Partial loss compensation in dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides at near infra-red wavelengths

Compact, ultra-broadband plasmonic grating couplers

We demonstrate all-metallic grating couplers that enable vertical, compact and broadband fiber-coupling. The grating couplers are based on a metal layer and directly convert a vertical fiber mode into surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). In combination with a focusing arrangement, the grating couplers require only a small footprint of 13.5 × 12 µm². We characterize the grating couplers with both periodic and apodized gratings and experimentally show a 1-dB bandwidth of 115 nm with a coupling efficiency of 2.9 dB.

Plasmonic directional couplers using channel waveguides in random arrays of metal nanoparticles

Plasmonic directional couplers based on channel waveguides embedded in random arrays of metal nanoparticles (NPs) operating in near-infrared are fabricated using electron-beam lithography and investigated experimentally characterizing their performance with leakage-radiation microscopy. The power exchange between coupled waveguides, its spatial period and efficiency, along with the overall power transmission, are determined in the wavelength range from 700 to 800 nm. We introduce a simple coupled-mode approach based on three coupled waveguides. The composite system considers a waveguide consisting of NP-filled stripe with characteristics distinctly different from those of the channel waveguides. Using this model, we describe the performance of investigated composite plasmonic configurations and obtain good qualitative agreement with experimental observations.

3D thickness map reconstruction of dielectric thin films using scattering of surface plasmon polaritons

Thin films are key elements in the current development of nanotechnology, and their characterization has become an essential task. In this Letter, we report on a technique to reconstruct full 3D maps of dielectric thin films using the scattered light of decoupled surface plasmon polaritons. Patterned magnesium fluoride thin films were fabricated, and their 3D thickness map was fully reconstructed with high (<1  nm) precision. This technique can be applied and easily adjusted to identify inhomogeneities in wide areas (mm²-cm²) of dielectric samples with subnanometer precision, or to characterize the fabrication processes involved in the preparation of patterned multilayered systems.

Modes and exceptional points in waveguides with impedance boundary conditions

A planar waveguide with an impedance boundary, composed of nonperfect metallic plates, and with passive or active dielectric filling, is considered. We show the possibility of selective mode guiding and amplification when a homogeneous pump is added to the dielectric and analyze differences in TE and TM mode propagation. Such a non-conservative system is also shown to feature exceptional points for specific and experimentally tunable parameters, which are described for a particular case of transparent dielectric.

Plasmonic channel waveguides in random arrays of metallic nanoparticles

We report detailed characterization of surface plasmon-polariton guiding along 1-, 1.5- and 2-μm-wide channels in high-density (~75 μm^-2) random arrays of gold 70-nm-high and 50-nm-wide nanoparticles fabricated on a 70-nm-thin gold film supported by a 170-μm-thick silica substrate. The mode propagation losses, effective index dispersion, and scattering parameters are characterized using leakage-radiation microscopy, in direct and Fourier planes, in the wavelength range of 740-840 nm. It is found that the mode supported by 2-μm-wide channels propagates over > 10 μm in straight waveguides, with the corresponding S-bends and Y-splitters functioning reasonably well. The results show that the SPP waves can efficiently be guided by narrow scattering-free channels cut through randomly corrugated surface regions. The potential of this waveguiding mechanism is yet to be fully explored by tuning the scattering mean-free path and localization length via the density and size of random nanoparticles. Nevertheless, the results obtained are encouraging and promising diverse applications of these waveguide components in plasmonic circuitry.

Maximum modulation of plasmon-guided modes by graphene gating

The potential of graphene in plasmonic electro-optical waveguide modulators has been investigated in detail by finite-element method modelling of various widely used plasmonic waveguiding configurations. We estimated the maximum possible modulation depth values one can achieve with plasmonic devices operating at telecom wavelengths and exploiting the optical Pauli blocking effect in graphene. Conclusions and guidelines for optimization of modulation/intrinsic loss trade-off have been provided and generalized for any graphene-based plasmonic waveguide modulators, which should help in consideration and design of novel active-plasmonic devices.

Compact wavelength add-drop multiplexers using Bragg gratings in coupled dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides

We report a novel design of a compact wavelength add-drop multiplexer utilizing dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs). The DLSPPW-based configuration exploits routing properties of directional couplers and filtering abilities of Bragg gratings. We present practical realization of a 20-μm-long device operating at telecom wavelengths that can reroute optical signals separated by approximately 70 nm in the wavelength band. We characterize the performance of the fabricated structures using scanning near-field optical microscopy as well as leakage-radiation microscopy and support our findings with numerical simulations.

Battling absorptive losses by plasmon–exciton coupling in multimeric nanostructures

This study presents a novel approach dealing with absorptive losses in plasmonic metamaterials, capitalizing on field enhancement effect in multimeric nanostructures.

Effect of dielectric cladding on active plasmonic device based on InGaAsP multiple quantum wells

The Surface Plasmon Polariton (SPP) planar waveguide with amorphous silicon (α-Si) cladding is studied, for empowering the device modulation response. The device is fabricated with multiple quantum wells (MQWs) as the gain media electrically pumped for compensating SPP propagation loss on Au film waveguide. The SPP propagation greatly benefits from the modal gain for the long-range hybrid mode, which is optimized by adopting an α-Si cladding layer accompanied with minimal degradation of mode confinement. The proposed structure presented more sensitive response to electrical manipulation than the one without cladding in experiment.

Directional coupling in long-range dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides

Directional couplers (DCs) based on long-range dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (LR-DLSPPWs) operating at telecom wavelengths are studied both numerically and experimentally. The investigated LR-DLSPPWs are formed by ~1.2-µm-high and 1-µm-wide polymer ridges fabricated atop of 15-nm-thick and 500-nm-wide gold stripes supported by a 288-nm-thick Ormoclear polymer deposited on a low-index (n(s) ≈1.34) layer of Cytop. DC structures consisting of sine-shaped S-bends (having an offset of ~10 µm over a distance of ~20 µm) and ~100-µm-long parallel LR-DLSPPWs with a center-to-center separation of 2 µm are characterized using scanning near-field microscopy. The experimentally obtained values of the propagation length (~400 µm), S-bend loss (~4 dB) and coupling length (~100 µm) are found in good agreement with the numerical simulations, indicating a significant potential of LR-DLSPPWs for the realization of various plasmonic components.

Radiation guiding with surface plasmon polaritons

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are electromagnetic (EM) modes propagating along metal-dielectric interfaces, in which surface collective excitations of free electrons in the metal are coupled to evanescent EM fields in the dielectric. Various SPP modes can be supported by flat and curved, single and multiple surfaces, exhibiting remarkable properties, including the possibility of concentrating EM fields beyond the diffraction limit, i.e. on the nanoscale, while enhancing local field strengths by several orders of magnitude. This unique feature of SPP modes, along with the ever-increasing demands for miniaturization of photonic components and circuits, generates an exponentially growing interest in SPP-mediated radiation guiding and SPP-based waveguide components. Here we review the current status of this rapidly developing field, starting with a brief presentation of the main planar SPP modes along with the techniques employed for their excitation and manipulation by sets of nanoparticles. We then describe in detail various SPP-based waveguide configurations that ensure two-dimensional mode confinement in the plane perpendicular to the propagation direction and compare their characteristics. Excitation of SPP waveguide modes and recent progress in the development of SPP-based waveguide components are also discussed, concluding with our outlook on challenges and possible future developments in this field.

Characterizations of realized metal-insulator-silicon-insulator-metal waveguides and nanochannel fabrication via insulator removal

We investigate experimentally metal-insulator-silicon-insulator-metal (MISIM) waveguides that are fabricated by using fully standard CMOS technology. They are hybrid plasmonic waveguides, and they have a feature that their insulator is replaceable with functional material. We explain a fabrication process for them and discuss fabrication results based on 8-inch silicon-on-insulator wafers. We measured the propagation characteristics of the MISIM waveguides that were actually fabricated to be connected to Si photonic waveguides through symmetric and asymmetric couplers. When incident light from an optical source has transverse electric (TE) polarization and its wavelength is 1318 or 1554 nm, their propagation losses are between 0.2 and 0.3 dB/μm. Excess losses due to the symmetric couplers are around 0.5 dB, which are smaller than those due to the asymmetric couplers. Additional measurement results indicate that the MISIM waveguide supports a TE-polarized hybrid plasmonic mode. Finally, we explain a process of removing the insulator without affecting the remaining MISIM structure to fabricate ~30-nm-wide nanochannels which may be filled with functional material.
