Chirped-quasi-periodic structure for quasi-phase-matching

1D spatially chirped periodic structures: managing their spatial spectrum and investigating their near-field diffraction

This work introduces a class of 1D spatial-frequency-modulated structures with transmittance T(x), in which the period changes along the x axis so that the corresponding spatial frequency f(x) sinusoidally alternates between two values. It is shown that T(x) generally is an almost-periodic function and has an impulsive spatial spectrum. However, we find the condition under which T(x) is a periodic function and its spatial spectrum form a lattice of impulses. When the periodicity condition is fulfilled, we call these structures as 1D spatially chirped periodic structures. These structures are characterized by two natural numbers, named as n _c and n _{a v} , and a real parameter named as frequency modulation strength (FMS). As an important special case, we define a 1D spatially chirped amplitude sinusoidal grating (SCASG) based on the transmission function of a conventional amplitude sinusoidal grating, in which the phase of conventional amplitude sinusoidal grating is replaced by desired chirped phase. Then the spatial spectrum of a 1D SCASG is investigated in detail, and it is shown that the spatial spectrum can be managed by changing the value of FMS. In other words, the grating's spectrum can be manipulated by adjusting the value of FMS. This feature might find applications in optical sharing of the incident power among different diffraction orders. Moreover, near-field diffraction from 1D SCASGs is studied by using the so-called angular (spatial) spectrum method, and Talbot distances for these gratings are determined and verified experimentally. It is shown that the intensity profiles at quartet- and octant-Talbot distances strongly depend on the values of the parameters n _c and n _{a v} . In comparison with the conventional gratings, we see some new and interesting aspects in the diffraction from 1D SCASGs. For instance, unlike the conventional gratings, in some propagation distances, the diffraction patterns possess sharp and smooth intensity bars at which the intensity is several times of the incident light beam's intensity. It is shown that the maximum intensity of these bright bars over the diffraction patterns depends on the characteristic parameters of the grating, including n _c , n _{a v} , and FMS of the grating. These intensity bars might find applications for trapping and aggregation of particles along straight lines.

White Laser Realized via Synergic Second- and Third-Order Nonlinearities

White laser with balanced performance of broad bandwidth, high average and peak power, large pulse energy, high spatial and temporal coherence, controllable spectrum profile, and overall chroma are highly desirable in various fields of modern science. Here, for the first time, we report an innovative scheme of harnessing the synergic action of both the second-order nonlinearity (2^nd-NL) and the third-order nonlinearity (3^rd-NL) in a single chirped periodically poled lithium niobate (CPPLN) nonlinear photonic crystal driven by a high-peak-power near-infrared (NIR) (central wavelength~1400 nm, energy~100 μJ per pulse) femtosecond pump laser to produce visible to near infrared (vis-NIR, 400-900 nm) supercontinuum white laser. The CPPLN involves a series of reciprocal-lattice bands that can be exploited to support quasiphase matching for simultaneous broadband second- and third-harmonic generations (SHG and THG) with considerable conversion efficiency. Due to the remarkable 3^rd-NL which is due to the high energy density of the pump, SHG and THG laser pulses will induce significant spectral broadening in them and eventually generate bright vis-NIR white laser with high conversion efficiency up to 30%. Moreover, the spectral profile and overall chroma of output white laser can be widely modulated by adjusting the pump laser intensity, wavelength, and polarization. Our work indicates that one can deeply engineer the synergic and collective action of 2^nd-NL and 3^rd-NL in nonlinear crystals to accomplish high peak power, ultrabroadband vis-NIR white laser and hopefully realize the even greater but much more challenging dream of ultraviolet-visible-infrared full-spectrum laser.

Nonlinear Beam Shaping in Domain Engineered Ferroelectric Crystals

Domain engineered ferroelectric crystals are a type of microstructure functional material that is used widely in the area of nonlinear optics. Herein, research processes in the area of nonlinear beam shaping using domain engineered crystals in the past decade are reviewed. The newly developed design methods, such as the nonlinear Huygens-Fresnel principle, nonlinear volume holography, and caustic design, which have analogs in linear optics, are introduced. Using the proposed methods for nonlinear beam shaping, multiple function integration, generation of Airy beams, and arbitrary curved trajectories are realized. As an extra degree of freedom, orbital angular momentum of light beams is generated and manipulated through domain engineering. Discussions and future directions in this field are presented.

Tunable third harmonic generation of vortex beams in an optical superlattice

We report generation of tunable vortex beams in the blue spectral range, with a 3.3 nm spectral tuning range, by frequency tripling of the near-infrared (IR) wave at around 1.34 um in a LiTaO₃ optical superlattice. The nonlinear crystal used in this work has a chirped dual-periodical structure which can provide two expanded reciprocal vectors for tunable performance of the cascaded third harmonic generation (THG). The maximum THG efficiency reaches about 1.4%.

Manipulation of quadratic cascading processes in a locally quasi-periodic χ(²) medium

We theoretically and numerically investigate the quadratic cascading effect of third-harmonic (TH) generation in a locally quasi-periodic nonlinear photonic structure. We study the effect of structure parameters on the acceptance bandwidth and conversion efficiency of the cascading process. We demonstrate that the conversion efficiency of the cascading process can be enhanced by using a longer locally quasi-periodic nonlinear photonic crystal, without adversely affecting the acceptance bandwidth of the emitted radiation.
