nm, while the period of the array is 700 nm. Here we present experimental as well as numerical simulation results pertaining to plasmonic resonances of several Taiji nano-structures under normal illumination. We have identified a Taiji structure with a particularly interesting vortex-like Poynting vector profile, which could be attributed to the special shape and dimensions of the Taiji symbol.
