Understanding the electric and magnetic response of isolated metaatoms by means of a multipolar field decomposition

Multipolar analysis of the second harmonic generated by dielectric particles

We studied the second harmonic generation (SHG) by two-dimensional dielectric particles made of a centrosymmetric high-index material. The calculated scattered fields at the fundamental and harmonic frequencies are decomposed on a multipolar basis, allowing the evaluation of the relative strengths of the multipolar resonances excited at the particle. With these tools, we studied the strength of the multipoles that produce the second harmonic field and the role played by those excited at the fundamental frequency.

Chiroptical response of a single plasmonic nanohelix

We investigate the chiroptical response of a single plasmonic nanohelix interacting with a weakly focused circularly polarized Gaussian beam. The optical scattering at the fundamental resonance is characterized experimentally and numerically. The angularly resolved scattering of the excited nanohelix is verified experimentally and it validates the numerical results. We employ a multipole decomposition analysis to study the fundamental and first higher-order resonance of the nanohelix, explaining their chiral properties in terms of the formation of chiral dipoles.

Role of antenna modes and field enhancement in second harmonic generation from dipole nanoantennas

We study optical second harmonic generation from metallic dipole antennas with narrow gaps. Enhancement of the fundamental-frequency field in the gap region plays a marginal role on conversion efficiency. In the symmetric configuration, i.e., with the gap located at the center of the antenna axis, reducing gap size induces a significant red-shift of the maximum conversion efficiency peak. Either enhancement or inhibition of second-harmonic emission may be observed as gap size is decreased, depending on the antenna mode excited at the harmonic frequency. The second-harmonic signal is extremely sensitive to the asymmetry introduced by gap's displacements with respect to the antenna center. In this situation, second-harmonic light can couple to all the available antenna modes. We perform a multipolar analysis that allows engineering the far-field SH emission and find that the interaction with quasi-odd-symmetry modes generates radiation patterns with a strong dipolar component.

Multipolar effects on the dipolar polarizability of magneto-electric antennas

We show the important role played by the multipolar coupling between the illuminating field and magneto-electric scatterers even in the small particle limit (λ/10). A general multipolar method is presented which, for the case of planar non centrosymmetric particles, generates a simple expression for the polarizability tensor that directly links the dipolar moment to the incident field. The relevancy of this approach is demonstrated by comparing thoroughly the dipolar moments predicted by the method with full numerical calculations.

Magnetic field concentrator for probing optical magnetic metamaterials

Development of all dielectric and plasmonic metamaterials with a tunable optical frequency magnetic response creates a need for new inspection techniques. We propose a method of measuring magnetic responses of such metamaterials within a wide range of optical frequencies with a single probe. A tapered fiber probe with a radially corrugated metal coating concentrates azimuthally polarized light in the near-field into a subwavelength spot the longitudinal magnetic field component which is much stronger than the perpendicular electric one. The active probe may be used in a future scanning near-field magnetic microscope for studies of magnetic responses of subwavelength elementary cells of metamaterials.
