Abstract
A simple approach to generate high-energy few-cycle optical vortices with minimized topological charge dispersion is introduced. By means of numerical simulations, it is shown that, by leveraging the intrinsic properties of optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), clean transfer of topological charge from a high-energy narrowband pump pulse to a broadband idler is feasible under certain particular conditions, enabling the generation of high-energy few-cycle vortex pulses with extremely low topological charge dispersion.

Abstract
Spectrally incoherent laser pulses with sufficiently large fractional bandwidth are in demand for the mitigation of laser-plasma instabilities occurring in high-energy laser-target interactions. Here, we modeled, implemented, and optimized a dual-stage high-energy optical parametric amplifier for broadband, spectrally incoherent pulses in the near-infrared. The amplifier delivers close to 400 mJ of signal energy through noncollinear parametric interaction of 100-nJ-scale broadband, spectrally incoherent seed pulses near 1053 nm with a narrowband high-energy pump operating at 526.5 nm. Mitigation strategies for high-frequency spatial modulations in the amplified signal caused by index inhomogeneities in the Nd:YLF rods of the pump laser are explored and discussed in detail.

Abstract
A femtosecond chirped pulse amplifier based on cryogenically cooled Fe:ZnSe was demonstrated at 333 Hz-33 times higher than previous results achieved at near-room-temperature. The long upper-state lifetime allows free-running, diode-pumped Er:YAG lasers to be used as pump lasers. 250-fs, 4.59-mJ pulses are produced with a center wavelength of 4.07 µm, which avoids strong atmospheric CO2 absorption that cuts on around 4.2 µm. It is therefore possible to operate the laser in ambient air with good beam quality. By focusing the 18-GW beam in air, harmonics up to the ninth order were observed indicating its potential for use in strong-field experimentation.

Abstract
Optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) is an effective way to generate ultrashort pulses that has been used extensively for a variety of applications requiring high peak intensities. Precise control and measurement of a system's spectral and spatial phases are required for Fourier-transform-limited pulse compression and diffraction-limited focusing. Phase accumulated during optical parametric amplification (OPA) can degrade the compressibility and focusability of the pulse, reducing peak intensity. We used analytic and numerical analysis of OPA to study the influence of crystal parameters, the wavefront of the pump and signal, and their relative optical alignment on the accumulated phase. We show that the accumulated signal phase is largely independent of amplifier saturation and, with significant local wavefront gradients in the signal or pump beam, the quality of the compressed pulses can be degraded. We use first-order expressions for the pump- and signal-angle sensitivity to evaluate an OPCPA system consisting of a highly deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate amplifier designed to support bandwidth for 15 fs pulses centered at 920 nm.

Abstract
We demonstrate a table-top source delivering ultra-broadband THz pulses with electric field strength exceeding 100 kV/cm at a repetition rate of 200 kHz. The source is based on optical rectification of 23 fs pulses at 1030 nm delivered by a ytterbium-doped fiber laser followed by a nonlinear temporal compression stage. We generate THz pulses with a conversion efficiency of up to 0.11 % with a spectrum extending to 11 THz using a 1 mm thick GaP crystal and a conversion efficiency of 0.016 % with a spectrum extending to 30 THz using a 30 µm thick GaSe crystal. The essential features of the emitted THz pulse spectra are well captured by simulations of the optical rectification process relying on coupled nonlinear equations. Our ultrafast laser-based source uniquely satisfies an important requirement of nonlinear THz experiments, namely the emission of ultra-broadband THz pulses with high electric field amplitudes at high repetition rates, opening a route towards nonlinear time-resolved THz experiments with high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract
In optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA), pump temporal intensity modulation is transferred to the chirped-signal spectrum via instantaneous parametric gain and results in contrast degradation of the recompressed signal. We investigate, for the first time to our knowledge, the pump-to-signal noise transfer in a two-stage ultra-broadband OPCPA pumped by a single laser and show the dependence of pump-induced signal noise, characterized both before and after pulse compression, on the difference in pump-seed delay in the two stages. We demonstrate an up-to-15-dB reduction of the pump-induced contrast degradation via pump-seed delay optimization. Experiments and simulations show that, even when parametric amplifiers are operated in saturation, the pump-seed delay can be used to minimize the pump-induced contrast degradation that is attributed largely to the noises from the unsaturated edges of the pulse and that of the beam.

Abstract
We present a near-infrared optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier (OPCPA) and soft X-ray (SXR) high-harmonic generation system. The OPCPA produces few-cycle pulses at a center wavelength of 800 nm and operates at a high repetition rate of 100 kHz. It is seeded by fully programmable amplitude and phase controlled ultra-broadband pulses from a Ti:sapphire oscillator. The output from the OPCPA system was compressed to near-transform-limited 9.3-fs pulses. Fully characterized pulse compression was recorded for an average power of 22.5 W, demonstrating pulses with a peak power greater than 21 GW. Without full temporal characterization, high-power operation was achieved up to 35 W. We demonstrate that at such high repetition rates, spatiotemporally flattened pump pulses can be achieved through a cascaded second-harmonic generation approach with an efficiency of more than 70%. This combination provides a compelling OPCPA architecture for scaling the peak power of high-repetition-rate ultra-broadband systems in the near-infrared. The output of this 800-nm OPCPA system was used to generate SXR radiation reaching 190 eV photon energy through high-harmonic generation in helium.

Abstract
Angular dispersion observed in a nanosecond optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (ns-OPCPA) amplifier adopted in the frontend of a multi-PW laser was analyzed. The theory on the angular dispersion, extended by including the wavefront rotation and the pulse front tilt of a strongly chirped laser pulse, revealed that the wavefront rotation is a major contributor to the angular dispersion, as compared to the pulse front tilt, in a ns-OPCPA amplifier. It was also shown that the wavefront rotation could be introduced by the phase mismatch and the noncollinear propagation angle in the noncollinear ns-OPCPA amplifier. The theoretical prediction was experimentally verified by measuring the angular dispersion of the ns-OPCPA frontend installed in the 20-fs, 4-PW Ti:Sapphire laser. We emphasize the importance of the proper characterization and control of the angular dispersion in the ns-OPCPA amplifier since the focus intensity of an ultrahigh power laser could be significantly reduced due to the spatiotemporal effect even for small induced angular dispersion.

Abstract
A wavelength tunable femtosecond optical parametric oscillator pumped by the second harmonic of a Yb: KGW solid state oscillator was investigated. The intracavity group delay dispersion was positive, and soliton condition was satisfied by introducing negative nonlinearity from cascaded quadratic nonlinearity (CQN). Two different approaches were investigated - CQN induced by the same amplifying nonlinear crystal or CQN induced by an additional second harmonic generating nonlinear crystal inside the same resonator. The second crystal was shown to correct the resonator misalignment induced by the rotation of the amplifying crystal as the wavelength was tuned in the range of 770-970 nm. It simultaneously compensated positive resonator GDD offsets of +/- 1000 fs2 with +/- 5% SHG power losses, simulating a method for compensation of GDD ripples in a broadband mirror.

Abstract
A compact, femtosecond-pumped noncollinear optical parametric amplifier (NOPA) is presented with a passive spectral shaping technique, employed to produce a flat-top-like ultrabroadband output spectrum. The NOPA is pumped by a dedicated 2 mJ, 120 fs Yb3+-based CPA system, which generates both the second harmonic pump pulse and white light supercontinuum as the signal pulse. A chirped mirror pair pre-compensates the material GVD within the optical path of the signal pulse to produce a near-FTL pulse duration at the OPA crystal output. By optimizing both the pump/signal cross angle and the pump/signal delay, the 40 cm × 40 cm footprint, single-pass, fs-pumped, direct NOPA (non-NOPCPA) system generates a record 20 µJ, 11 fs pulses at 820 nm central wavelength with a bandwidth of 230 nm FWHM, to be used as an ultrashort optical probe pulse for relativistic laser-plasma interactions at the petawatt-class POLARIS laser system.

Abstract
We study and demonstrate the efficient parametric amplification of spectrally incoherent broadband nanosecond pulses to high energies. Signals composed of mutually incoherent monochromatic lines or amplified spontaneous emission are amplified in a sequence of optical parametric amplifiers pumped at 526.5 nm, with the last amplifier set in a collinear geometry. This configuration results in 70% conversion efficiency from the pump to the combined signal and idler, with a combined energy reaching 400 mJ and an optical spectrum extending over 60 nm around 1053 nm. The spatial, spectral, and temporal properties of the amplified waves are investigated. The demonstrated high conversion efficiency, spectral incoherence, and large bandwidth open the way to a new generation of high-energy, solid-state laser drivers that mitigate laser-plasma instabilities and laser-beam imprint via enhanced spectral bandwidth.

Abstract
We propose a method for multi-pass non-collinear optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (MNOPCPA) based on two geometries, tangent phase-matching (TPM) and Poynting vector walk-off compensation (PVWC), which optimize the performance of optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA). A feasible design scheme is also presented for use in implementing this approach. Employing this design, we construct and perform a numerical simulation, showing that back-conversion from the signal and idler to the pump can be inhibited, and that the conversion efficiency can be boosted dramatically, approaching the theoretical limit of ~64%, when amplification is nearly saturated at full bandwidth. In the MNOPCPA scheme, the output signal has a wider spectrum and a corresponding shorter Fourier-limited pulse duration with the pump being continuously depleted. A barycenter shift of the signal spot results from a spatial walk-off effect due to the pump, which can be offset and corrected well. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a multi-pass non-collinear OPCPA method employed the scheme of regenerative amplification.

Abstract
We describe a parametric-amplification-based front end for seeding high-energy Nd:glass laser systems. The front end delivers up to 200 mJ by parametric amplification in 2.5-ns flat-in-time pulses tunable over more than 15 nm. Spectral tunability over a range larger than what is typically achieved by laser media at similar energy levels is implemented to investigate cross-beam energy transfer in multibeam target experiments. The front-end operation is simulated to explain the amplified signal's sensitivity to the input pump and signal. A large variety of amplified waveforms are generated by closed-loop pulse shaping. Abstract
Quasi-parametric chirped pulse amplification (QPCPA) is a new scheme that enables the amplification of chirped signal pulses without back conversion by depleting the idler pulses. In this paper, we present a numerical study on the bandwidth, efficiency, and robustness of QPCPA. Self-locked phase among the interacting waves is found to be the underlying mechanism for the suppression of back conversion, which allows signal efficiency approaching to the quantum limit even under the phase-mismatch condition, and thus greatly increases the phase-mismatch tolerance of QPCPA. We demonstrate that QPCPA can break through the trade-off between the efficiency and bandwidth encountered in conventional optical parametric amplification, hence supporting highly efficient amplification of few-cycle pulses.

Abstract
Noncollinear optical parametric amplifiers (NOPAs) have become the leading technique for the amplification of carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stable, few-cycle pulses at high repetition rate and high average power. In this Letter, a NOPA operating at a repetition rate of 100 kHz delivering more than 24 W of average power before compression is reported. The amplified bandwidth supports sub-7 fs pulse durations and pulse compression close to the transform limit is realized. CEP stability after amplification is demonstrated. Abstract
During amplification in a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier the spatial and temporal coordinates of the amplified field are inherently coupled. These couplings or distortions can limit the peak intensity, among other things. In this work, a numerical study of the spatiotemporal distortions in BBO-based noncollinear optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers (NOPCPAs) is presented for a wide range of parameters and for different amplification conditions. It is shown that for Gaussian pump beams, gain saturation introduces strong distortions and high conversion efficiency always comes at the price of strong spatiotemporal couplings which drastically reduce the peak intensity even when pulse fronts of the pump and the signal are matched. However, high conversion efficiencies with minimum spatiotemporal distortions can still be achieved with flat-top pump beam profiles.

Abstract
Non-collinear optical parametric amplification has become the leading technology for amplifying few-cycle carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable pulses to high energy at extreme repetition rates. In this work, a parametric amplifier system devoted to ultrafast photoionization experiments with coincidence detection is reported. The amplifier delivers CEP-stable few-cycle pulses with an average power of 5 W, and operates at repetition rates between 400 and 800 kHz. Close to transform-limited compression of the few-cycle pulses is achieved with minimized spatio-temporal distortions. Potential limitations introduced by spatio-temporal couplings to applications in attosecond science are analyzed. In particular, it is shown that pulse front tilt resulting from non-collinear amplification can considerably reduce the asymmetry in stereo above threshold ionization (stereo-ATI) experiments.

Abstract
We experimentally study a new kind of parametric noise that is initiated from signal scattering and enhanced through optical parametric amplification. Such scattering-initiated parametric noise behaves similarly to parametric super-fluorescence in the spatial domain, yet is typically much stronger. In the time domain it inherits the chirp of signal pulses and can be well compressed. We demonstrate that scattering-initiated parametric noise has little influence on the pulse contrast but can degrade the energy conversion efficiency substantially.

Abstract
We present results from a unique burst-mode femtosecond non-collinear optical parametric amplifier (NOPA) under development for the optical - x-ray pump-probe experiments at the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility. The NOPA operates at a burst rate of 10 Hz, a duty cycle of 2.5% and an intra-burst repetition rate of up to 4.5 MHz, producing high fidelity 15 fs pulses at a center wavelength of 810 nm. Using dispersive amplification filtering of the super-continuum seed pulses allows for selectable pulse duration up to 75 fs, combined with a tuning range in excess of 100 nm whilst remaining nearly transform limited. At an intra-burst rate of 188 kHz the single pulse energy from two sequential NOPA stages reached 180 µJ, corresponding to an average power of 34W during the burst. Acousto- and electro-optic switching techniques enable the generation of transient free bursts of required length and the selection of arbitrary pulse sequences inside the burst.

Abstract
The potential of borate crystals, BBO, LBO and BiBO, for high average power scaling of optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers is investigated. Up-to-date measurements of the absorption coefficients at 515 nm and the thermal conductivities are presented. The measured absorption coefficients are a factor of 10-100 lower than reported by the literature for BBO and LBO. For BBO, a large variation of the absorption coefficients was found between crystals from different manufacturers. The linear and nonlinear absorption coefficients at 515 nm as well as thermal conductivities were determined for the first time for BiBO. Further, different crystal cooling methods are presented. In addition, the limits to power scaling of OPCPAs are discussed.

Abstract
We report on the development of a 2 MHz non collinear optical parametric amplifier (NOPA) for high repetition rate time resolved X-ray or optical spectroscopy. Our modular and very flexible device is pumped by the second and third harmonics of a commercial femtosecond Ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The amplified pulses are tunable from 520 nm to 1000 nm with pulse durations between 15 and 30 fs over the full tuning range. The same setup is also suitable for broadband amplification and we demonstrate the generation of 6 fs pulses at a central wavelength of 850 nm as well as the generation of a broadband spectrum supporting 4.2 fs transform limited pulse duration at a central wavelength of 570 nm. Very high stability and compactness is achieved thanks to an optimized mechanical design.

Abstract
A conceptual design of a high power, ultrabroadband optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier (OPCPA) was carried out comparing nonlinear crystals (LBO and BBO) for 810 nm centered, sub-7.0 fs pulses with energies above 1 mJ. These amplifiers are only possible with a parallel development of kilowatt-level OPCPA-pump amplifiers. It is therefore important to know good strategies to use the available OPCPA-pump energy efficiently. Numerical simulations, including self- and cross-phase modulation, were used to investigate the critical parameters to achieve sufficient spectral and spatial quality. At high output powers, thermal absorption in the nonlinear crystals starts to degrade the output beam quality. Strategies to minimize thermal effects and limits to the maximum average power are discussed.

Abstract
A 2 + 1 dimensional nonlinear pulse propagation model is presented, illustrating the weighting of different effects for the parametric amplification of ultra-broadband spectra in different regimes of energy scaling. Typical features in the distribution of intensity and phase of state-of-the-art OPA-systems can be understood by cascaded spatial and temporal effects.

Abstract
Optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) impose an optical parametric phase (OPP) onto the amplified signal. It manifests itself as a spectral phase in the case of broadband signals and, therefore, hampers pulse compression. Here we present, for the first time, a complete experimental characterization of this OPP for different ultra-broadband noncollinear OPA configurations. This measurement allows us to compensate the OPP and to achieve Fourier-limited pulses as short as 1.9 optical cycles. A numerical model is in excellent agreement with our measurements and reveals the importance of high order phase compensation in the case of noncollinear phase matching. In contrast, operation at degeneracy enables almost complete compensation of the OPP by second-order dispersion only.

Abstract
We report on an OPCPA system delivering CEP-stable pulses with a pulse duration of only 1.7 optical cycles at 880 nm wavelength. This pulse duration is achieved by the generation, optical parametric amplification and compression of a full optical octave of bandwidth. The system is pumped by a high average power Yb-fiber laser system, which allows for operation of the OPCPA at up to 1 MHz repetition rate and 22 W of average output power. Further scaling towards single-cycle pulses, higher energy and output power is discussed.

Abstract
We present a two-color pumped OPCPA system which delivers an ultra-broadband spectrum spanning from 430 nm to 1.3 µm with a Fourier limited pulse duration of sub-3 fs and 1 µJ of pulse energy at a repetition rate of 200 kHz. All frequency components propagate on a common path, thus the spectral phase along the whole spectrum is well-defined. The inner part of the spectrum has been compressed to sub-5 fs pulses.

Abstract
We present an ultra-widely tunable non-collinear optical parametric oscillator with an average output power of more than 3 W and a repetition frequency of 34 MHz. The system is pumped by the second harmonic of a femtosecond Yb:KLu(WO4)2 thin-disk laser oscillator. The wavelength of the signal pulse can be rapidly tuned over a wide range from the visible to the NIR just by scanning the resonator length.
