Instantaneous lineshape analysis of Fourier domain mode-locked lasers

Pulsed swept-source FDML-MOPA laser with kilowatt picosecond pulses around 1550 nm

Swept-source lasers are versatile light sources for spectroscopy, imaging, and microscopy. Swept-source-powered multiphoton microscopy can achieve high-speed, inertia-free point scanning with MHz line-scan rates. The recently introduced spectro-temporal laser imaging by diffractive excitation (SLIDE) technique employs swept-source lasers to achieve kilohertz imaging rates by using a swept-source laser in combination with a diffraction grating for point scanning. Multiphoton microscopy at a longer wavelength, especially in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) region, can have advantages in deep tissue penetration or applications in light detection and ranging (LiDAR). Here we present a swept-source laser around 1550 nm providing high-speed wavelength agility and high peak power pulses for nonlinear excitation. The swept-source laser is a Fourier-domain mode-locked (FDML) laser operating at 326 kHz sweep rate. For high peak powers, the continuous wave (cw) output is pulse modulated to short picosecond pulses and amplified using erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) to peak powers of several kilowatts. This FDML-master oscillator power amplifier (FDML-MOPA) setup uses reliable, low-cost fiber components. As proof-of-principle measurement, we show third-harmonic generation (THG) using harmonic nanoparticles at the 10 MHz pulse excitation rate. This new, to the best of our knowledge, laser source provides unique performance parameters for applications in nonlinear microscopy, spectroscopy, and ranging.

Dual-comb based time-stretch optical coherence tomography for large and segmental imaging depth

Optical coherence tomography based on time-stretch enables high frame rate and high-resolution imaging for the inertia-free wavelength-swept mechanism. The fundamental obstacle is still the acquisition bandwidth's restriction on imaging depth. By introducing dual-comb with slightly different repetition rates, the induced Vernier effect is found to be capable of relieving the problem. In our work, a dual-comb based time-stretch optical coherence tomography is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, achieving a 1.5-m imaging depth and 200-kHz A-scan rate. Moreover, about a 33.4-µm resolution and 25-µm accuracy are achieved. In addition, by adjusting the frequency detuning of the dual-comb, the A-scan rate can be further boosted to video-rate imaging. With enlarged imaging depth, this scheme is promising for a wide range of applications, including light detection and ranging.

Fourier-domain mode-locked laser combined with a master-oscillator power amplifier architecture

Originally introduced in 2005 for high-speed optical coherence tomography, the rapidly wavelength-swept Fourier-domain mode-locked (FDML) laser still, to this day, enables highest imaging speeds through a very high-speed spectral tuning capability. The FDML laser achieves a tuning bandwidth of over 1/10th of its center wavelength and can sweep this entire bandwidth in less than a microsecond. Interestingly, even though it covers a very broad spectral range, instantaneously it has a narrow spectral linewidth that puts it in a unique space compared to other high-speed broadband laser sources, e.g., mode-locked lasers or supercontinuum sources. Although it has been applied for nonlinear Raman spectroscopy and imaging, a current drawback of this continuous wave laser is the relatively low instantaneous power of 10-100 mW. Here, we report the combination of an FDML laser with a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) architecture to increase the instantaneous power of the FDML for nonlinear optical interactions. The output of an FDML laser around 1060 nm is modulated to short pulses by using an electro-optic amplitude modulator and subsequently amplified using ytterbium-doped fiber amplifiers (YDFAs). This generates a spectral rainbow of 65 picosecond pulses, where each pulse has a distinct, monochromatic wavelength. The instantaneous power can be adjusted by the YDFAs to reach nonlinear optical excitation regimes. This wavelength-swept FDML-MOPA laser will have a vast range of applications in, e.g., nonlinear optics, spectroscopy, imaging, and sensing.

Ultrafast discrete swept source based on dual chirped combs for microscopic imaging

An inertial-free, ultrafast frequency comb source based on two chirped optical frequency combs (OFCs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The high linearity frequency sweeping is realized by the Vernier effect between the two OFCs rather than any mechanical motion component, so that good stability and reliability are ensured and no recalibration or resampling process is required. Swept rate up to 1 MHz is realized while keeping a narrow instantaneous linewidth of 0.03 nm, thanks to the extra-cavity frequency sweeping method. The wavelength step is proportional to the swept rate (3.8 pm at 10 kHz), and can be tuned by changing the repetition rate difference between the two OFCs. This swept source is applied for high-speed wavelength encoded imaging and achieves 4.4-μm spatial resolution at a 329-kHz frame rate. Compared with the traditional time-stretch microscopy, the signal acquisition bandwidth decreased from 3.8 GHz to below 90 MHz to achieve the same spatial resolution. Furthermore, the exposure time for a specific wavelength is much longer due to the discrete sweeping feature, which is a benefit for higher sensitivity. This discrete swept source provided a promising low-cost option for high-speed biomedical imaging systems and high-accuracy spectroscopy.

Ultra low noise Fourier domain mode locked laser for high quality megahertz optical coherence tomography

We investigate the origin of high frequency noise in Fourier domain mode locked (FDML) lasers and present an extremely well dispersion compensated setup which virtually eliminates intensity noise and dramatically improves coherence properties. We show optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging at 3.2 MHz A-scan rate and demonstrate the positive impact of the described improvements on the image quality. Especially in highly scattering samples, at specular reflections and for strong signals at large depth, the noise in optical coherence tomography images is significantly reduced. We also describe a simple model that suggests a passive physical stabilizing mechanism that leads to an automatic compensation of remaining cavity dispersion in FDML lasers.

High-resolution retinal swept source optical coherence tomography with an ultra-wideband Fourier-domain mode-locked laser at MHz A-scan rates

We present a new 1060 nm Fourier domain mode locked laser (FDML laser) with a record 143 nm sweep bandwidth at 2∙ 417 kHz  =  834 kHz and 120 nm at 1.67 MHz, respectively. We show that not only the bandwidth alone, but also the shape of the spectrum is critical for the resulting axial resolution, because of the specific wavelength-dependent absorption of the vitreous. The theoretical limit of our setup lies at 5.9 µm axial resolution. In vivo MHz-OCT imaging of human retina is performed and the image quality is compared to the previous results acquired with 70 nm sweep range, as well as to existing spectral domain OCT data with 2.1 µm axial resolution from literature. We identify benefits of the higher resolution, for example the improved visualization of small blood vessels in the retina besides several others.

Direct experimental measurement of single-mode and mode-hopping dynamics in frequency swept lasers

A time-resolved study is presented of the single-mode and mode-switching dynamics observed in swept source vertical cavity surfing emitting lasers and swept wavelength short external cavity lasers. A self-delayed interferometric technique is used to experimentally measure the phase and intensity of these frequency swept lasers, allowing direct examination of the modal dynamics. Visualisation of the instantaneous optical spectrum reveals mode-hop free single mode lasing in the case of the vertical cavity laser, with a tuning rate of 6.3 GHz/ns. More complex mode-switching behaviour occurs in the external cavity laser, with the mode-hopping dynamics found to be dominated by the deterministic movement of the spectral filter. Evidence of transient multi-mode operation and mode-pulling is also presented.

High-speed OCT light sources and systems [Invited]

Imaging speed is one of the most important parameters that define the performance of optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems. During the last two decades, OCT speed has increased by over three orders of magnitude. New developments in wavelength-swept lasers have repeatedly been crucial for this development. In this review, we discuss the historical evolution and current state of the art of high-speed OCT systems, with focus on wavelength swept light sources and swept source OCT systems.

Wavelength shifting of intra-cavity photons: Adiabatic wavelength tuning in rapidly wavelength-swept lasers

We analyze the physics behind the newest generation of rapidly wavelength tunable sources for optical coherence tomography (OCT), retaining a single longitudinal cavity mode during operation without repeated build up of lasing. In this context, we theoretically investigate the currently existing concepts of rapidly wavelength-swept lasers based on tuning of the cavity length or refractive index, leading to an altered optical path length inside the resonator. Specifically, we consider vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with microelectromechanical system (MEMS) mirrors as well as Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) and Vernier-tuned distributed Bragg reflector (VT-DBR) lasers. Based on heuristic arguments and exact analytical solutions of Maxwell's equations for a fundamental laser resonator model, we show that adiabatic wavelength tuning is achieved, i.e., hopping between cavity modes associated with a repeated build up of lasing is avoided, and the photon number is conserved. As a consequence, no fundamental limit exists for the wavelength tuning speed, in principle enabling wide-range wavelength sweeps at arbitrary tuning speeds with narrow instantaneous linewidth.

Modeling and analysis of polarization effects in Fourier domain mode-locked lasers

We develop a theoretical model for Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) lasers in a non-polarization-maintaining configuration, which is the most widely used type of FDML source. This theoretical approach is applied to analyze a widely wavelength-swept FDML setup, as used for picosecond pulse generation by temporal compression of the sweeps. We demonstrate that good agreement between simulation and experiment can only be obtained by including polarization effects due to fiber bending birefringence, polarization mode dispersion, and cross-phase modulation into the theoretical model. Notably, the polarization dynamics are shown to have a beneficial effect on the instantaneous linewidth, resulting in improved coherence and thus compressibility of the wavelength-swept FDML output.

Picosecond pulses from wavelength-swept continuous-wave Fourier domain mode-locked lasers

Ultrafast lasers have a crucial function in many fields of science; however, up to now, high-energy pulses directly from compact, efficient and low-power semiconductor lasers are not available. Therefore, we introduce a new approach based on temporal compression of the continuous-wave, wavelength-swept output of Fourier domain mode-locked lasers, where a narrowband optical filter is tuned synchronously to the round-trip time of light in a kilometre-long laser cavity. So far, these rapidly swept lasers enabled orders-of-magnitude speed increase in optical coherence tomography. Here we report on the generation of ~60-70 ps pulses at 390 kHz repetition rate. As energy is stored optically in the long-fibre delay line and not as population inversion in the laser-gain medium, high-energy pulses can now be generated directly from a low-power, compact semiconductor-based oscillator. Our theory predicts subpicosecond pulses with this new technique in the future.

Dynamics of Fourier domain mode-locked lasers

An analysis of the dynamical features in the output of a Fourier Domain Mode Locked laser is presented. An experimental study of the wavelength sweep-direction asymmetry in the output of such devices is undertaken. A mathematical model based on a set of delay differential equations is developed and shown to agree well with experiment.

Multi-MHz retinal OCT

We analyze the benefits and problems of in vivo optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging of the human retina at A-scan rates in excess of 1 MHz, using a 1050 nm Fourier-domain mode-locked (FDML) laser. Different scanning strategies enabled by MHz OCT line rates are investigated, and a simple multi-volume data processing approach is presented. In-vivo OCT of the human ocular fundus is performed at different axial scan rates of up to 6.7 MHz. High quality non-mydriatic retinal imaging over an ultra-wide field is achieved by a combination of several key improvements compared to previous setups. For the FDML laser, long coherence lengths and 72 nm wavelength tuning range are achieved using a chirped fiber Bragg grating in a laser cavity at 419.1 kHz fundamental tuning rate. Very large data sets can be acquired with sustained data transfer from the data acquisition card to host computer memory, enabling high-quality averaging of many frames and of multiple aligned data sets. Three imaging modes are investigated: Alignment and averaging of 24 data sets at 1.68 MHz axial line rate, ultra-dense transverse sampling at 3.35 MHz line rate, and dual-beam imaging with two laser spots on the retina at an effective line rate of 6.7 MHz.

Chromatic polarization effects of swept waveforms in FDML lasers and fiber spools

We present detailed investigations of chromatic polarization effects, caused by fiber spools used in FDML lasers and buffering spools for rapidly wavelength swept lasers. We introduce a novel wavelength swept FDML laser source, specially tailored for polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (OCT) which switches between two different linear polarization states separated by 45°, i.e. 90° on the Poincaré sphere. The polarization maintaining laser cavity itself generates a stable linear polarization state and uses an external buffering technique in order to provide alternating polarization states for successive wavelength sweeps. The design of the setup is based on a comprehensive analysis of the polarization output from FDML lasers, using a novel 150 MHz polarization analyzer. We investigate the fiber polarization properties related to swept source OCT for different fiber delay topologies and analyze the polarization state of different FDML laser sources.

Extended coherence length Fourier domain mode locked lasers at 1310 nm

Fourier domain mode locked (FDML) lasers are excellent tunable laser sources for frequency domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) systems due to their combination of high sweep rates, large tuning ranges, and high output powers. However, conventional FDML lasers provide coherence lengths of only 4-10 mm, limiting their use in demanding applications such as intravascular OCT where coherence lengths of >20 mm are required for optimal imaging of large blood vessels. Furthermore, like most swept lasers, conventional FDML lasers produce only one useable sweep direction per tunable filter drive cycle, halving the effective sweep rate of the laser compared to the filter drive frequency. Here, we demonstrate a new class of FDML laser incorporating broadband dispersion compensation near 1310 nm. Elimination of chromatic dispersion in the FDML cavity results in the generation of forward (short to long wavelength) and backward (long to short wavelength) sweeps with substantially identical properties and coherence lengths of >21 mm. This advance enables long-range, high-speed FD-OCT imaging without the need for optical buffering stages, significantly reducing laser cost and complexity.
